“Zooming In” is a mix series focusing on African countries that the world seldom hears from and listens to. The selection is mostly composed of songs that haven’t been commercially released and float around in ephemeral online libraries.

"Seychelles" may conjure up images of pristine beaches on the edge of the world, tax havens for dodgy corporations, a playground for the international jet set… Unfortunately, what doesn’t spring to mind is the incredible mosaic of cultures found on this archipelago in the Indian Ocean. This is due to a fascinating creolisation of European, Arab and African influences, with more recent infusions of Chinese and Indian elements. 

Evidence of this diversity is revealed in Seychellois music, a cross-section of the nation’s history. The Seychelles have indeed been the fertile ground for distinctive homegrown songs and sounds for centuries, despite having the smallest population of any African country. Positioned along the trade routes, the Seychelles have long had cultural and musical influences from the Mediterranean, the Middle East, Eastern Africa and South Asia. To this day, one can find various vibrant scenes on the 116 islands: African slave music (Moutya, Kamtole, Sega from Mauritius, Maloya from La Réunion), dance styles from the European colonizers (Contredanse, Polka, Mazurka), Pan-African powerhouses like Zouk and Soukous and international phenomenons like Reggae, Hip-Hop and Dancehall.

Uninhabited prior to being encountered by Europeans in the 16th century, the Seychelles faced competing French and British interests until coming under full British control in the late 18th century. The islands were named after Jean Moreau de Séchelles, Louis XV's Minister of Finance. Since the country's independence from the U.K. in 1976, French and English are official languages along with Seychellois Creole ("seselwa"), the most widely spoken native language of the country.

Nowadays, the Seychelles boast the highest nominal per capita GDP of any African nation. It is one of only two countries in Africa classified as a high-income economy by the World Bank. Despite its relative prosperity, poverty remains widespread as the country has one of the highest levels of economic inequality in the world, with the upper ruling class commanding a vast proportion of the country's wealth.

Geographically isolated but culturally rich, the Seychelles' musical roots run deep and wide... when one is willing to step outside its luxury resorts!

Ah la la, ce satané argent qui — en Afrique francophone comme ailleurs — nous obsède, turlupine et tourmente ! Ce troisième volume recueille des témoignages provenant de dix pays, d'îles et du continent, chantés en majeure partie en français, à écouter fort et à partager vite.

Le mix traverse divers soucis pécuniers comme on feuillette une liasse de billets, allant des tracas causés par les exigences de la belle famille — cette fameuse dot qui coûte bien cher aux maris ! — jusqu'aux exodes migratoires causés par le chômage local ("Sans papier", Bill Clinton).

"Monsieur l'Argent, où es-tu ?", désespère la légende congolaise Bopol Mansiamina. "Si tu suis l'argent, tu vas mourir très jeune", prévient le Gabonais Oussou 1er. "Because no money", on en vient à "oublier la famille" voire "à tuer sa mère". La peur du manque nous plonge dans l'angoisse d'avoir un jour à "demander la charité", mettant la pression à devenir riche pour pouvoir se marier et flamber face aux faux amis ("Dans ta galère tu luttes seul mais quand l'argent vient tout le monde est là")... 

On retrouve dans cette sélection toute une série de personnages travaillés par cette question du labeur : un avare qui ne fait plus de cadeaux à sa dulcinée une fois son coeur empoché ("Donne-lui l’argent", DJ Leo), un jeune ambitieux qui rêve de capital ("Je ne vais pas finir dans maison à louer, je vivrai dans ma propre maison") . Les gouvernements en prennent aussi pour leur grade, exhortés à "baisser le prix du riz et augmenter le prix du whisky" pour une société plus saine ou bien critiqués pour leur corruption endémique ("c'est le collecteur d'impôts qui s'enrichit").

This third volume attempts to paint a broad picture of contemporary African hip-hop by putting forward 35 songs from 20 countries which stray from both the "classic 90's old school" nostalgia and the seemingly never-ending trap/drill craze. Make room for Kenyan Gengetone, Rap-Mbalax from Senegal and bouncy Ethiopian bumps!

