DJ Alex Voices Balearic Style Mix for White Board Journal Magazine Oct 2013

On a brief return to London, I was going through my humongous box of classic live mixes and came across this one Robert Owens live @ The Choice 1990. Robert needs no introduction...lead vocalist on the legendary 'Another Side' Lp from Mr Fingers and vocalist on the classic 'Tears' by Frankie Knuckles amongst many many other House classics we know. Here this live mix is from The Choice which was in the Lower East Side...LES a.k.a Alphabet City. The Choice was run by Joey Llanos who was head of security at Paradise Garage and Richard Vasquez. It was also where David Mancuso R.I.P lived and where he hosted his Loft parties. The venue was not in great shape during this time and David also hired it out to Joey and Richard. It did have a great history and Klipsch speakers and incredible Dancers and great array of DJ's play there such as Frankie Knuckles, Larry Levan, Victor Rosado, Basil, DJ Disciple, Bobby Konders and many more...enjoy :).

DJ/Producer/Remixer Victor Rosado is a very good old friend of mine, originally from New York, Victor has been actively DJ'ing since the 80's, having played at the Loft for David Mancuso and in the closing months of the Paradise Garage, asked to play by Larry Levan. Victor is someone I learnt an immense amount from in terms of music, and the importance of presentation. He was one if not the opening DJ at Club Yellow in Japan and one of the first opening DJ's at Ministry Of Sound in 1991 and played there during the first few very important years. Also he played at Moist (DJ Harvey and Heidi's) night at The Gardening Club in Covent Garden London. In the early 2000's we brought Victor over to london again to do various parties including Voices and other nights. Victor was also alongside Lenny Fontana part of the 'Tribute To Paradise' European tour, which myself and Johnny Hiller organised. Which took in clubs such as Fabric and more. This is a live mix converted from a DAT tape.. Victor was kind enough to lend to me many moons ago, while staying with him in The Bronx NYC. Enjoy this fine mix from the glory days of MOS.

Victor Rosado Live @ MOS 90'S Part 1 of 3

This is a very special one. A rare live mix from one of the true Italo legends 'Mr Salvatore Cusato a.k.a Casco (Cybernetic Love), BWH and more. Sadly, Salvatore is no longer with us, he passed away in 2010, shortly after what we believe was his last DJ appearance with us in London on NYE 2009/10. He played an incredible set of Italo music alongside East End party crew 'Pearl Flash' who were less than half his age. Salvatore was so ecstatic that he was playing again, to a younger dancefloor who knew all his music, and had an incredible time. Looking back that room that Pearl Flash hosted as part of our line up was the best in terms of atmosphere. Respect to Pearl Flash...Ben, Tom and Mario (R.I.P) all their crew. i think we recorded the set back then but have to search that out. This is gold though..a very short, rare live mix from Salvatore in Italy 1983. R.I.P Salvatore...thank you for that incredible set on NYE, that night and your music that lives on..Don't Stop :).

Back upstairs in the loft and another one from tape archive...and a fierce one reared it's head again from DJ/Artist/Producer that really left some stunning house music in his legacy and was a bad boy DJ as well as producer even back then...Mr Bobby Konders. Bobby laced us with now classic tracks like his House Rhythms Ep...feat Nervous Acid and the deep house classic The Poem. Also his work on Massive B are also classics in the deep house sound. Bobby really delivered the sound of Deep House as I and many remember going out dancing and buying house music from 89-91-92 would remember. Very dreamy moody tracks that sway perfectly in the 5-7am zone at that ideal/dream party I have in my head...I know I'm not alone in those thoughts...Here we hear Bobby in the mix for his show back on WBLS New York in 1989, featuring many jams from back then and even earlier..some great mixes and moods that Bobby creates in the mix. Bobby as far as I know is pretty much a pure Reggae man now...something that was always apparent in his earlier house music and DJ mixing, Bobby played some choice New York parties back then inc House Nation and Wild Pitch and even visited the Ministry Of Sound in it's first year. This one has some jams for sure..Bobby showing his blends in this varied genre and killer show.

Found this in the archives, really great interview with DJ/Remixer Victor Rosado when he was about to play in Ireland back in 2011. Very in depth discussion on The Loft, David Mancuso R.I.P and Larry Levan Paradise Garage. Victor paints a true visual picture of what the PG and loft were like and how both David and Larry played music. Essential listening to someone who played at The Loft and Closing months of the Garage with Larry and their friendship that ensued.

Last live broadcast show for Cashmere Radio. i have had an incredible time, and very lucky to have been given a monthly live show by the loving Cashmere crew of Giacomo, Matteo and Lukas and many more, through various studios and locations, Cashmere are some of the most professional stations that offer so many DJs a platform to express. No easy feat by any means...constantly on the effort and search to do better and offer a welcoming community radio station and much more in Berlin. Thankyou to all my friends and people i reached out to for their music for the show...is incredibly important to support new music and talent we believe in as DJs and also get on the mic and say whats what :). Lastly but not least, many thanks to the guest DJs that i invited to cover my show...

Out Of The Darkness Comes...

