Any artist is welcome to send us a track via freshonthenet.co.uk anytime between Monday lunchtime and Wednesday evening (or when we receive 200 submissions, whichever is sooner) - and all our moderators, including Tom Robinson, will listen to every track. This is our full inbox from the week beginning Mon 24th April 2023: from Friday afternoon you'll be able to hear our shortlist and pick your favourites on this week's Listening Post which will appear at freshonthenet.co.uk/batch485

If a track you submitted does not appear in this list, it’s probably because another of your tracks appeared in our Fresh Faves or on the BBC Music Introducing Mixtape during the last three months — we ask that artists featured on either wait three months before resubmitting to give others a chance. 

We also don’t accept short previews or SoundCloud Go tracks that can only be heard as 30 second previews, and tracks made private after submission, which cannot be included in playlists. You will be able to resubmit the track in future. Tracks (and remixes of tracks) that have been previously submitted, and tracks from banned artists will also be removed.

For those who are still hosting winter in their minds, for those who get angry at that bright sun outside, for those who are not feeling alive yet, for the spring zombies – a healing love is brought by the cult.

One More Problem dives into the depths of self-esteem and our seeming inabilities in this day and age to respect ourselves. This track explores the journey of allowing yourself to like who you are, and attempts to dispel the negative thoughts we tell ourselves in order to avoid facing and overcoming the challenges we most need to. It explores topics such as Anxiety, Confidence and our inner demons. This song has already gained traction on Spotify (through playlists and algorithmic placements), with our debut music video being released this weekend (30th April)! We were also lucky enough to have this song produced by Scott Goodrich (Story So Far).

It’s Perfectly Clear Right Now is the lead single from Alt-Mobeat, the new album by London-based producer DJ Counselling. Conceived in a Berlin art gallery, the track captures the laid back hip hop vibe of albums that inspired Ash during the 90s — yet with a darker edginess,  low synth bass, heavy drums and a cinematic atmosphere. Drenched in organic textures and layered beats, this song elegantly deviates from Ash’s more dancefloor oriented tracks and underscores his esteem as a musician.

Second single from DJ Counselling’s new album Alt-Mobeat, “Your Light Cannot Be Extinguished” is a homage to his late friend Gavin — a New Zealander whose zeal for South London helped locals rekindle their love for it. The track is rich with layered bugle samples that punctuate the mark left by a cherished character in the area’s vibrant music scene. Far from melancholic, this is a moving, almost joyous, tribute to Gavin’s powerful, unfading energy that lives on in the music and art of London.

Every Day the Sun Comes Up

South London’s DJ Counselling, aka Ash Arnold, is known for creating hand-played rhythms with an original approach to groove. Being part of the electronic dance scene for over 20 years, Ash has worn many hats: producer, remixer, DJ, record label owner, band leader and, first and foremost, drummer. First surfacing as DJ Counselling with his debut single “Pollard’s Thrill” in 2018, Ash uses real instruments and live recording techniques with analogue synthesisers to create deep, atmospheric music that is as uplifting as it is emotive.

Whether in his home studio in London or mobile studio in Berlin, Ash explains how he knows he’s onto something special “when it doesn’t feel like the music is coming from me anymore. For a moment, I get so lost in what I’m creating that I hear it as though someone else is making it.” The DJ Counselling project gathered momentum in 2020 with lauded releases “Every Day the Sun Comes Up”, “Cool Air” and “Wide Awake in an Open Space”, which drew fans like Tom Ravenscroft and Jungle.

With DJ Counselling, Ash doesn’t intend to deliver big club hits but rather creates music that reflects his mood or location at the time of writing. Nonetheless, his music is hugely popular on the dancefloor; being played by the likes of Richie Hawtin and Bonobo. Esteemed for his eclecticism and versatility, Ash brings the club to the concert hall, and vice versa, with his ever-evolving live performances. Expect percussion instruments, classical sensibilities, and complex analogue synths being given equal attention on stage.

DJ Counselling’s new album, Alt-Mobeat, underscores Ash’s symphonic craftsmanship and esteem as a musician. It is difficult to place DJ Counselling into a specific genre. From tracks like “Cool Air”, one of Spotify’s Best Electronic Songs of 2021, to his latest works, Ash has never tried to fit himself into a box. Instead, he applies an emotional connection to everything he creates, with a strong groove always being the main focus.