While some may find in this (re)localized hip-hop some traces of its original African-American DNA, it remains clear to the ears that the MCs and producers showcased here infuse their very own narratives, flows & rhythms into their tracks.

Footichistes & mélomanes férus de musiques africaines, voilà votre cadeau de Noël déballé et/ou votre voeu de nouvelle année déjà exaucé : un mix de compétition de 15 chansons réunissant vos deux passions ! Alors que le coup d’envoi de la 33ème édition de la Coupe d’Afrique des Nations (CAN) s’apprête à être sifflé au Cameroun le 9 Janvier 2022, voici en guise de préparation mentalo-musicale un petit palmarès perso de chansons d’Afrique francophone consacrées au football de ces 50 dernières années. 

Qu’elles soient commanditées par les institutions, les sponsors ou bien qu’elles viennent tout droit du coeur de musiciens-supporters, ces chansons veillent à fédérer les peuples dans des danses de joie et de communion autour du sport national. Parsemés de touches de nationalisme soft et d’optimisme de fan ("La victoire est à nous"), elles veillent aussi à rappeler l’importance du fair-play et de l’esprit d’équipe. Les footballeurs eux-mêmes sont souvent mis à l’honneur dans les textes, tels que les légendes camerounaises Samuel Eto’o et Roger Milla. Et de cinq épisodes ! Voici une nouvelle série d’histoirettes savoureuses dans lesquelles la guerre des sexes fait rage au rythme des tambours malmenés de l’amour chagriné. Passez des rires aux pleurs en découvrant cette galerie de personnages hauts en douleurs dont les déboires sont narrés aux sons enivrants du Makossa, de la Cavacha, de l’Assiko, de la Rumba, de l'Afro-Zouk, du Zouglou et autres. Faisant la part belle à un noyau de pépites congolaises, cette mixture de mésaventures sonde aussi des répertoires plus rarement minés : des Baoulés d’Ivoire aux Bamilékés du Cameroun, de Kigali à Bangui, des Seychelles au Bénin.

"Ah, vous les hommes !" se lamente ceux qui ne voient dans le mâle qu'un "tireur d'élite qui tire sur tout qui bouge". Eux qui "n’ont plus rien dans le coeur" et "tout en bas" délaissent leurs compagnes aux corps vieillissants pour des plus jeunes : "Avec ce matos fatigué, y’a pas garçon pour toi !" ; "Pourquoi tu vas ailleurs, parce que j'ai des vergétures ? C’est parce que j'ai eu 5 enfants ! Profite bien avec ta petite qui vient de naître, quand elle aura des enfants, tu verras !". On nous parle même d’un mari prédateur qui traîne devant le lycée pour convoiter des mineures…. pourtant "le viagra, ce c’est pas pour jouer aux super-héros ailleurs !". Ces infidèles en viennent à ne plus respecter la gent féminine : "Attention aux hommes mariés, car nous les femmes célibataires nous sommes chosifiées". 

Les femmes qui "cachent la vérité", "décoivent" et "découragent" ne sont pas en reste en termes de fourberie, puisqu'on nous raconte dès le premier titre comment une jalouse fait semblant de tomber enceinte pour forcer un homme à la marier. S’ensuit alors le conte d'une vierge s’attirant les foudres de son village après avoir été mystérieusement "enceintée par un cheetah". Que dire de Magaly, semeuse de trouble qui "tchatche mon mec" et "checke mon mari" à la première occasion venue. Les charmes vénéneux des tentatrices font tourner la tête aux amants épris : "Si je ne te vois pas, je tombe malade" ; "Moi y’en a pas sommeil à cause de toi" ; "Ton visage me brûle comme la lune dans la nuit". Dénaturé par l’obsession de la dulcinée, le soupirant voudrait alors pouvoir "redevenir lui-même". D’autres vont même jusqu’à se plaindre de carences affectives : "T’es devenue méchante, même pas de câlins, de bisous !". Le vieux reproche de la vénalité de la femme matérialiste est évoqué : "Sa tête est rivée à deux choses : l'épaisseur du chèquier et la grosseur du porte-monnaie".

