One That Shows the Way

Hello, bass family. It's good to be with you in this space again, after so long. So much has happened, for all of us. I'm not sure whether this mix will be a one off thing, or whether i'll do it again. But i felt the time was right to share some of the musical magic that has been helping me stay just about sane.

Funds will be gifted to Black Minds Matter UK, an organisation connecting Black people with free mental health support provided by Black therapists. I’ve chosen this organisation because so much of the music i love and that i’m sharing with you now descends from the music of Black people - music that can at least partly be understood as a form of creative response to the social, cultural, intergenerational and personal traumas of white supremacy. 

So i invite you to flow into this music that brings us back into our bodies, that opens up space in our minds, that shrinks the distance between us, expands our sense of what’s possible, and reminds us what love, connection and belonging feel like. I invite you to honour the history of this music and the memory of its creative pioneers, by offering support to the people still living with the same injustices today.

I know times are tough for so many of you - if you can't afford to give anything, this mix goes out particularly to you. But if you can afford even just a couple of pounds or dollars, it makes a difference and is deeply appreciated.

Returning to Mindspring Music after contributing 2 joint tracks with Earth Sine, on 2018 and with Neo 0n 2021, Earth Connect brings forth a fun, psychedelic adventure, in the form of the Alternate Land EP. Deep beneath the layers of uplifting melodies and playful sonic textures, a simplistic, yet effective, presentation of funky basslines, and driving beats. These elements set the stage for a funky-journey into multifaceted, laid back, and easy-going, downtempo tunes. Subtle psychedelic textures are carried along by evenly-paced movement that are consistent throughout the entirety of the EP. Combining modern production techniques, with some of the classic electronica instrumentation, and synth-work, Alternate Land finds itself sitting nicely between feeling fresh, new, and slightly nostalgic.

Hailing from Israel, Itzik Lanciano is proud to take us on this journey through four tracks of uniquely crafted adventures. Stepping across the veil into his alternate land, one will surely encounter plenty of: bouncy basslines, fun melodies, and toe-tapping beats - designed to uplift and inspire. Just Be has been riding a wave of success in the past year and further cements this new incarnation with next installment for the mighty Crosstown Rebels. The massive ‘Don’t Make Me Wait For You’, featuring Jesse Monroe is a wonky slice of pent up tension and swelling moods, reminiscent of proto garage house classics with a touch of modern slinkiness. As the diva vocal narrative builds with a dirty bassline groove, hypnotic echoes of “Don’t Make Me Wait For You” propel the track higher to truly captivate the dancefloor. The more tangled ‘5am remix’ comes courtesy of Rebel wunderkind Subb-an.

Launching his career as Matthew B in the midst of the UK acid house explosion, Just Be’s identity and sound has undertaken many a metamorphosis, from Bushwacka!, The End Soundsystem, to Layo and Bushwacka! and now embarking on the ambitious solo project JUST BE.

An exciting 2012 saw releases for Just Be on Get Physical, Maison D’etre, Plus 8, and Intec Digital plus gigs at some of the best clubs and festivals on the circuit. In total Just Be’s output under various guises has been phenomenal with six artist albums and a seventh due this year. The super producer has also delivered over 120 remixes, and 160 tracks for labels such as XL Recordings, End Recordings and his own labels Olmeto, Plank and Oblong. Just Be is a true dance music icon.

Subb-an has recently been on tour with the Rebels celebrating 10 years of the historic label. With an album forthcomngg on Crosstown and huge releases on labels such as Visionquest, Spectral Sound and his own One Records. His hectic touring schedule is testament to the steep rise of this underground star and seminal gigs are lined up this year at the likes of Panorama Bar and DC10.
