Following the success of the all Evolve affair we are back this month with another special show to mark our 80th outing. This month joined by legendary MC, Fokus.

Having emerged onto the scene in the early 00’s, based in Hertfordshire, Fokus has been building his reputation locally, nationally and internationally for over 20 years.  We first met on Hertfordshire’s Impact FM around 2000/1.  We were also lucky enough to acquire his talents for our Drum Project events.

From his time on Origin FM, to London events like Traffic, Renegade Hardware and the legendary Therapy Sessions, Fokus has been learning his craft well.  I was lucky enough to watch him at his best at the Sofa Sound event in Bristol in September 2019, he was absolute class.

As you can see from his discography, versatility is key.  Fokus is at home on a deep rolling beat as he is on the toughest and darkest of drums.  Right from his first release in 2011 to now his choices for collaboration are important to him.  A long standing partnership with show favourite label, Dispatch Recordings, has been a constant exemplified by last year's release of his solo release the massive ‘Frequencies EP’.  Now working with other artists including DLR, Black Barrel, Dub Head, DBR UK, Tephra & Arkoze, Bredren and Ben Soundscape.

He has said… “I think it’s important for an MC in the Drum and Bass scene to evolve with the music and avoid the clichés. I like spending time on my written rhymes, but I also try to freestyle as much as possible. It’s more spontaneous and the crowd can really vibe off it. For me, a radio show is the perfect environment to chat about some deeper rhymes, as people can hear every word and appreciate the story or message within the lyrics”.

Expect lots of new music, an extra special last one and a special 4or5From as i’ll be having a chat with the man himself. Talking about everything from his start in music, collaborations, listening to some of his releases and even a chat about Happy Hardcore.

Back To The Future #80 - The Eruption Sessions with MC Fokus

Welcome along to the least Christmassy Christmas show you’ll ever listen to. Not a sleigh, jingle or bell in sight. What there is though, is 47 tunes in just over 2 hours.

We often struggle to record together these days, so this was a real treat. What we ended up with was 2 mixes, a few of my favourites from this year to open, a 3From an LP released this month, 3 new tracks as closers and an Evolve selected Last One.

Evolve’s mix takes you from around 1998 to 2021, driven by a few tracks from the monumental ‘Hard Times’ LP released in 2008 on DNAudio interspersed with some of his faves from this last 20+ years.

Mine is a full on party mix, with tracks ranging from 1997 right up to this month.  A lively selection of classic tunes blended with what’s new and funky.

Back To The Future #83 - d mix & Evolve!

A little late but worth the wait…

Fresh out the studio with a new show!  A show jam packed with nearly 50 tracks, tracks from the last few weeks, tracks from a while back and tracks for an amazing cause.

A last minute addition to the proceedings is an 11 minute mini mix of the unbelievable Sofa King Sick IV LP! 14 Tunes from across the scene’s best, pushing the boundaries and styles again in true Sofa Sound fashion. The stand out track for me, is in the mini mix, and it’s DLR and Script’s contribution ‘A Different Style’, shout to Mikey Script!

Most importantly though is the music from the 3From and Last One.  This show is dedicated to an amazing album, Together With Ukraine.

Over 130 exclusive tracks, cross genre with an impressive list of producers and artists, all have volunteered their time and art for the greater humanitarian need.  Included with the album is some stunning artwork, moving and evocative images that from a perfect accompaniment to the music. 

All revenue generated will be donated directly to the Ukrainian Red Cross Society.  The album's minimum price is £12, though I think, if you can afford it, a bit more.

Back To The Future #87 - The Eruption Sessions with Dan XS & MC Fokus

Up with our next instalment of the Back To The Future Podcast, we return to our ‘Icon Series’.  Previous alumni have been Calibre, Break, Rufige Kru and Ivy Lab.  As you can see from that quality list, they have to be a bit special to make it… and our next graduates fulfil the brief here perfectly.

Having produced some of the scene's most cutting edge music for 14 years, including 3 amazing albums, Delay No More, Mistress and How We Live, the Brighton based duo have been present across many of the best labels around including Shogun, Critical, Exit and Metalheadz.  In 2016 they started their own razor sharp imprint, Ish Chat, home of the aforementioned ‘How We Live’ LP and my personal fave ‘Untitled Horn’. 

Wherever they’ve played and on whatever label they’ve appeared, you could always expect music with a clinical funk and an underlying soul.  Jack is now producing as Workforce and already creating a strong reputation as a solo artist, though we wanted to celebrate the duo themselves and give you our highlights from their partnership.