The rich and gorgeous music of the landlocked Central African Republic is little-known outside of its borders, and much of it has to do with decades of authoritarian rule and the ongoing civil war plaguing the country since the beginning of the 21st century: state support for the arts comes last when infrastructures crumble under the weight of war. 

Things haven't always been this grim though. The country was host to a vibrant scene in the 60’s and 70’s following its independence from France in 1958. Local legends such as prolific songwriters and bandleaders Prosper Mayélé (Tropical Jazz, Vibro Succès) and Thierry Yézo (Formidable Muziki, Tropical Fiesta) would play Bangui’s celebrated clubs like the Rex, Ciel d’Afrique and the Dragon Rouge and often hit the regional road with success.

Beyond crafting its own flavours of Rumba and Soukous due to the overbearing influence of two neighboring Congos during this "golden age", Centrafrique has nurtured its own fascinating set of musical roots due to its dozen of ethnical groups such as the Ak(k)a Pygmies living in the equatorial rainforest and the Oubanguins ("gens du fleuve") who dwell on the river edge and speak Sango, a language creolized with French and the country's other official language.
 
Nowadays, while some mimic other African or occidental trends, many Centrafrican musicians strive to keep their uniqueness alive. They pay the price by being overlooked in favor of domineering neighbours such as Cameroon and the D.R.C., which benefit from older and stronger musical ecosystems. When scouring the web, one finds a dizzying amount of low-quality uploads of high-quality tracks with frantic beats, intricate polyrhythms and mesmerizing polyphonies such as the yodel-sounding singing stemming from the Ak(k)a Pygmies. Dance and trance-inducing rhythms such as the Montè Nguènè ("pleasure" in Mbati) also derive from a celebrated Ngbaka Pygmy tradition from the Lobaye and were popularized by the band Zokela in the 80’s. The multi-layered genre has become the poster child for Centrafrique’s own musical identity on both rural und urban dancefloors.

Zooming In, Vol. 3 · Central African Republic

One of the go-to terms for anything “tropical” nowadays, Zouk is a music genre born in the late 70’s in the French Antillean islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique. Zouk's first iteration was crafted by the band Kassav’ when bandleaders Desvarieux and Décimus longed for a local "Disco-type music”, thus proudly proposing their own homegrown brand of pop. Carved around the foundation of an infectious pattern carried by hi-hat cymbals, Zouk was created as a weapon to elevate the status of frowned-upon Antillean cultural practices. It was a powerful response to the musical and political domination of France and other regions of the Caribbean. Kassav' paved the way for the groundbreaking genre to become both culturally relevant and commercially viable beyond the Antilles, reaching a career high in 1985 with a global hit in which they cheekily claim that Zouk is "the only medicine they need".

Borrowing elements from the neighboring islands - such as Cadence-lypso from Dominica and Compas from Haiti - Zouk’s signature sound was also shaped by the tools from the burgeoning digital age, as musicians and producers embraced the MIDI technology with its promise of fun through loop-programming. Many of these eager pioneers jumped head in and didn't shy from manufacturing anvil-sounding snare drums, wacky vocal modulations, epic horns, saturated bass and sexy synths... all of it duly drenched in reverb!

Perceived right away by some stiff necks as low-brow entertainment inducing lewd motions of the hips, Zouk was actually the result of incredibly sophisticated recording technology and visionary talent. Although derided in the distant French “métropole” - with hits from bands such as “La Compagnie Créole” and “Zouk Machine” relegated to camping and carnival DJ playlists - Zouk invaded the African continent within a decade. The familiarity of Zouk’s underlying rhythm spoke to many through the deep and complex web of pre-slavery roots connecting Africa to the Caribbean.

Whereas most white French music snobs disregarded Zouk as a synonym for bad taste and cheesy regionalism - sometimes with the racist tinge of colonial contempt - African listeners loved it for what it was: a kick-ass beat to sweat to, especially while dancing close to a partner. Since the early 80’s, African musicians have been paying homage to the couple-friendly genre, quoting words from the creole lexicon (“Doudou”) and blending in their own territorial twists: be it in francophone (Makossa, Rumba, Soukous) or lusophone countries (Tarraxinha, Kizomba, Coladeira). A lot of Afro Zouk legends actually met, hung out and worked in recording studios and DJ booths of the cosmopolitan city of Paris, which has been acting as the cross-pollinating hub of French-speaking black diasporas since the 70's.

