There is a lovely quote about art and how it is the way we choose to decorate space, with that considered then naturally music is how we can decorate time...This conjures up thoughts and visions of being some kind of metaphysical interior designer of sorts?!

It pops into my mind often as I think about curation for any given event or opportunity to share the music that I love, I think of the physical space, those who will likely seek it out and the kind of experience they might like to have depending on time or circumstance...

When given the honour to warm up the stage for Opiuo, Jordan Dennis and Mood Swing & Chevy Bass at The Princess Theatre last month I felt a lot of feelings! First there was excitement, pride and shock which was closely followed by fear, harsh self judgement and doubt all tainted by a solid dose of impostor syndrome.

But when I stepped outside of my mind for a minute I genuinely knew that I could do it, I had all I needed to set the tone and style the evening decorating both time and space thanks to the beautiful music that had already found it's way to me.

Now on the other side of the experience I am pretty damn proud and so so grateful for all the friends who made the extra effort support me in their own special way whether it was during the lead up, in the flesh on the night or the days and weeks that followed as I reflected on it all

I have since enjoyed so many rich conversations about the art of performance from those in the know farther along the path than I am now. It has provided me with comfort, perspective and hope for the future as I anticipate a greater sense of ease to eventually be possible for me on stage.

As always my deepest most heartfelt thanks to the original creators of the tracks selected for this offering, each and every one of them has been recognised by my soul as the medicine it needed at any given time...an inner intelligence at work that is far beyond the scope of my imagination but much appreciated all the same.

On Nov 6th, 2013 the world music community lost a prolific contributor and friend, Cheb i Sabbah. I had the pleasure of knowing him through DJing with him, as well as hiring him for several festivals...and of course listening and dancing to him for 20 years. This morning I spontaneously put this little mix together that includes many of the artists he worked with...thank you to my dear friend Gaudi ( https://soundcloud.com/gaudi) and his brief interview with Cheb I which became the intro to this mix.

DRAGONFLY - CHEB I MEMORIAL  MIX (R.I.P.)

Love. What does it mean to you? There is a vast spectrum of how we experience love, perceive it, feel it, express it, and create it. During the month of February, I played two sets right around Valentine’s Day that had me organizing all my “love music.” I started to think about  all that love means to me. I noticed that in recent years, I’ve found myself searching for love in the form of a romantic relationship. Searching for a person who wants to receive my love and travel with me on this journey of life. With all that has passed, I’ve often thought, what can I do differently, what can I do better, what is it about me that is too much or not enough? In the midst of my reflections, I happened to come across the following quote by feminist writer, teacher, activist, and scholar Bell Hooks. She says, “I think that part of what a culture of domination has done is raise that romantic relationship up as the single most important bond, when of course the single most important bond is that of community.” It resonated with me so profoundly that I read it out while introducing myself before one of my sets. It made me more cognizant of the fact that the unending support of my community is what has carried me through the empty valleys of the lows. All that I am, all that I have, all that I can be, is rooted in community. I’m so grateful for all of you who are part of my life and continue to invest your time and energy into our relationship. It has been a hard last 6 months. With work causing me to retreat from my usual relationships, I have felt like an absent friend to many. A friend who hasn’t shown up isn’t who I want to be, and it hasn’t felt good. Nevertheless, I feel you. I get your messages of support. I know you are there for me even when I’m not able to be there for you, and that is so appreciated. While my community has carried me through my lows, you’ve also lifted me up to my highest highs. The collective joy we create on the dance floor is absolutely incredible. Bell Hooks writes in All About Love: New Visions, “whether we learn how to love ourselves and others will depend on the presence of a loving environment. Self-love cannot flourish in isolation,” and in a separate passage, “rarely, if ever, are any of us healed in isolation. Healing is an act of communion.” I wouldn't know how to love all parts of myself and others if it wasn’t for the loving environment that I am supported by. This community propels me to love more, to be love, and to embody it in my everyday interactions. I heal when I am with you. This last quote by Hooks is a reminder of how I can continue to grow my practice of love in my life and expand my notion of community. “We can begin the process of making community wherever we are. We can begin by sharing a smile, a warm greeting, a bit of conversation; by doing a kind deed or by acknowledging kindness offered to us. Doing this, we engage in love practice [... and] we lay the foundation for the building of community with strangers. The love we make in community stays with us wherever we go. With this knowledge as our guide, we make any place we go, a place where we return to love.” This mix is a dedication to you, my community. My best friends. My family. My loves. So "as the story goes":

"It was sometime back in 1962, when I found myself piloting a wheezing old Ford station wagon, feeling not just disoriented but positively misplaced on the dusty byways to Joshua Tree. The washboard roads shook my bones and rattled my teeth, so the accidental discovery of the sole watering hole in that barren wasteland was like stumbling upon an oasis. Despite its forlornly desiccated and saturnine exterior, the lonely backroads bar was an outpost that promised the desperate kind of salvation only dire needs can summon: Ritual libations. A stiff drink, and a moment's respite.

As I pushed through the nameless saloon’s swinging double doors, they creaked open to reveal an astonishing sight: Johnny Cash, Jim Morrison, Ennio Morricone, and Hope Sandoval, all seated together at the bar, deep in their cups. Behind the counter stood Barnett, the bartender, a sly vision of dry humor and endless spirits. They spotted my lonely silhouette and, with drunken enthusiasm, beckoned me to join their spirited symposium.
What followed was a cacophonous marathon of intemperance and debate, as we discoursed basslines and bourbon, whisky and women, UFOs and poetry, guitars and remixes, and…deep house.

The outcome of that wild and chewy night? This mix—a tribute to your culturally errant wanderings, a testament to “stepping into yes”, the uncharted paths we stumble upon…and the unexpected that ensues".

I envision an Otherworld where most of humanity can celebrate our individual and collective sensuality, intimacy and sexuality in a way that normalizes these aspects of the Self. Provocatively sassy (a house fusion) is simply a fun spin on this vision. If you have a vagina, have you ever looked at it with a mirror? If not, why haven't you explored "yoni gazing"? Some with a clitoris don't know where it is, and no judgement! Emily Nagoski has a book Come As You Are. It's incredible. How ever we are developed at the time of birth in all it's variance, is absolutely normal. Imagine if we all saw ourselves and the other as normal in the shapes of different lips, of all kinds (wink). As a 39 year old woman, I have come to understand our sensuality and sexuality is mighty powerful, and when it's dampened, repressed, or not fed, our creativity for one can be muted.