Quite possibly one of my all time favourite Tony Humphries tapes as he mixes live for Kiss 98.7 in New York back in 91 or so...Tony is rockin tracks like Nature Boy's Ruff Disco, Mood 2 Swing - 2 copies :), Ron Trent as well as his own remix for The Sugarcubes - Leash Called Love amongst many other great House records of that time. One word that springs to mind when hearing and Tony - a real workin DJ in the mix is 'Slammin'

Carrying on the 90's House mixes from the archives...this one from the 'Giving It Up' slot on London's Kiss 100FM...this slot was given to special guest DJ's who were not part of the regular kiss roster of DJ's...New York's Kenny Carpenter took over this show...think he may of done a few for the station as well as many shows he did back in New York which i have recordings of...Kenny is a very classic, smooth and soulful DJ...he's really been there since the beginning in some form or other. Dancer, Working the Lights, DJ, Producer...i heard him at Ministry Of Sound back then and he was great...what hazy memories I have...great DJ :)

DJ Disciple live on WNYE 91.5 FM back in 1989...DJ Disciple came over to the U.K in the 90's where i first heard him live. Solid house DJ and this mix in his seemingly early days hears him play some killer house jams from the year. The flyer was a party he played at the Choice hosted by Joey Llanos & Richard Vasquez which was also played to the likes of Larry Levan, Frankie Knuckles, Basil, Victor Rosado and many more...

DJ Disciple WNYE 91.5 FM 10/10/89

One more from the vaults...not the best recording..I have a good few of Kenny Carpenter including some nice live ones from Japan that are more cleaner. This however is sweet, because it's Kenny how I remember hearing him...I only heard at Ministry of Sound back then and he was like many of the classic New York DJ's the real deal. A few things that spring to mind on hearing those guys back then is programming and presentation. Hot records or up and coming things they knew were hot and believed in. They would present it by playing for example..dub version followed by Instrumental and then the all important vocal mix. As the american jocks were used to playing long sets back home they were also granted extended sets at clubs like Ministry of Sound so they would play those records up to 3 times during their set...i remember a good few times hearing various DJ's like Kenny Carpenter, David Morales and Tony Humphries do this...you'd leave wanting that particular record only to pop into Black Market or Red Records..etc to be greeted by a smile and a..'yeah that's probably not gonna be out for a while' reply...

Anyways back to this mix...because it's Kenny and also reminded that 1992 was another great year for house music, many now certified classics in this radio show for WBLS...and a memorable one for me :)...enjoy !.

Merlin Bobb as far as I know was a resident DJ at the Shelter and was what many friends told me was always great to hear there. Often referred to as a DJ's DJ...:). Many spoke very highly of him. I heard him first on one of the first New York mix tapes mix tapes given to me. Merlin Bobb WBLS Dance Party.

Big Tony is coming to play Panorama bar this Sunday afternoon...this is a far cry from the the music of now...no bad thing..just an observation :). This is how i remember Tony. A living legend in his own right and largely responsible for building, nurturing and supporting New Jersey house music as well as being holding down DJ residencies at Club Zanzibar in New Jersey in the 80's and Ministry Of Sound in London. Dial tuning clears after 7mins in or so....some favourites on here from Jovonn and Kerri Chandler too...enjoy :)

APT was a two floor barclub in the old meatpacking district in New York...it was a lovely venue, which catered and supported local DJ's such as Darshan Jesrani, Dennis Kane, Eric Duncan and many more. Midweek through til the end of the week if i remember correctly. 

I met Darshan and Morgan at their first ever live Metro Area performance in London in early 2000/1 at Plastic People R.I.P. They set up in the middle of the floor..with full set up. And with the help my old friend Acyde and Lady Miss Kier..we also managed to find a piece of equipment that they essentially needed for nights show..after some phone calls and taxi's..the performance was saved and they proceeded to turn it out. Definitely one of my most memorable lives shows I witnessed from a dance act !.

A close friendship between us ensued since that live show and he was kind enough to reach out and invite me to play with him on his regular Thursday night at APT...Darshan also played with us at Voices @ Plastic People and Oze's Gallery space in London Bridge. 

So with great pleasure it's nice to upload part 1 of this live session from myself and Darshan...enjoy :).

One big thing I missed after my move from London to Berlin was my radio show...I had hosted a 3 hour weekly online show for around 6-7 years on www.deepfrequency.com . After some time in Berlin I was introduced to some great new friends Charlie and Lena from System Out and also have their show on Cashmere. A trip soon followed to respected online radio station Cashmere Radio and I now how host the 2nd Saturday night from 10.30pm-Midnight. You can expect Ambient through Dub, deep House, Disco and more that can sometimes play a part in my DJ/Club sets as well as things that sounds nice on the radio. Over time there may be specialist focused shows of a specific genre too. There's enough music to cover and share. This is September's show...left the mic on, which was a happy mistake and anyways caught the live vibe in the studio. Great to be back broadcasting and part of the Cashmere Radio schedule too...p.s over time will be inviting friends, guest DJ's producers to come in while they are in the city for their prospective gigs and shows..keep it https://cashmereradio.com/