Afro Zouk, Vol. 2 • Bonded By Beat

Nées de la nécessité pour les esclaves aux origines diverses de communiquer à l’insu des colons, les langues créoles sont le fruit du mélange de sens et de sons empruntés aux langues et dialectes de peuples rentrés en collision du fait de l’Histoire. Plus de 10 millions de personnes sur trois continents ont la créolité en partage depuis trois siècles. Dans ces communautés et pays structurés par l’histoire de la colonisation esclavagiste et racialisée, les langues créoles sont partout uniques en leur genre et en constante évolution.  

Cette sélection assemble quelques exemples de mises en musique des problématiques liées à l'utilisation de la langue créole dans un contexte postcolonial. Nous nous intéressons dans ce mix aux territoires francophones des Antilles et de l’Océan Indien. Continuer à y parler le créole de sa famille et de son terroir, c’est donc autant une façon d’honorer ses racines africaines et familiales que de faire (sur)vivre sa culture minoritaire face à la France et au français. Dans ces zones insulaires entre deux eaux, la diglossie prend souvent le pas sur le bilinguisme, le français éclipsant le créole dans des perspectives d’ascension sociale. On peut y voir le combat de David contre Goliath, de la ruralité contre la mondialisation, de la modestie provinciale contre le prestige social, des descendants d’esclaves contre les néo-colons. Être fier de sa langue et de son accent, c’est à l’échelle individuelle une étape importante dans la connaissance et l'affirmation de soi et à l’échelle communautaire un pas de plus vers la sauvegarde de sa culture d’origine dans une planète globalisée où se lissent les différences au profit des mastodontes. 

La musique est un lieu idéal d’affirmation d’une fierté en construction et le moyen d’expression d’une certaine "confusion" (comme le chante Erick Paul) créée par ce bilinguisme qui écartèle. On parle aussi de musiques créoles: "ni noires, ni blanches", comme l’écrivait Bertrand Dicale, ces musiques sont elles aussi la fusion entre les mélodies et rythmes africains et européens des générations précédentes ainsi que des influences présentes sur leur lieu de création. Voix et porte-voix du peuple, des musiciens créolophones luttent contre ce complexe d’infériorité et d’insécurité linguistique, adressant un message de revalorisation et de réappropriation heureuse face aux dangers de l’assimilation: "Parler français, non !.. Parler créole !" clame le chanteur haïtien Rodrigue Millien.

By the way of violent struggles or strategic political pressure, more than 40 African countries went through the de-colonization process in the 60’s and 70’s. These key moments in a people’s history were portrayed by musicians who painted detailed pictures of their nations in transition.

Hope, pride, justice, it was all mixed in this exciting era where everything was suddenly possible. Africans were finally regaining control over their fate. Things would soon turn sour, but that’s another story… told in Volume 2 !

Independent Africa, Vol. 1 • High On Hope

African nations faced many problems following their independence, some obvious - constant changing of power or ever-lasting dynasties, for example - and others more hidden but just as noxious - corruption, neo-colonialism, neo-slavery. Still to this day, major issues remain and regularly threaten peace and political stability in many African countries.

Music is here again as a powerful tool to depict reality and express feelings of anger, frustration and a wish for change. While some songwriters defy the rotten system from the fringe, others are recruited by governments to write propaganda songs with catchy hooks as an attempt to cover up the harsh truth.

This mixtape is an attempt at covering many aspects of the aftermath of African independences, showcasing many musical genres and lyrical points of view : from Hip-Hop to Calypso, from Zouglou to Kpalango and even French chanson.

African Hip-Hop(s), Vol. 1 • Chill Pills

Ah, la laaa ! Qui veut bien me « faroter » un « plomb » ivoirien ou même un « fafiot » camerounais ? Je suis « moisi », un vrai « rienneux », et j’ai besoin de « gagner jeton » ! 

