Autumn 1992

Trevor Rockliffe - Serious Business Demo Tape - Autumn 1992

I can't remember a time without the strains of soul music drifting through our house. With both parents coming from Barbados I was brought up very much in tune with a natural party ethos that went hand in hand with a love of good music. My earliest musical memories are of Booker T and the MGs, Aretha Franklin and, of course the great Elvis, and I used to hijack my parents collection of 70's soul 45's and get the whole family grooving round the lounge! I guess the early signs were there - my passion for music combined with an over-whelming desire to entertain as many people as possible.

By 10 I had well and truly caught the bug and was spending every bit of my pocket money on soul and funk records. I got my first pair of decks (just the 2!) by the age of 15 and I started to play as many parties as I could, discovering that I could buzz off a crowd whilst funding my habit at the same time. As the 70's became the 80's I followed the musical trend from soul to disco to hip-hop but it wasn't really until I moved to Brighton in 1986 that I discovered, along with so many others, the pure thrill of acid house.

The 'Summer Of Love' was special for me in more ways than one. It was at the Sunrise rave on the outskirts of London in 1988 that I had had my biggest breakthrough yet. I was already something of a regular on the infamous M1/Orbital rave circuit but it was at Sunrise that I had the idea to hook up a third deck. At 10.30am on a hazy Sunday morning I managed to tempt 15,000 partied out ravers back onto their weary feet and kick the party back into action - it was an amazing experience- and since then my phone has not stopped ringing with offers for 'The 3 Deck Wizard'. I was fortunate enough to participate in many of the events that have gone down in history as defining moments in the history of UK club culture, such as playing the opening night at Rampling's legendary Shoom, running The Project with Oakie as well as holding a residency at Brighton's ZAP club.

With my reputation as a DJ well and truly secured I was able to turn my attentions towards producing. Initially signing to Perfecto I had my first hit in 1992 with 'I Want You' and, believe me, no one was more surprised than me when I found myself performing on Top Of The Pops when my record peaked at number 23 in the UK charts!!

Despite the fact that the follow up 'Does It Feel Good To You' also charted in the top 40, commercial success was never what I had been aiming for, it was all somewhat too far removed from the reality and buzz of setting a dance floor alight. Whilst fellow spinners such as Grooverider and Fabio moved from raves into Jungle, choosing to focus on a very UK and London orientated sound, I couldn't escape the American and European influences that had always been there whilst I was growing up. I have always been very globally minded which comes across in my choice of music, which I use to cross physical and cultural boundaries to bring people together. Essentially my heart lies with house and techno and it was for this reason that I chose to take a back seat from my impending career as a pop star and be true to myself by going underground and re-discovering my roots.

I've been working on this set on and off for over 3 years. I was constantly challenged with the tune selection. I made a 45 min mix in 2018 and loved it, kept it to myself, and then when I went to remix it I totally changed it. Anyway.. this is my '92 Happy breakbeat Mix. I actually played a lot of these tunes back in the day but I've definitely added to my 92 collection over the years. These are some of the best 92 piano tunes that I own, but there are sooooo many more OMG! That said, I'm trying to add tunes that you may not have heard me play before too to keep it interesting. This is Part 2 of a new series I'm creating to showcase some of the best of my collection in each of my early years. I started DJing in 92, but started raving in '88. Bouncy UK Rave/Piano Breakbeat '92 30 Years On Mix @148 BPM

Where to begin with Slipmatt? A founding father of hardcore and rave in the UK he is arguably one of the most definitive figures in UK dance music having helped soundtrack some of the most iconic raves and parties this country has ever seen.

From Moondance to Fantasia, Helter Skelter to Raindance, Energy to Clockwork Orange.  Slipmatt has played them all and is regarded as a figurehead of rave culture.

Very little which has come since would have happened if it were not for his commitment and boundary breaking approach to dance music in the 90's.

Slipmatt is one of the masterminds behind legendary production outfit SL2 (along with Lime and MC Jay), the visionaries responsible for the chart smashing anthems ‘On A Ragga Tip’ & ‘Way In My Brain’ which helped to define popular rave culture in the UK. This year marks thirty years since the release of 'On A Ragga Tip' - a track which remains as relevant and renowned in the present as it did at its inception.

In the present he continues to DJ and remains as crucial as ever, remodelling his traditional sound within the house music community with his 'Slip’s House' radio show on Centreforce 88.3 DAB digital radio every Wednesday from 8pm.

This mixtape takes us back to the roots of his sound, focussing on the 91-92 era and we are delighted and humbled to be able to welcome him to the series.

This live set was performed by Mr C in front of approx 2200 people on the 12th November 1994. I had heard Mr C play a few times before i booked him and although it wasn't the sound we were known for at the time, it was definitely the way Chinn and i were looking to go musically with the night. Cultural Vibes had been hammering party music for almost a year following our druggy/trippy 1st year under the net in the Warehouse. Consequently this night took everyone by surprise but for me and Chinn it felt like a welcome return to our underground roots. As you can clearly hear Mr C turned up and absolutely slammed the place, and i dont think i saw a funnier sight @ The Warehouse ever. Most people had turned up expecting Mr C the Shamen pop star and not a 2 hr lesson in Acid House. The whole building was totally fucked by the end with some very spun out people indeed. I knew exactly what to expect and i still lost the plot, levitating/falling backwards off the railings surrounding the Egg during L A Synthesis' Agraphobia (a tune he kindly left me with afterwards). For me Chinn and a lot of close friends this was the best set ever @ Cultural Vibes, and the after-party went on into Plymouth folklore. Sadly Vibes was all over before Mr C could return with friend and playing partner Murf (it's him on mic) for his second visit in Feb 05. Playing together @ their Subterrain night they went on to create a long running London classic @ Mr C's hugely successful club venture, The End. (any glitches are from the original tape and are not mistakes)

For 300 weeks, we’ve been releasing a new edition of our Mix Series every Thursday/Friday, showcasing inspiring DJs and producers from across the spectrum. 

To celebrate, Altern 8 legend, Mark Archer, has put together our 300th - a concoction of true energetic rave, old skool flavours and more recent hardcore-inspired goodness!

Having such a guest on our series is an honour; a man who has been part of influential UK dance music acts such as Bizarre Inc., Nexus 21, and a cult duo that soon became the dust mask and hazmat suit-wearing act known as Altern 8, who from 2015 included Posthuman’s Josh Doherty alongside Mark. Wearing a mask ain’t that bad after all!

All we can say is that we’re gassed as f*ck and that we’ve been playing these breakbeats over and over…what a treat - enjoy!
