Had such a fantastic time playing at @valhallafest this year that I decided to post my set. 120 minutes of fun, daytime vibes to get you in the dancing mood.

What’s the point of your DJ career? I came across a great article addressing this question on First Floor that was featured back in Oct (link below). I paraphrase below some of the points that stuck out to me.

DJing itself isn’t particularly difficult; literally anyone can DJ. Fine… that’s fun. But there’s this odd pressure for DJs to constantly project success; irrespective of whether or not things are actually going well. Is what they are doing actually creatively fulfilling? Good question.

I’ve been lucky enough to be on most sides of the creative equation in the scene and certainly feel less pressure at this point in my music journey to project success; simply focussing my production on my roots in house, breaks and D&B has been rewarding enough. Seems like the less serious I take it, the more dividends it pays. So maybe there’s no point, just running with it?

I agree with the article: it’s unfortunate how much DJs decisions these days are likely to be influenced by ... prevailing narratives about what a DJ career is supposed to look like… aka, an artist’s only options are to become an international touring juggernaut or remain “just” a local DJ. 

The article goes on... DJs can take their craft seriously without depending on gigs as their sole source of income. Plenty of great DJs hold down other jobs... I do. I’ve seen a lot of clout chasers and people who just want to get famous. They will always exist but dance music, especially underground, should distance itself from the glorification of continuous growth and mindless hustle culture.

The article's has a point, there’s no shame in having a day job, and there’s nothing wrong with being a DJ who doesn’t travel, or only plays the occasional out-of-town show. For DJs, there is no single “correct” path, and aiming for something lower than global domination shouldn’t be regarded as a failure.

I appreciate how the article suggests normalizing ignoring the voices that tell artists, “you’re not getting enough recognition” and encourage them to focus instead on following their creative impulses, wherever they may lead.

Normalize not thinking of DJing in career terms.

Its a great read for new and long time DJs. I wanted to share that.

Here’s my set from @valhallafestival at Asgard stage on Saturday June 29th (7pm) where I had the pleasure of getting the party warmed up; track list below.

This deep house reimagining of Hiatus Kaiyote's Red Room transforms the original's dreamy intimacy into a hypnotic dancefloor journey. Lush, slow-rising chords and atmospheric synths build a sense of emotional gravity, anchored by a deep, rolling bassline and a solid four-on-the-floor kick. It's my moody, soulful interpretation of one of my favourite songs of late. Hope you like.

I wanted to capture what it’s like to be in, both, healthy and unhealthy relationships with this mix. Each track has a specific purpose and you may experience a different set of emotions with each; highs and lows, ebbs and flow. My own personal experience with relationships has been… a journey. I’ve learned that my person will share the same intense feeling for things I feel intensely about like culture, cuddling and above all music. I left some food for thought at the very end.

This summer has been especially ritualistic for me as I have appreciated more the art of getting outside and wandering. Summer is supposed to be fun and nostalgic and I wanted to capture that in this mix. Inspired by the aesthetic of the Mandrn brand where summer meets art meets curiosity meets wandering. Enjoy.

Bio:
A true creative, Ricco finds inspiration in music by exploring sounds through DJing and producing. Ricco is a passionate house music enthusiast with a focus on funky, deep, and rhythm-rich sounds that blend Latin, Tech and Afro influences. With almost 3 decades of djing under his belt, Ricco has held a handful of residencies in Vancouver, including Goodhousekeeping at Fortune Sound Club, La Discotech at Modern, Fast Life at Republic and Lotus Sound Lounge. Major Festival appearances include Basscoast Festival, Shambhala Music Festival and Valhalla Music Festival. Additionally, ricco has also played at some of Vancouver’s most notable music venues such as Beaumont Studios, Gorg-O-Mish, Open Studios, and the internationally acclaimed Commodore Ballroom. 

Direct support includes a laundry list of international acts such as Gene Farris, Claptone, Derrick Carter, Mark Farina, Sebastien Leger, Sandy Rivera, Justin Jay, Dennis Ferrer, Zombie Disco Squad, Metro Area, Cut Chemist, 
 Ardalan, Dam Swindle, J.Phlip, The Greenskeepers, Pillow Talk, Johnny Fiasco, Fashmob, DJ ILLO, The Funk Hunters, Jesse Bru, DJ Heather, Tony 
 Quattro, DJ Spider and Lawnchair Generals. 

Recently, Ricco has dipped his toes into producing, having produced, remixed and collaborated on over a dozen releases since his production journey began 2020. 

As comfortable behind the decks as he is behind the scenes, Ricco is actively involved in the music scene through event curation under the JK Gaultier brand, hosting Goodhousekeeping Radio on Bside Radio, a monthly residency (Cue Club at the Fox Cabaret), the JKG Mix Series, stage curating for Valhalla Music Festival and a committee member for the Junos Awards Underground Dance Single of the Year. 

The joy of seeing people from all walks of life on his dance floors is what keeps Ricco motivated; making someone’s day better through music, song and dance.