Voici une liasse de chansons d'Afrique Francophone qui évoquent la lutte quotidienne pour cet argent hélas indispensable à la (sur)vie. « Bon serviteur mais mauvais maître », l’argent est « trop zinzin » à tel point qu’un chanteur est prêt à nous traiter comme « Jésus-Christ » si on lui donne 5000 Francs CFA. Véritable « clé du monde » pour certains, un « phénomène qui nous blesse » pour d’autres, il faut faire attention à bien le « gérer » dans sa « course à la fortune », sans « trahir son voisin » ou « oublier père et mère » pour autant !

Les voix de la jeunesse contemporaine se mêlent à celles des vieux sages, et plusieurs points de vue sont partagés avec enthousiasme : 
- La détresse d’un séducteur fauché qui doit se résigner à un soda plutôt qu’une bière afin de pouvoir inviter celle qu’il courtise (et un autre qui prévient qu'il faut "cotiser" et "jeter le billet")
- L’avertissement d’une femme à son prétendant précisant qu’elle préfère son amour à son argent
- Le ras-le-bol d’un jeune qui se fait toujours arnaquer par un pompiste qui n’a « pas la monnaie »
- La sagesse de celle qui déconseille de rechigner à faire ces petits boulots qu’il faut « respecter »
- La complainte d’une Malienne exilée en France (les fameux « binguistes ») qui galère à trouver un boulot avec en plus « le froid et la neige »
- Le pamphlet enflammé d’un Congolais qui se fait toujours refuser crédit parce qu’il est pauvre
- La mise en garde contre cet argent qui crée la zizanie car il « attire les amis » mais « détruit l’amitié »
- La chanson de protestation d'un Béninois qui exige que l'on paye à son peuple l'argent "volé" et "détourné" par des élites qui ne sont que des "déliquants" et des "ivrognes" 
- L’invitation à ne pas juger trop durement les filles qui « vendent le piment » pour payer leur loyer…

Les paroles parfois amusantes et souvent émouvantes se déclinent avec énergie sur des rythmes propres aux genres variés et dansants qui font vibrer l’Afrique francophone : Zouglou, Rap, Reggae, Rumba, Coupé-Décalé, Bikutsi !..

En conclusion, rappelons ce proverbe africain : « L'argent est bien, mais l'homme est meilleur, parce qu'il répond quand on l'appelle."

From the T-Pain swagger era to Lady Gaga’s stadium-sized antics, up to today’s robotic-sounding trappers, the overuse of this audio processor has become one of the standards of mainstream pop music. Long used behind the scenes as a barely noticeable and almost shameful pitch/time corrector, it is now played for effect, loudly and proudly distorting many voices on FM radio. As a result, it has become synonymous with "bad taste" and "fake," many listeners believing that it is employed as an easy trick to cover a lack of musical talent.

This first mixtape is an attempt at showing the incredible beauty and variety of music featuring Auto-Tune manipulations. Let’s turn our ears away for a moment from the dominant musical output from the Western world, and focus on the plethora of unfairly overlooked African songs. Auto-Tune has indeed democratized access to music making and quickly become hybridized and assimilated into the popular African music tradition, particularly in North Africa.

After digging for sonic gold for days and nights, lending a curious and attentive ear to these songs, I remain convinced that all the singers featured here can actually sing. The ill-reputed software is actually often employed not as a quick fix to patch up mistakes made by self-conscious amateurs, but as a purposeful aesthetic flourish, a bold artistic choice even. I definitely don’t hear the homogenized, emotionless music made by tone-deaf "gerbils" that high-brow critics like to chastise, but hey, maybe that’s just me. I hope that some of these amazing tracks and genuine performances change your mind about that "dreadful Auto-Tune warble." If anyone should take the blame for a generic and uninspired song resulting from the homogenization of music, I tend to think it is the songwriter (and the performer, though less), and not any recording or producing technology…

So, purists: beware! We’re now venturing off the beaten track where off-key is not an option. This audio journey will take the fearless listener from the Sahel sands to Somali suburbs, from Chad to Mozambique, from balani to shangaan! The second volume of the series will focus on more mainstream sounds, exploring Afrobeats pop gems from Nigeria, Ghana and beyond.

