On this day on the Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica we were surrounded by more than 2,000 Pantropical Spotted Dolphins who were playing, feeding, leaping, resting and making lots of noise! When we put the hydrophone into the water, we also heard a Humpback Whale singing further off.

A first for us! Hearing Southern Resident and transient killer whales on the hydrophones as the same time!

Traci Walter captured this recording off the Lime Kiln hydrophone on the evening of December 7, 2018. It begins with a clip of some bizarre transient killer whale vocalizations, then cuts to a few minutes later when some super loud bangs were heard! While this sounds similar to percussive behaviors like breaches and tail slaps, it's much louder, and is likely cavitation noise of the whales' flukes as they accelerate quickly while on the hunt.

Drone Dolphins!!

We were hanging out with about 500 Pantropical Spotted Dolphins who had just finished feeding and now were in deep resting behaviors. They were still hanging around our boat, so I put the hydrophone into the water to hear if they were making any noise. Generally, when resting, dolphins do not make much noise, but since there were several pods spread over the area, they continued to sonar. 

But then we heard it. The first time is at 55 seconds, but not as strong as at 2:22 seconds. They would come to the surface to breath, and then when they all went down together, they made sounds that sound exactly like a drone! I've never heard this sound like this before from our Homeboy Spotted Dolphins. I have yet to bring my drone out with them, so they didn't get that sound from me!

We were lucky to be very close this singing Humpback Whale on our Divine Dolphin tour in Drake Bay, Costa Rica. He is from our Northern Migration, the whales that come from California and Canada. It is one of our longer recordings as it was lunchtime so we stopped with the hydrophone in the water to dine with the sounds of a singing Humpback Whale. You will also hear the many Spotted Dolphins in the area.
