TIMELESS VOL II

An amazing record recently landed in my post office box, an absolute classic of an album I honestly never thought I’d see in person let alone get a copy of: Winston Mankunku Ngozi’s quartet masterpiece “Yakhal Inkomo” - I insist everyone at least take a listen to this on Spotify or elsewhere. On this episode I've included the title track to start off the set. Pullin from the Stacks - Episode 179

Stones Throw & The Beat Junkies did a joint event that was put together by ArtDontSleep in the city of Los Angeles 3 weeks ago (10.26.13). it is the first time that Stones Throw & the Beat Junkies have joined forces to do a special event. Imagine Peanut Butter Wolf, Dam Funk, Prince Paul, Karriem Riggins, Rakaa Iriscience, LMNO, the Cypress Junkies, Jonwayne, & of course, the Beat Junkies all under one roof. Pullin some more eclectic protest records from the past that hopefully connects with the present. Big shout out to everyone staying in the streets and supporting the families of Michael Brown, Eric Garner and all the people murdered at the hands of law enforcement.

Pullin from the Stacks  Podcast (Episode 7 - Protest Music)

Figured it's a good time to re-up this tape from six years ago. I've been hesitant to do so since there's five million J. Dilla tribute tapes out there, but...whatever. Maybe you all will dig this one too! Here are the notes from the original release:

"I really dug Dilla, his choice of records, his lush filtered samples, his basslines, and the fact he loved to eat donuts. I was introduced to his genius by Jumbo of the Lifesavas. He hit me with a dub of the early Slum Village album before it dropped, and told me to dub it and give it back to him the next day, cuz that was his only copy. And even rocking a dub of a dub, the beats were just so ill. I’d bump the shit til I couldn’t take the rhmyes anymore, but I never got tired of the beats.

I’d wanted to do this tape for awhile, and felt I should put something together dedicated to Dilla, as I was a fan of his music. Not every beat or 12 inch, but the feel of his production – he just had a great ear for great records. This tape is a mixture of some of my favorite Dilla-related records (that I own on wax) from well-known to more obscure, from rock to classic hip-hop tracks. It is by no means any kind of compendium, and isn’t meant to be. It’s just a brief sampling of music I dig, music that represents the inspiration I took from Jay Dee."

Ending the year with a number of my favorite purchases this past year. Maybe one or two of these I actually "dug" up somewhere - the Dick Drew Trio was something I pulled out from deep under other record racks in a store in Las Vegas last May, for instance, but I also bought several of these via Discogs. Record collecting continues to change in ways that make it less familiar to me - many records are now status symbols for wealthy people to show off rather than listen to, when previously they were "status" symbols for many of us in terms of our digging commitment or record knowledge. Actual "digging" for records isn't something I've had as much time for, but still what I love. But shout out to the amazing dealers who are out there with the rusty shovels every week, finding these gold nuggets for the rest of us! And huge, huge thank you to all the people tuning into the podcast - you are massively appreciated!

This episode I invited my record-digging partner in crime, DO77 aka Verbal Math of Dollabin, to spin some of his favorites. It's a great fusion-filled set filled with all kinds of treats! In DO77's own words: "I love jazz fusion so I know it can go off the rails real quick. Don’t worry, I just threw together some chill fusion grooves by some of the usual suspects, a couple of lesser known gems, and Frank Zappa who is a genre by himself.
