Fragmentation and Union on the Search for Utopia


It is not Utopia that we strive for. It is not reaching a “destination”, as Utopia is no place. It is the search for Utopia. Upon the water, the boat floats. We are in charge of the sails, and we decide which direction we move toward. On this journey, no one said it would be easy. Choppy waters and going forward into the unknown darkness of night. Yet, the stars shine, as does the moon. And from above, there is light. And when hours pass and the sunlight breaks, it simply illuminates. Simultaneously this light casts shadows on the placid watery plane. We need both on this search ~ both night and day. Symbiosis leads to quantum leaps. On this search for no place, memories arise, and with them we move ahead in awareness. Memories fragmented and fractal, morphing and merging and changing with the tides. They gather along the way into a collection of dark and shiny pieces of us. Some we choose to keep. Some we choose to free. We honor them all, for without them we would not be here, right now. On the boat. On this search. Shaping new memories as we float. The Utopian heartbeat thumps to the rhythm of just one sound. Do you hear it? Love is calling.

Chicago's Leesh lives for the Rave. Rooted by the beautiful moments of community and camaraderie on the dancefloors and behind the decks, they created Daisychain at the very start of 2018. The weekly mix series sheds light on the sonic energy from trans and nonbinary folks and women from around the world. Inspired by new beginnings, prismatic light, daisies and the power of genuine connection ~ Daisychain sprouted to life and has only continued to grow. Leesh hosts a monthly Daisychain residency on Berlin's Refuge Worldwide radio station. You can also find them in the Bay Area from time to time as a resident of Squish.

Weaponise Your Sound w/ Leesh: View From The Centerline 290424

Turning over the leaf of the new year, Abstract without Abstraction is honored to present its first guest mix of the 2018, presented by @dj_leesh! Leesh, also known as Alicia Greco, is a writer, DJ and organizer originally hailing from Buffalo, NY, one of the newest members of Chicago's NBFC (Naughty Bad Fun Collective), and the driving force behind a number of platforms charting the pathways and affinities of underground house & techno in North America and celebrating intersectionality in dance music: @enterthesequencer & the newly launched @daisychain_podcast podcast. 

In her all-vinyl debut mix, Leesh takes us directly into the hypnagogic, ecstatic heart of the drum. We couldn't imagine a better way to enter the year of the dog- that is- the year of companionship. It is the companionship that Leesh embodies with the metaphor of the Daisychain- connecting up circuitry, identities, struggles, and livelihoods to form a symbiotic network of female-id, trans, cis women, and nonbinary folks from all backgrounds, both within and beyond our defined queer communities. Fresh behind the decks but no stranger to the dance floor, Leesh has been a dedicated speaker freaker for nearly a decade. @dj_leesh cut her teeth throwing local parties with REDUX in Buffalo, NY until heading to the Midwest. She is new to the Chicago scene and has participated as a mentee in each installation of the Chicago-based Walking & Falling DJ mentorship program geared for woman-id and nonbinary folks. Inspired by this she created Daisychain, a weekly podcast series to showcase these artists and DJs and celebrate intersectionality in dance music. As a writer and music lover Alicia fused her two passions by founding Sequencer, a website covering the underground house and techno scene.

For our 127th OFR, we welcome Leesh, who brings us a mix of what started this journey for her. It is always exciting to hear from another music lover what it was that sparked this change in their life forever. She was kind enough to share some words on the idea behind this set below.

"if you are curious about my introduction to the rave, it was mostly through dnb and uk dubstep and jungle and grime and breaks (as well as downtempo melodic stuff of course!). Then I started discovering dark and heavy techno and my world warped. those sounds are what got me freaking speakers. since I've started DJing i haven't yet dipped my toes in mixing what came before the house and techno that has guided me all of these years.

This mix was my first time trying these origin sounds out and after recording i felt a wild sense of completion, a sweet high. and it was insanely fun and natural creating it! I got to play some of the tracks that I used to lose my mind over as a young 17 year old Leesh, and some new ones that i can't get enough of."

Alicia Greco, aka Leesh, is a Chicago based DJ and head of community focused @daisychain_podcast. Daisychain showcases woman-identifying and nonbinary DJs and artists, a focus which has cultivated a global community. She also runs @enterthesequencer, a web magazine exploring underground house and techno.

When asked about music, she says, “To put it simply, music helps me understand. When I'm playing music that means something to me, hearing it out loud can bring me to tears. Everything fades away and I feel it all. It's an inexplicably beautiful experience.” This mix is earnest, expressing feelings and influences that swing from reflective melodies, to high energy house, to acid and back. Leesh will take you through tender moments punctuated by elation.

No stranger to the dance floor and the Rave Scout Movement, Leesh was one of our first initiated scouts to join our troops three years ago on the main-stage dancefloor of Sustain-Release. Born in Upstate New York, Leesh has been a speaker freak for over 10 years. In 2017, she moved to Chicago to explore her passion further after participating in the 'Walking & Falling DJ Mentorship Program' concentrated on women-identifying & non-binary artists. Inspired by this, Leesh founded multiple platforms; one of which, Daisychain Podcast, is focused on foregrounding women-identifying & non-binary talents to celebrate intersectionality in dance music. This rave scout channels her wholesome energy to communicate deep emotions through the atmosphere of her sound; both the dark and the light.

This weeks mix is a dream-come-true. Friends of the show will more than likely be all too familiar with the pioneering mix series, Daisychain. It’s founder, Leesh, has put together a profoundly personal set befitting of the place we find ourselves in.

The mix sets out to celebrate being true to yourself, while simultaneously expressing the love shared between friends. Nailing it on the head, each track selection is intimately personal, serving as a placeholder for an isolated experience or a shared memory between her compatriot. The intimacy Leesh aimed to contextualize is palpable - you’re getting a firsthand narration of moments and places that are not your own. The unexpected outcome of this portrayal is the very raw and real experiences that belong to us. Our friends. Our families. Our communities. By telling her own story, we get a chance to fondly remember our own.

Leesh, aka Alicia Greco, a longtime purveyor of emotional dance music, has gig’ed around at some of our favourite parties in the midwest including Pittsburgh's @hot-mass and Detroit’s Movement Weekend Industry Brunch. She’s also put out mixes on some of our favourite platforms; @walkingandfalling, @acidcamp, and @ravescout Cookies to name a few. We are super honoured to host her today and the mix she’s crafted for us stays true to the emotional brand!

Leesh is not only a dj but also works tirelessly behind the scenes running the enormous @daisychain_podcast Platform. In her words, “Daisychain is a movement to showcase power, beauty, and strength of DJs and artists” featuring trans, gender nonconforming people and women in particular. Daisychain is a force in our greater community, hosting everyone from octo octa to past OE guests Rachel Noon, Darwin, and Davis Galvin, to even some OE residents themselves!
