Q. How would you describe yourself?

Brandon: Light hearted, reserved and a deep thinker. 

Craig: Crazy, sexy, cool. 

Q. How long have you been a part of the NY music scene?

B: I’ve been a part of the scene since I was a teenager, well before I was legally allowed to be in a night club. I’m still discovering so much about our music scene; we have such a rich history. 

C: We’re both born and raised here so it’s like we’ve always been part of this scene. In and out of record shops pre-teenage years and sneaking into the clubs by 16/17. 

B: I also feel so fortunate for the community here in NYC. There really aren’t any other states in the U.S. that have a scene as vibrant and thriving as ours!

Q. Tell us a little bit about this mix.

B: We took a spontaneous approach when we recorded the mix. Craig would play a record,  and I would feed off of that energy when deciding what to play next. It’s similar to how we play live. Nothings’ rehearsed and the music selection is unconstrained. 

C: The mix is a good example of some of the sounds you may hear at the party we throw. Hour long sets can be tricky to encapsulate the entire mood in such a short time, but we try our best to let the mix sonically speak for itself.

Nick V @nickv was born in Manchester but for the last three decades has been an integral part of the scene in Paris. His La Mona events, which he talks about elsewhere in this issue, are a dance culture party running since 2008 and "exploring the relationship between dance and electronic music," which "often sees dance enthusiasts sharing the floor with house music heads. La Mona has "long celebrated the LGBTQ scene, catering for the Parisian community and encouraging alternative dances such as Vogueing, Waacking and many more which were birthed out of the early disco and house scene in the US."

As a DJ, record collector, audiophile and crate digger, Nick V's sound traverses through disco, deep techno, broken beat, boogie and dancefloor jazz while keeping house music at the core of everything. This cover mix for 5 Mag Issue 214 is the perfect encapsulation of that.

It’s fair to say that Kai Alce is an underrated artist. Not only does he turn out a consistent stream of tunes on top labels, but he also oversees NDATL Muzik, one of the most fawned over deep house labels out there. He has actually been active since 2002, and his heartfelt brand of house has always embodied elements of New York, Detroit and Chicago, as well as his Atalanta homeland. It sounds unmistakably alive and irresistibly soulful and has come on labels like FXHE, Mahogani Music and Finale Sessions. As a lynchpin of the Atlanta scene, he and his peers are only just starting to get some of the wider recognition they deserve. 

The mix he offers us here showcases his impeccable taste and takes in jazzy house styles, loose party jams and vocal groovers that are deliciously deep. Romantic and richly coloured, it’s a set for lovers of laidback grooves and proper musicality. Given the time of year, the whole thing seems to glow like Christmas lights on a festive winter night, so stick it on, warm up some mulled wine and get on down.

Sharing with the audience what I think are the greatest records of the moment or what I think are timeless and personal classics is something that has motivated me through the years. I see my job as being a big filter: As a vinyl junkie, I am in the record stores chasing jams almost everyday. And I am also following movements in what I hear such as when techno was revolutionary or when the NY deep house sound really expanded, that’s what I would showcase. Now that a lot of techno and house roots are being revived and also reinvented, I can as always, enjoy playing a lot of new amazing records and some classics!

Twenty years in, from house to techno and everything in between, DJ Deep has immersed himself in the ebb and flows of music, be it NY, Chicago, Detroit or today’s current pulsating waves. He captures the magic of each as a leading figure of the Parisian scene and label owner, connecting the dots both forward and back with his own personal and multidimensional touch.

DJ Deep first got his break when he was invited by Laurent Garnier to DJ at parties such as Oz and Zoo at club Palace, or Boy, in his hometown Paris. Followed by regular appearances at the influential Rex Club, radio shows ‘A Deep Groove’ on then pirate station Radio FG, and later Radio Nova, plus a string of mix CDs on Distance and Respect is Burning, DJ Deep began touring worldwide, spreading his house and techno obsession to audiences craving his deep crates of musical truth.

In 2003, DJ Deep launched his labels Deeply Rooted (formerly Deeply Rooted House) and House Music Records, shining a spotlight on true-to-its roots house and techno records and harder to find gems from the likes of Kerri Chandler, L.B. Bad, Terence Fixmer, Mike Dehnert and Roman Poncet. The dream catalogue sealed his music curatorship with timeless records such as Kerri Chandler’s now classic “Back to the Raw”, Ben Klock’s remix of “Pong” by Kerri Chandler and Francois X’s “Code Red” remixed by Marcel Dettmann.

A reformat in 2015 and DJ Deep’s latest evolution in expression sees him join forces with Roman Poncet as Sergie Rezza, an open-minded experimentation with a standout album on Desire Records and performances including Berlin Atonal. Their straight-up techno live project, Adventice, saw a trio of releases on the reputable Tresor with performances at Weather Festival (Paris), Reperkusound Festival (Lyon) and many more to come. Fang is the duo’s house-leaning alias, which marked Deeply Rooted’s momentous 50th release in 2015. Unabatedly, DJ Deep’s solo adventure also continues with his own deep “cuts” out on his label or under his Rébeval raw house alias, on the cult NYC L.I.E.S Records.
