Premiere: Max Ulis ‘Detroit Tale (ft. Khari McClelland)’

West Coast Canada producer and DJ Jesse Bru, as well as being a regular on SlothBoogie Records, has been releasing his twist on contemporary house via the likes of Happiness Therapy, Pulse Msc and Inhale Exhale amongst others in recent years.

Here we see him team up with fellow Vancouver-based artist Max Ulis, who also operates as one half of the duo Sabota.

‘Banh Mi’ leads the way and much like the Vietnamese delicacy itself lays down a delectable soul-infused feel filled with dubbed out chords, distorted drums, and vocal chants.

‘Moisture Cult’ follows and retains a similarly dubbed out feel, fusing spiralling stab echoes and pulsating subs with shuffled drums.

‘TBH’ then shifts focus over to a modern electro feel with crunchy 808 drums, snaking arpeggio lines, resonant leads, and elongated subs.

‘Semblance’ which twists and turns through choppy breaks, intricately intertwined bass stabs, plucked synths and airy atmospherics before

‘Big Chirp’ rounds out the release on a raw house tip with swinging drums, squelchy acid bass tones and sweeping ethereal pads.

Impatience had got the better of them, it felt as though they'd been waiting around for an eternity for something to happen. The longer they waited, the slower time seemed to pass; a minute felt like an hour and an hour like a day. A change had to come soon, chronic boredom would inevitably set in and before too long they'd become sick of each other's presence. They were tired of playing the waiting game.

Vancouver-based label Club Designs have announced their third VA release, and the second shining a light on fresh electro sounds. Having previously paid homage to the sounds of ghetto house, the imprint now turn their attention back to the Detroit genre with eight artists showcasing their take on it through a modern lens. Label bosses Garneau and Sharkki deliver tracks, alongside their label mate Dj Failure, and several new artists including Ghostwhip, Partick Cure, Stuster, Max Ulis and Destrata.

Skins continues forging his own path with a new label celebrating the uplifting and futuristic sounds of jungle, with a four-tracker featuring tracks with early support from Katiusha, Tañ and Frazer Ray.

Whilst some will know Skins from his days DJing regularly around Oxford, his run of self-released white label techno EPs or 2021’s underground hit 24 Hour Dub, more recently he has turned his attention back to the music which made him fall in love with it all in the first place:

“I vividly remember the effect that the futuristic sounds of 90s jungle and drum ‘n’ bass had on me as a kid, hearing snippets of tracks in video games and later stumbling across artists like Alaska, Future Engineers, Seba, Peshay and LTJ Bukem. Following his 2022 ‘Natural Selection’ EP and music on Comma Trax, Troubleshoot Recordings, and Draconian Audio, Scaefa returns to La bonne musique with three nostalgic club cuts. The London party and label has built a roster of talent comprised of artists like Sempra, Small Crab and Akumen, with a catalogue of quality rave music spanning techno, bass, and breaks.

“I spent a lot of time listening to 90s trance and UK jungle/hardcore pirate radio mixes whilst making these tunes, and the result is an amalgam of breaks/techno/trance and ambient moments. This project is nostalgic musically and emotionally, with the tracks made in a period of my life spent looking back/reflecting on the past. I find the music to be both euphoric and melancholic at times.” - Scaefa

‘Symbiosis’ opens up Scaefa’s ‘Ambrosia’ EP with mysterious swirling synths, anticipation building before culminating into a racy Reese bass finish, this is before ‘Locate’ continues with more breakbeats which carefully carve and slice their way through rich melodies and vibrant stabs. The title track is up next, pads swelling in the background as pitched-up vocals and a subtle 303 complement its fast-paced jungle drums. La bonne musique co-founder n_o, formerly known as bad internet, closes out the release, turning ‘Locate’ into a retro acid techno and house hybrid complete with exhilarating stabs and organic rhythm.
