Massive MASSIVE respect to all the Ozmozis/Toika crew in Toronto for making this 20th anniversary event (#TWENTY) such an extremely special night for me, I still can't get over how open minded (and CRAZY) you all were dancing to rave/acid/house/techno/hardcore/trance tracks from 1989-2014 that ranged from 120-165bpm...and from 10pm all the way through until 4am!! For the final Selador Session of 2023 we’re going to do something slightly different, as we delve into the archives to bring you a mix from way back when. 30 years ago to be precise, when the Brothers In Rhythm were asked to takeover the airwaves of BBC Radio 1 for a special New Years Eve essential mix. Armed with two turntables and a mixer, a sampler and a keyboard, they set about creating a house party mix with wide ranging appeal and a splash of Balearic spirit. And here it is, from NYE 1993 into 1994, the last hour of what was a 3 hour takeover. This is Brothers in Rhythm on the Selador Sessions. Enjoy :)

Selador Sessions 242 | Brothers In Rhythm

Back in September 1993, there was a free compilation cassette tape which came along with M8 Magazine called The Scottish Dance Awards.

The tape featured tracks from the best  Scottish dance bands at the time from the likes of M.R.X, The Rhythmic State, The Shamen and so on.

The pick of the bunch was Q-Tex - Digital Bells, another master piece from that man Scott Brown, which of course samples the famous track "Tubular Bells" by Mike Oldfield, famously used in the horror movie The Exorcist.

Sadly, Digital Bells never seen the light of day, it was only ever featured on the cassette tape and the story goes along the lines of Scott Brown accidentally recorded over the original DAT tape, so was never released. 

Using the powers of SM, I reached out to see if anyone had this tape and lo & behold, one of my friends, Davie Niven, had a prime working tape, some man Davie. 

I only ever had a crappy 128k MP3, so the plan was to get a good WAV to use on my Podcast / Dj sets.

After listening to the track a good few times, after I had tweaked it a bit on Ableton, I thought I would have a go at doing my own version / remake.

So here it is, the only thing I've sampled from the tape is the bells riff, which is genius from Scott Brown, the rest I have re-created from scratch and threw in a couple of lines from the movie.

Hopefully, I've done it some justice,  enjoy.

Q-Tex - Digital Bells (Tony Oldskool Remake)

I've followed the dance music scene since the late 80s, went clubbing and raving in the 90s. I love most styles of dance music and some other genres too, but my main love is early 90s club and rave music. I have been a DJ since the early 90s, starting my trade on Vinyls of course!
90s Old School House, Acid House and Techno will always be a part of my life, and my best memories were in the Metro Nightclub in Saltcoats, Scotland (hence the many 'Metro Retro' mixes I have done) Many a fine night spent there in the early 90s
I just loved the culture of anything goes! You could dress how you pleased and nobody gave a shit! And the music was just so fresh and not really categorised, it was all just dance music to us, or House music. You'd have some dark sounding techno one minute, uplifting house the next! Just loved that scene! I also spent a good few nights in Heaven Nightclub in Glasgow in 91 and 92 (Listen to my One Night in Heaven mixes for a flavour of the tunes). It was dark and sweaty and the tunes were a little harder! Hanger 13 at Ayr Pavilion was a favourite haunt in 93 and 94. I also went to other clubs like Fubar in Stirling and of course the legendary Arches in Glasgow as well as many, many raves!
