“Produced by DJ Premier.”  From Gang Starr, The Notorious B.I.G., Nas, Kanye West, Jay-Z, Dr. Dre, Common, Mos Def, Snoop Dogg, Cee-Lo Green, Mac Miller, Joey Bada$$, Ludacris, The Game & his most recent vehicle; PRhyme; over the course of twenty-five trendsetting years, those four words have become synonymous with the cornerstone of hip-hop’s sound.

However, “Preemo” as he’s affectionately known has always been a conduit for artists of all genres to attach their lyrics to his complex rhythm of the streets--- D’Angelo, Macy Gray, Janet Jackson, Maroon 5, Miguel, Neneh Cherry, Lion Babe, Yuna, Anderson .Paak, & Christina Aguilera (which his work won a Grammy for) to name just a few.  Throughout it all; Grammy’s, Platinum and Gold plaques, undeniable legendary status, Premier has orchestrated a unique sound that remains a hallmark of positive and advanced music.

While Premier has previously collaborated with iconic female artists, in none of the aforementioned examples has the iconic producer/DJ entirely produced one of their projects. With a resume like Premier’s, it takes a lot to get his attention—and perhaps more importantly his respect. 

Enter Torii Wolf, a singer-songwriter and musician from Wantagh, New York who traded coasts–bouncing around West Coast cities and enhanced herself artistically; shunning categories, confinement, and convention.  Torii also just happens to be the first female artist to have her entire project (the forthcoming album entitled Flow Riiot) produced by Preemo.  “Torii has such a weird, wicked style,” Premier offers. “It’s just very left field—reminiscent of a Bjork or something like that. She is so unique and versatile; she writes, sings and is an accomplished guitarist and drummer.  But image-wise, there is no comparison. Subject-wise, Torii is in a whole different place.”

The versatility Premier hints at is evident on Torii Wolf’s first single, the aptly-titled, “1st,” a war-torn and wistful ode to unrequited love and commitment that ultimately leaves more questions than answers, as she ponders “what does it take to keep you from running away.”  Digging into his past catalog, Premier reshuffles the deck on a Rakka Iriscience vocal sample from his “Good As Gone” production from Dilated Peoples Directors Of Photography album to create another spellbinding scratch-chorus “I’ve seen the last come first, I’ve seen the first last.” 

Premiered exclusively by Pitchfork, “1st” offers just a glimpse at the musical symmetry and bond Torii developed with Premier creating Flow Riiot and it happened so organically that Torii feels as if something greater was at play, as if the stars aligned to make this musical marriage happen “The great thing about Premier is he’s a tailor and he has this rare and innate ability to cater his sound around who he is working with to accentuate an artist’s strengths; but you can always still tell its Premier.”  

DJ Premier’s excitement is hard to earn and this woman with a massive voice commanded the spotlight. With a Hip-Hop king who has a habit of contributing and producing historic projects behind the boards, Torii Wolf’ debut, Flow Riiot, brings a full clip of moods, range, and vast musical talent. Thanks to her sultry voice, range and vast musical talent (let us not forget DJ Premier’s production) Torii Wolf has enjoyed a precipitous rise over the last four months.  Though she has yet to release her debut album, Flow Riiot, (which is a collaborative project with DJ Premier), Torii has already premiered music with Pitchfork, Hotnewhiphop, Mass Appeal, Vibe & Okayplayer, been tapped for Vevo’s “dscvr” series (past alumni include Tove Lo, Sam Smith, Hozier, DNCE, Alessia Cara) and she was recently highlighted by Apple Music. 

Today, via an exclusive Complex Premiere, Torii Wolf returns with “Body,” a new, non-LP cut which has her collaborating with araabMUZIK (who also produced the entirety of Joe Budden’s forthcoming Rage & The Machine album).  “Working with Torii was incredible” araabMuzik commented to Complex.  “Two very unique styles (dope vocals and a dope track) merging to create a masterpiece. It has always felt so sexy to me” Torii relayed to Complex.  “That heat, the heat caused by friction and deep connection.  I wrote this song about how much I need to torrentially fall with the rain.”

On The Eve Of The Anniversary For The Iconic Artists Birth & Death, Raekwon Breaks Down His Heartfelt Tribute To Marvin Gaye

“I don't make records for pleasure. I did when I was a younger artist, but I don't today. I record so that I can feed people what they need, what they feel. Hopefully, I record so that I can help someone overcome a bad time.” (Marvin Gaye, NME Interview Circa 1982)

One of the standout tracks from Raekwon’s recently released seventh solo-masterpiece, The Wild, is undoubtedly his heartfelt tribute to Marvin Gaye, simply entitled “Marvin” which features Cee-Lo.