Auto-Tuned Africa, Vol. 1 • Wonderful Warbles

Jamais deux sans tr❤is ! J’ai mis beaucoup de tendresse dans la confection du troisième volume de cette série célébrant les magnifiques chansons d’amour douces-amères d’Afrique Francophone. Faisant comme toujours le grand écart entre bijoux vintage pour vinyleux et nouvelles pépites compressées à souhait, cette nouvelle sélection explore nombre de sujets crève-coeur d’actualité pour les couples du monde entier.

On pourra par exemple apprécier au creux des paroles les obligatoires dénonciations de la jalousie ("Maladie des amoureux" / "Les jaloux ne connaissent pas la honte"), les habituelles pleurnicheries suite aux adultères et aux ruptures ("Depuis que tu m’as quitté, je crève"), les lamentations liées aux infatuations unilatérales ("Je te donne la main et tu refuses !" / "Si tu savais comment je t’aime, toi aussi tu dois m’aimer") ainsi que les déplorations de mariages trop négligés ("Devant les gens, tu ne me fais plus bisou").

D’autres textes explorent pléthore d'autres thématiques tristement contemporaines : une chanteuse témoigne d’hommes odieux traitant les femmes comme des "jouets" ou des "chiffons" tandis qu’une autre "très embrouillée" nous confie que sa beauté, sa "gentillesse" et son "sourire" lui donne des "problèmes"… Un chansonnier dépeint avec brio le dilemme d’être dépendant économique d’un mari notoirement trompeur malgré les exhortations des proches à le quitter : "J’ai le loyer à payer (…) J’ai les enfants à nourrir".

A cette galerie de coeurs cabossés se greffent de singuliers personnages : un homme qui supplie pour revenir en couple ("Je reconnais ma faute... je ne veux pas de rivale") , une femme à qui on reproche de reverser à son amant l’argent que lui donne son mari ("Quand j’ai donné toi, tu donnais à Moussa !"), un amant abandonné qui cherche en vain celle qui l'a quitté à tel point qu'il se demande si elle ne serait pas "tombée dans la mer", une célibataire qui se plaint d'être seule et qui a besoin d'une "couverture naturelle pendant la saison des pluies", un homme qui voit positivement une rupture amoureuse ("Ne regrette pas car la vie continue") & autres narrateurs hauts en couleurs !

Dansez, souriez & sanglotez au son de rythmes parmi les plus enlevés du continent : Rumba, Soukous, Makoussa, Zouk, Bikutsi et j’en passe !

« Amoul Problem ! » is a new selection of songs from Francophone Africa dealing with the various complications of love, marriage and romance. (Warning for the text-savvy : they are sung mostly in French as well as native languages.)

Considering the seemingly bottomless well of great songs on the subject, I had no choice but to put together a third volume mixing vintage gems and brand new tracks. As always, the lyricists describe brilliantly many common situations experienced by couples around the world : jealousy, adultery, forced marriages, marriages that fall apart, singledom & many more !

Dance, smile, sigh & sob to these stories told to the sound of some of the grooviest beats of the continent : Rumba, Soukous, Makossa, Zouk, Bikutsi and more !

Auto-Tuned Africa, Vol. 3 • "Fake It Till You Make It" (Pop-Kultur Special)

One of the go-to terms for anything “tropical” nowadays, Zouk is a music genre born in the late 70’s in the French Antillean islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique. Zouk's first iteration was crafted by the band Kassav’ when bandleaders Desvarieux and Décimus longed for a local "Disco-type music”, thus proudly proposing their own homegrown brand of pop. Carved around the foundation of an infectious pattern carried by hi-hat cymbals, Zouk was created as a weapon to elevate the status of frowned-upon Antillean cultural practices. It was a powerful response to the musical and political domination of France and other regions of the Caribbean. Kassav' paved the way for the groundbreaking genre to become both culturally relevant and commercially viable beyond the Antilles, reaching a career high in 1985 with a global hit in which they cheekily claim that Zouk is "the only medicine they need".