Included in the mix is music from across the scene, highlighting their ability to move within our complex subgenres with seeming ease.  We’ve also included some of our favourite remixes and collaborations with other scene greats including DLR, dBridge, Calibre and Break.

Welcome along to the next (somewhat belated) instalment of the Back To The Future podcast. As we round the corner for the final stretch we have another show full of new music.

Back To The Future #91 - The Eruption Sessions

As we approach the end of 2022, we thought we should do a session together for you.  I’ve recreated some of the mix I did at the Club Eruption event earlier this year and Evolve has gone in on some classics too…

We have tracks from 1998 right up to this year.  From labels as varied as Bingo Beats to  Symmetry via Eat Brain.  I managed to squeeze some shouts in for the Soundcloud crew by way of thanks and a thoroughly good time was had by all.

Wow! Here it is then - Evenin’ all!

We started this series of shows in 2011, it’s been on at least 3 radio stations, a podcast on its own and a massive amount of fun -  but it’s time for a change up!

Our new show The40 will be starting in the New Year - It’ll be much the same as Back to the Future, loads of new music mixed, but just the chance to play some new jingles (when i’ve made them…), we’ll have a couple of new features and a bit of a monthly chart for my favourite of the 40 tracks.

The Invaderz made up of Darrell, Leo and Matt.  This London trio have been at the cutting edge of the scene for years and achieve the holy grail of ‘soulful (whilst still being) techy’ music... we are big fans. 

With releases on Advanced, C.I.A / DSC14 / Metalheadz / Commercial Suicide / InnerGround / Soul:R / Liquid V to name a few.. Their quality is guaranteed.  A really decent mix taking in some new and unreleased music, some classics and a fair smattering of tracks from their new album New Found Dialect, released in November on Commercial Suicide.. They are also really excited about this year with a new 12" coming on Commercial Suicide. Welcome Back To The Future, this month with a big nod to the past.  Please join us for #49 aka the ‘All Rufige Kru Mix’.

Welcome to the ICON Series.

So what’s going on?  Well.. For this month’s podcast we’ve decided to give you a very special treat.  Following on from our ‘All Ivy Lab Mix’ last year we have looked at another one of our biggest influences!

We have been playing music from the Rufige Kru since the early 90’s right the way through to this year’s SCAR remix of Darkrider.  Those that listened will know that it helped secure the title of best label for Metalheadz in last month’s label battle (#48).  

So why?..  This music has a style within itself, a sense of tone, edge and feel that has lasted since then.  A sound that was ahead of its time in 1992 and still at the sharp end (or Razors Edge : ) of the scene in 2016.  

When putting this mix together you get that consistent quality, percussive energy and bass.. Oh.. so much bass.

So here it is our opus, tribute and love letter to Rufige Kru aka Goldie aka Clifford Joseph Price, MBE.

Continuing our series of ‘all artist’ mixes, we give you Back To The Future #52 - Calibre, The Remixes. 

This is the ICON Series.

Following the success of our Ivy Lab and Rufige Kru mixes we decided to look at another one of our inspirations.  A foundation artist with tracks in most people’s record collections, respected and admired around the world.  

Over the years we have listened to and enjoyed a fair few 'all Calibre’ mixes from other DJs, such has been his impact on the scene.  

Throughout his colossal career, he has remixed a vast and varied array of artists and labels, always putting his unique, soulful and rolling Signature (!) on them.  For this mix we've decided to focus on these remixes...  Researching his discography, we found that we had collected a huge amount of his music over the years.  After some negotiation, we managed to shortlist it to these 22.

So where did we end up? An hour and ten minutes worth of lovely music, perfect for the car or... well anywhere really.  

We hope that we have done him justice and that the mixing has matched his music and its quality, better than that… his Calibre.

Back To The Future #52 - Calibre, Part 1 'The Remixes' - ICON Series

Well here it is Merry Back to The Future Christmas.  

We decorated the studio, got full of the festive spirit and settled in for a cosy Christmas rinse out!!

We would usually do a top 10 of the year, though this year we felt like a change.  A show dominated by Break’s 10 years of Symmetry LP and DLR’s wonderful Dreamland LP.  

So there you have it… 2 extra-long mixes, Christmasly stuffed with both of these albums plus lots of brand new music covering the full scene.   Time for the traditional classic, shouts, openers and closers.  And not a sprout in sight.

For our last show of the year we are doing something different, we are going to take you through our Top 10 tracks of the year.