With “Marvin,” Raekwon authors his own audio autobiography of the fellow iconic artist, detailing his upbringing, his artistic legacy, his turbulent personal life and his tragic death (at the hands of his own father).  As the anniversary of Marvin Gaye’s birth (April 2nd) and death (April 1st) both draw near, Raekwon further honors Marvin Gaye’s life and his dedication to him by delving into the creative process of the track and where the inspiration stemmed from.

“Once I heard the beat, his name kept coming to me (“Marvin” exactly like Cee-Lo’s hook).  The beat reminded me of him and it transported me back to that time.  It was like his life flashed before me and the words just began spilling out organically” Raekwon stated.  “Marvin’s music transcended genres and it can speak to anyone, but it especially speaks to those of us who come from the inner-city; poverty, oppression, the good and the bad.  Living in the inner-city, his music helps us reflect.  He was real and you could hear it in his voice and in his music.  That is where we have parallels, he spoke to a generation and so do I and Wu-Tang.  We share creativity and we speak on what we want people to hear; and not focus on trends.  Marvin saw the climate change and what he saw affected him.  He stood up for what he believed in (issues we are still dealing with today) and created conversation and awareness and he had a vision; I resemble those same traits.   I wish I could sit down with him and play him this tribute and just smoke a splif and vibe.”

Flow Riiot’s anthemic lead-single “Free” f/ Macklemore & DJ Premier tackles the battle we face every day to be our authentic selves and a reminder that our freedom comes from within and how we hold the key to how “Free” we really are. 

“When we had our first meeting to compile which songs were going to make the album, King Of Chill plays this track that I hadn’t heard” DJ Premier stated to Complex.  “It was only a beat and Torii was singing a line from The Police’s “Voices  Inside My Head.”  I asked both of them; why have I never heard this?  It needed lyrics, but we removed the hook because I wanted to scratch on it. Torii came back to the studio, wrote and recorded her vocals and she decided to call it “Free.”  I was instantly hooked on this being one of the single releases from the album.” 

The tracks topic matter holds very special meaning to Torii as well, as she expressed to Complex.  “Free” is a special tune.  It’s very relatable.  True freedom comes from within; it’s the battle we face each day with our own identity. Having the confidence to be comfortable in our skin and with who we are; and being our true authentic selves. I find the content of someone else’s mind most attractive.  Feeling free in my gender fluidity and the way I connect with other humans is vital to my being.  To feel safe in outwardly expressing what it is that ignites a spark in me can be very challenging in the society we live in. However, it’s only harder when I try and resist it. It feels very important for me to lead by example in sharing with others how we are in control of our own destiny.  To be in touch with ourselves in knowing what we want, who we are and what feels good is such a gift.  It radiates and it is very liberating.  Allowing your spirit to shine can be contagious and that freedom from within is the light that we all need. I’d also like to mention how without even getting to in-depth with him conceptually, Macklemore’s verse fell so in line with the feel so organically.  Ben’s words are so dope and I feel so grateful to hold space for them on this record. “my spar partner is the devil, but I train with God” and “as long as I’m me, then you know that I’m free”; are such incredible lines that truly resonate.”

Produced by Mike Zombie (of Drake’s “Started From The Bottom”& DJ Khaled’s “They Don’t Love You No More” featuring Jay-Z, French Montana, Meek Mill & Rick Ross fame), “Pain Killer” is the audio equivalent of an opioid, replete with Torii’s pleas to euthanize her anguish, yet so ultimately stimulating it creates a high you can’t stop craving.  

“Pain Killer” is a very intense record for me emotionally” Torii emphasized to Highsnobiety.  “I love the track that Mike Zombie created; his productions are dark and deep and that really resonates with me.  I want people to connect with this song on a level of compassion and understanding.  Falling in and out of love.  The strong similarities to the high you get from being intimate with another person.  Co-dependency. Vulnerability.  There is space and emotion in this record.  I did it in one take, so my raw emotion is immortalized here.” 

“Pain Killer” is definitely the most left field production people will have heard from me so far” Mike Zombie stated to Highsnobiety.  I sampled "Nathan King- Gone Away" a musician that I really like and it really gave the production that feel to that airy, open vibe. When I heard what Torii had done to the record I was in awe. Not to be cliché, but she really embodies pain in her voice alone. When I spoke to Premier I was one honored to even work with him, but more honored that he respected the craft enough to let me mix the record. Not too many producers get to mix they're records nowadays and it was my first time ever doing it and getting the opportunity to do it with him for the first time is a true accomplishment.”
