Phonica Mix Series 85: DJ Python

A weighty and hypnotic mix from Dublin DJ and producer Sputnik One. 

"This mix is a tribute to my first gig back since February 2020: a DIY party behind the S-Bahn Station in Charlottenburg, Berlin that happened back in mid-August," he tells Crack Magazine over email.

"Prior to this, I had almost forgotten why I made and played music in the first place, and in the space of two hours everything had been reaffirmed," he adds. "The goal of this recording was to try to capture a fleeting (but special) energy through an abridged selection of tunes and moments from the night. I’m hoping it will serve as a good memento for myself and those who were there!"

PART 1: starting from 10pm

Last month I played an all-night set at Nowadays in NY, which I’ve described to many friends since as probably the best DJing experience of my life. 

As a DJ you’re constantly seeking a connection with those you play to, and sometimes it’s there, sometimes not. But I have never felt so intimately close to, and in tune with, an audience – whose faces I could barely even see – for the entire duration of a night. 

I’d slept for 2 hours, was jetlagged to the point of delirium and woefully underprepared for a 9-hour set. By the last hour and a half I had a crippling stomach cramp and was falling asleep on my feet. But by some cosmic rave miracle I had somehow slipped into a groove from the beginning and found myself tracing an arc that felt like it was drawing itself, as if all I had to do was relax and watch my own hands play the music. There were moments of intensity and euphoria and nostalgia and energetic catharsis, but throughout the entire set I felt fully empowered to meander in deep, subtle and confounding directions, somehow confident that wherever I went, the dancefloor would follow. 

The final stretch descended into a nostalgic parade of old and poignant favourites which, coming out of a recent period of personal upheaval, kinda knocked me sideways and left me frequently close to tears. I was a physical and emotional wreck by the time I finished. But it was a completely magical experience from beginning to end, which felt shared in a very genuine way by everyone in the room, and honestly I don’t care if anyone would listen to a 9-hour recording these days because I just want there to be a document of the night in its entirety out there for posterity. 

So here you go – a four part recording of the whole set, hopefully conveying at least some of the joy I felt on the night. Heartfelt thanks to Nowadays and to every person who was there. ♥️

Covering all poles between New Beat, electro, Manc punk and darkroom EBM sleaze in the first half, and fully twysting out between ghetto tech, breakbeat hardcore, footwork, and gnashing acid tekkers on the rushing 2nd part - including a killer haul of juke-juiced flips of classic ‘80s synth-pop.

Daisychain 241 - DJ Chia Pudding

Skee Mask is one of dance music's greatest crossover stories of the past decade, with new albums greeted with the attention usually reserved for an Aphex Twin or a Caribou. ("Loved seeing this on r/indieheads," said one Reddit user, on the release of the 2021 LP Pool.) It's not hard to understand why: albums like Compro, he blends well-worn dance music tropes with incredible, detailed soundscapes and spine-tingling melodies. And on his 12-inches, he brings that sensibility to the dance floor, with an approach probably best described as articulate. Even on his most ambient of tracks, everything is in its right place. Along with founders the Zenker Brothers, his music outlines everything that makes Munich outfit Ilian Tape one of the best techno labels going.

On the decks, it's kind of a different story. It might surprise you if you only know his albums, but Skee Mask is an incredible DJ, balancing his predilection for hip-hop and UK-informed sounds with laser-focused techno. He can adapt to all sorts of situations—there's an incredible recording of him DJing with four of the best grime and drum & bass MCs in the business—and on his RA Podcast he focuses on the techno side of things, with nearly two hours of pacey techno and creative mixing, with dips into acid, electro, garage and more. It's a party-starting mix from a genuine star, perfect for getting through the holiday doldrums or pre-gaming your NYE plans. Like Skee Mask's best records, it's something to enjoy in any number of settings.

Here’s the recording of my Essential Mix for BBC Radio 1, which I recorded at the start of 2020 and was broadcast in June. Feeling like I’d been given some big shoes to fill, I spent a couple of months planning a rambunctious, high-energy party mix that would also still be pretty ambitious in the range of styles and tempos it would cover, finally finishing it just as the first lockdowns were kicking in. Obviously, by the time it was eventually broadcast it felt a little out of step with the times. But listening back to it I still feel like it’s one of my better studio mixes, and with the holidays (and a vaccine) around the corner maybe its energy will even feel newly appropriate.
