Made this mix for my yearly guest appearance on KEXP's long running electronic music show, Expansions for Sharlese last December. I started out wanting to make a moody, EBMish, synthed out mix... but when all was said and done, it turned out all hot and bothered (So much so, that Sharlese almost yanked it off air in mid mix during the sexed up Jamie Principle vocals...lol). The joke was that the mix was going to give someone the wrong idea, hence the name.  Enjoy!!!

From Ben, this was my favorite set I've played so far in 2021.  I've been playing selectively at just 1-2 parties a month since things re-opened, and have been enjoying the chance to focus on each one more.

It is truly my goal to make each set unique and and the very highest-level I am capable of.  Striving for perfection we always fall short but still achieve a higher result than if we settle for mediocrity. 

Every chance to share music with dancers counts, and I feel that even more after the pandemic wiped all gigs out for a year and a half.

My favorite compliments on my set on site were one that it was varied, and the other that I don't wait around for tracks to end to mix.

Regarding variety, I used to take dancers on a more linear journey from here to there, but the last few years I've been celebrating the diversity of my music collection and have been changing styles up more.  Main thing doing this is to keep the overall energy level relatively steady through tracks of different styles with subtle bumps up and down - and I am very pleased with the results from this night. 

Musically this set starts off soft and vocal, then gradually goes back and forth between vocal and more techy and acidy tracks with energy a bit up and down towards a more energetic, rave-influenced finish ;)

Regarding not waiting for tracks to end to mix, that's usually true I don't play most tracks al the way out, with some exceptions of course.

I just find it absolutely boring both as a DJ, and as a dancer to hear 7 minutes of a track, with the last 30 seconds mixed out as a loop into the new track.  

I'm more moved by a skillful blend of two tracks that creates something more interesting and dynamic in the blend than heard separately, so I try my best to mix that way.  And let's face it, I'm there to work :)

Every once in a while over a 30 year dj career you have a special gig that goes in the hall of fame. This past summer I traveled to Calgary with my best friend Shael for us both to dj at the legendary Versions Tuesday night patio party at Broken City. This set was as close to my true musical self as I have played in a very long time. Such a perfect night with amazing people. Handing the deck off to my partner in crime Shael was exactly where I needed to be. 
This is as close to the set as I can remember. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

This past July, sometime after 4am, revelers at the annual Sunset Campout, a weekend long event embedded deep in the Sierra mountains found themselves dancing riverside. Surrounded by trees, rocks, a giant bridge over water with a small arsenal of twinkling LED and projection light bouncing off every corner Galen went on the decks. Slotting himself on the side stage at a time easily looked over, arriving almost felt like you had found the secret party at the party. Galen, one of the trio responsible for the 22 year strong Sunset Sound System was dressed in a perfectly Cali-cowboy get-up ready to take family and friends into the day as the sun approached. Keeping things locked at 127, this had to be one of the most unique sets of the weekend, not an easy thing to accomplish after sets by Idjut Boys, KZA, and Red Axes. And yet, who better to entertain notions of a west-coast psychadelic weekend rave then a man who has been working dance-floors on this side of the US for 25 years. Weaving through the bubbly swirly hip-hopish techno sounds that have become his signature, disco dub classics and dirty baseline heavy jams that set a net on dancers, this set holds so many surprises. Needless to say we have been hounding him for this recording ever since.

Sometimes when the guy who was directing traffic all weekend for an event decides to step behind the decks, they are depleted of energy and motive to move dancers. Sometimes, like in this case, the host of the weekend knows just what to do, you are in their house and no only do they want you to feel welcome, they want so show you all their nice things.

Galen honed the craft of djing by playing vinyl at renegade and warehouse parties and at his own legendary Sunset Sound System park and boat parties where he was able to explore many sides of dance music from deep acid house and techno to disco and reggae. He is known for his technical mastery of creating complex grooves on the fly through his assertive mixing techniques that are inspired by each unique dance floor. His discerning taste for music helps him carve out unique rhythm and bass sounds that are distinctly his own. His refined attention to detailed musical nuances enables him to create long blends just as easily and smoothly as quick transitions, each suited to the time and atmosphere on hand. This precise listening has also translated into his studio productions, with recent songs out now on What To Do & Culprit Records. You can find him touring Europe in the summer as well as various parties around the US, Canada, and Mexico when he is not holding it down in San Francisco.
