Pullin From The Stacks - a personal selection

I've said it before, there's just so much good music - especially that categorized as "jazz" - coming out that isn't necessarily on vinyl. Additionally, I can't necessarily afford every new vinyl release, and so will occasionally grab a song or two off an album on Bandcamp. This is a set of recent-ish releases that I've found over the past few months, some might be available on vinyl, others might not, but hopefully you enjoy them all. While Pullin from the Stacks remains primarily based off records, I think I will start mixing in a selection or two through Serato here and there going forward.

Pullin from the Stacks - Episode 201

Sorry for the long delay, been a busy month. Starting to pack the records up now, so this will be my last mix at my current residence, and probably for another few weeks until I get things unpacked on the other side of LA. Kept things thematic for this one though - all jazz-related releases on the Melodiya label, which was the Soviet-era label that released records from not only Russia but other countries in region. Been slowly building a small stack of vinyl from this label and figured I'd play a few here. Enjoy!

Pullin from the Stacks - Some February Finds

I don't remember who hipped me to Frank Cunimondo - I think I saw one of his records in Rob and Damien's old shop Sideman Records and was intrigued but didn't buy it then. And then maybe someone posted on IG something off of "Echoes" and it was right up my ally - beautiful piano trio jazz with some rhodes as well. Snagged a copy of that album at WMFU a year later and was hooked. I know Dilla sampled one of his albums early but it's actually the only album of his I don't own - I just can't really get into Lynn Marino's voice, so that one isn't for me. But his other stuff is beautiful, independently released Pittsburgh jazz. I tried to play something from all his various albums (minus the Marino one) on here plus a bonus non-vinyl track. Enjoy!

Pullin from the Stacks - Episode 247 - Fusion Keys

Ending the year with a number of my favorite purchases this past year. Maybe one or two of these I actually "dug" up somewhere - the Dick Drew Trio was something I pulled out from deep under other record racks in a store in Las Vegas last May, for instance, but I also bought several of these via Discogs. Record collecting continues to change in ways that make it less familiar to me - many records are now status symbols for wealthy people to show off rather than listen to, when previously they were "status" symbols for many of us in terms of our digging commitment or record knowledge. Actual "digging" for records isn't something I've had as much time for, but still what I love. But shout out to the amazing dealers who are out there with the rusty shovels every week, finding these gold nuggets for the rest of us! And huge, huge thank you to all the people tuning into the podcast - you are massively appreciated!

Pullin from the Stacks - Favorite Finds of 2024

I was late to the library game, and only own a short stack of these gems, but for folks unaware, some amazing studio musicians (especially in Europe) recorded some of the funkiest and weirdest music on "library" records, that were available to radio and tv producers to use on their shows or elsewhere. Recently I discovered that one of the iconic sound effects associated with the early days of Portland Trailblazers broadcasts that I used to hear all the time as a kid actually came from a 1970s KPM record.

This episode I invited my record-digging partner in crime, DO77 aka Verbal Math of Dollabin, to spin some of his favorites. It's a great fusion-filled set filled with all kinds of treats! Don’t worry, I just threw together some chill fusion grooves by some of the usual suspects, a couple of lesser known gems, and Frank Zappa who is a genre by himself. Rounding out the year, I selected a few of my favorite 2020 aquisitions - I can't call most of these digs because I think all of them appeared in my mailbox at some point. A few I'd been after forever, along with a couple beautiful new releases. I hope everyone enjoys, and I want to again extend a huge thanks to all those who've tuned in this past year, and those who graciously put together guest sets for the podcast - J.
