Basilisk is a veteran DJ, label owner, and music publisher from Canada now residing in Taiwan. Widely known for his tireless efforts to champion netlabel content through the Ektoplazm distribution portal, he also dedicates himself to mastery of the mixing arts. Here he turns his attention to the vast catalogue of gleaming gems released by Digital Diamonds, a pioneering label he has proudly supported since its inception in 2006. DJ Basilisk explores many shades of deep house, melodic and dub techno, and leftfield dance music in this meticulously-curated guest mix for the Taipei-based Evaporate crew. Although rooted in the psytrance scene, Basilisk is a true sonic chameleon, traversing an immense range of styles and approaches in pursuit of gourmet electronic sounds. Here he applies his signature smooth and harmonic mixing style to subterranean house and techno, navigating the moody depths of the genre with confidence and aplomb. Expect to hear warm grooves, sultry vocals, hints of jazz, and a dash of "Rominimal" in the opening half of the mix, after which Detroit techno drive and brawny bass-heavy beats deliver a glimmering climax. A serene and hypnotic comedown follows, delicately stripping back the layers until only raw analog sounds and tape hiss remain. The results are spellbinding and sublime, inviting further listening over the coming years.

BIO
Basilisk is the founder of the Ektoplazm label group and distribution portal, co-founder of psychedelic techno label Techgnosis Records, and a veteran DJ with broad musical interests and an uncompromising commitment to quality. More than two decades of experience inform his practice, which emphasizes harmonic mixing theory and open-minded yet meticulous curation. He is currently based in Taipei, Taiwan.

CONCEPT
My intention with this guest mix for Psybient.org is two-fold: to expand the horizons of what we consider "psychedelic downtempo" by exploring a wide range of adjacent and compatible styles of electronic music; and to demonstrate advanced mixing techniques in a chill out set, where many DJs just make brief transitions between tracks.

This mix contains multitudes: ambient and modular dreamscapes, bucolic IDM and futuristic electro breaks, quirky nu-disco workouts, deep and organic house and trance, bubbling acid experiments, shimmering slabs of dub techno, and more than a few references to the origins of psychedelic trance culture on the beaches of South and Southeast Asia. A careful selection of harmonically compatible source material allows for long, layered transitions, sometimes with three or four tracks playing simultaneously. Ideally this creates a sort of auditory illusion where tracks meld together and time collapses, making it effortless to lose yourself in this musical microcosm. Finally, on an emotional level, this mix is often more hopeful and perhaps even inspirational, though it is not without melancholy and sadness at times, a reflection of the global zeitgeist.
