Thru the "Sawtuha" project and Blitz The Ambassador playing quite some shows in Morocco I've had the pleasure to travel North Africa quite frequently lately and whenever possible I did some record shopping. This is a selection of some of the finds, music from the 60s and 70s from Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia. Some known some not yet. 

This is also a kick off to a new loose series of mixes by us, people we work with or people we are just friends with. Enjoy.

The men at Sole Bicycle got wind of our changing the name from Steffi Graf to Graff, and our intent to bid Steffi farewell with the release Club Classic Vol. II … and being the scholars they are, asked if we would like to release the mix as part of their fixtape series.   Of course it was an honor to be asked and we gladly obliged.  This mix tape was made to be a journey through some of our favorite tracks of the later steffi years... kind of how we would have our ideal DJ set be… long and gradually building, lots of house, little bit of techno, a crowd pleaser here and there, and a couple throwback nightcaps.  At two and half hours in length, this one should come in hand for the marathon bike rides, hot air balloon trips, or late nights with your buds :)

Here’s a short tape for the start of summer. I was filing records this past week and figured why not digitize a few before putting them back in the stacks, then slap together a new mixtape?

So here’s a 23 minute break mix with a few goofy vocal samples and accapellas thrown on top – I did it on Serato but it’s all original wax from my personal stash. For the beat-heads, hopefully there’s more surprises in here than not.

It was fun to cut it up. Maybe I’ll do a few more. Hope you enjoy.

Breaks and Snacks (mixtape)

Here is an unfinished mix I did back in 2008.  I was working on this mix while about 5,000 other 1988 mixes came out.  As a result of all the 88 mixes I scrapped this mix and it went on top of my mixes that will never be heard pile (Just added a Jay-B'z mix to the pile a few weeks ago).  In any event, I randomly came across this mix the other night and thought I'd share the 15 minutes that I did finish.

There are so many great albums out there including the 2 Virgin Ubiquities BBE put out... We could devote a whole week of radio programmes to Roy, his archive is so large… 

He is the key to all things between jazz, soul, disco and hip hop…. Thank you roy for all the music...

Roy Ayers 75th Birthday Mix

Originally written in early 2008

This mix was inspired by a R*#ts concert that I saw in February 07. While watching the concert, I remember thinking to myself that Hip Hop isn't dead, it's just growing up. Hip Hop as a culture and art form must progress and develop in order to survive and stand the test of time. The original Hip Hop generation is getting older and getting more educated. We are not too far away from the first Hip Hop president (maybe even just a few months away). The R*#ts represent the direction that Hip Hop music should be headed. I'm not saying that all acts need to be live bands. But those MC's and producers that fuse the core elements with innovation will keep the art form alive and relevant.

I've sat on this mix for a few years now.  This is just a mix I made because most D^% mixes show absolutely no depth of D*# production catalog.  Most of the mixes I've heard just focus on the post 2001 (really 1999) era of D*# production with a few better known Ch*&nic joints sprinkled here and there.  Being a SoCal native, the bulk of my introduction to hip hop came through D*# production.  If you don't know every loop, every bridge, every random sound from his D*C, N*#, E#*, Mich*#, D#&thr*w days, you just don't know D*# production.  The mix was so easy to make I feel stupid positng it (which is why it's been in the vaults for a few years).  I've also chosen to keep the mix untitled to prove the point that I didn't decide to do a D*# mix as a cheap way to garner hits/listens/downloads etc...  It's just something I felt like doing because I wasn't really working on anything else at the time.  I'm currently in the final stages of what I consider to be the Mona Lisa of mixes (at least as far as my mixes are concerned).  That mix should post in a few months.  Hopefully, this mix will hold you all over until then.

June 16th, 1971... Somewhere along the way it became "uncool" to listen to 2pac among hip hop elites. I'm not sure why, but the vanguards of rap music have never given 2pac the same critical love as other deceased rappers such as Biggie, Big L, or even Big Pun. Not that he doesn't get love (I believe he is the highest selling rap artist of all time), it just seems that the same heads who worship Biggie, Tribe, De la, and Rakim, don't have an appreciation for the musical contribution of 2pac. With that in mind, I designed this mix to make believers out of all those who are lukewarm toward 2pac. This is a 2pac mix for the snobbiest of hip hop elites. This is not a mix that will feature songs like California Love or All About U. Rather, this mix primarily consists of selections that showcase the section of 2pac's catalogue that should satisfy the finickiest of music critics. He may not have been the greatest lyricist of all time, but you can't deny that dude had a lot to say. As with all of my mixes, a lot of time and effort was put into crafting this mix. I hope you all enjoy it.