Borrowing elements from the neighboring islands - such as Cadence-lypso from Dominica and Compas from Haiti - Zouk’s signature sound was also shaped by the tools from the burgeoning digital age, as musicians and producers embraced the MIDI technology with its promise of fun through loop-programming. On top of the exciting new effects offered by other music-making machines, it opened up a whole new world of experimentation. Many of these eager pioneers jumped head in and didn't shy from manufacturing anvil-sounding snare drums, wacky vocal modulations, epic horns, saturated bass and sexy synths... all of it duly drenched in reverb!

Perceived right away by some stiff necks as low-brow entertainment inducing lewd motions of the hips, Zouk was actually the result of incredibly sophisticated recording technology and visionary talent. Although derided in the distant French “métropole” - with hits from bands such as “La Compagnie Créole” and “Zouk Machine” relegated to camping and carnival DJ playlists - Zouk invaded the African continent within a decade. The familiarity of Zouk’s underlying rhythm spoke to many through the deep and complex web of pre-slavery roots connecting Africa to the Caribbean.

Whereas most white French music snobs disregarded Zouk as a synonym for bad taste and cheesy regionalism - sometimes with the racist tinge of colonial contempt - African listeners loved it for what it was: a kick-ass beat to sweat to, especially while dancing close to a partner. Since the early 80’s, African musicians have been paying homage to the couple-friendly genre, quoting words from the creole lexicon (“Doudou”) and blending in their own territorial twists: be it in francophone (Makossa, Rumba, Soukous) or lusophone countries (Tarraxinha, Kizomba, Coladeira). A lot of Afro Zouk legends actually met, hung out and worked in recording studios and DJ booths of the cosmopolitan city of Paris, which has been acting as the cross-pollinating hub of French-speaking black diasporas since the 70's.

African Beats & Pieces • Valentine's Special, February 2020 @ Monarch (Mixanthrope Live Mix)

“Zooming In” is a mix series focusing on African countries that the world seldom hears from and listens to. The selection is mostly composed of songs that haven’t been commercially released and float around in ephemeral online libraries.

Formerly the colony of Spanish Guinea, Equatorial Guinea's post-independence name evokes its location near both the Equator and the Gulf of Guinea. Its economy traditionally depended on three commodities — cocoa , coffee, and timber — but the discovery of petroleum and natural gas under the seafloor of its offshore waters changed the country’s economic profile virtually overnight in the 1980s. Petroleum now accounts for the vast majority of its exports and more than four-fifths of its GDP.

Despite having become the richest country per capita in Africa, the wealth is distributed extremely unevenly, with few people benefiting from the oil riches. The standard of living of most people has not significantly improved and farming continues to be the predominant occupation. The country ranks 144th on the 2019 Human Development Index with less than half the population having access to clean drinking water. The authoritarian government has one of the worst human rights records in the world. President Obiang has had a firm grip on power since 1979 and has repeatedly come under investigation for corruption.

As is often the case in dictatorships, culture is criminally under-funded and left to survive at the margins of a careless state. Equatorial Guinea's music has therefore been much less documented than most African countries, and commercial recordings remain scarce. Except for a 1950 collection of field recordings, there is still no compilation to this day that showcases the country’s rich musical output. But even without governmental efforts to support the music of its own people, songs in the digital age always find a way out.

Outsiders can now access audio and video files uploaded by anonymous heroes who are eager to show the world what their country has to offer. One just needs to adjust their listening standards when dealing with low-res MP3s converted from platforms such as YouTube and Soundcloud. These sources act as the sole entry portals into the country’s songbook, which is unsurprisingly bursting with creativity: call-and-response chants of female choirs (“Coro”), pop bangers coated with a gorgeous AutoTune sheen, groovy bass licks and relentless pounding percussions.

Despite a veneer of Spanish culture and Roman Catholic religion, many Equatorial Guineans live according to ancient customs, which have undergone a revival since independence in 1968. Among the Fang of the mainland, traditional music and storytelling live on. Among the Bubi farmers of the Bioko island, some ancient customs are still followed as well. As for popular music, Soukous and Makossa have long been beloved and reinterpreted. Though being the only African state in which Spanish is an official language, most artists sing in Fang or Bubi and sprinkle their lyrics with words in French, Spanish or English-based creole. One may also notice Congolese-style Libanga — shout-outs to local patrons — and some nods to Ndombolo, Assiko and Hiplife.
