"Let's start from the beginning, and for this we will have to go back to 2000, when Jazzanova released a series of mixes: Live on BBC Radio, Live in der Clubzone, Live on Wsound Radio.

These mixes were so much listened to by me that I can still sing fragments of the compilation from memory. The beauty of these mixes was not only in the obvious exclusivity of Jazzanova's musical taste, beautiful live mixing of the tracks, but also in the fact that they were not mixes in the usual way for me. It was more of a musical collage, assembled from the best, sometimes very short "pieces" of tracks. The stylistics went mostly into pre-jazzized hip-hop with sharp transitions through scratching. But the approach itself - to take the best from the track and cut off everything superfluous - has forever sunk into my soul.
This is what I wanted to bring to the Time To Love mixes.
Tell your musical lamp story by mixing only one pure thrill.

RA.1000 launches with Theo Parrish, live at fabric: a vanishingly rare club mix from the king of deep crates and impossible transitions.

There are DJ sets and then there are Theo sets. No matter how many times you've caught him in action, every time still feels like the first. Running hot, levels smoking, isolator working over time. You think you know dance music? Think again.

Parrish's debut on the RA Podcast is a milestone for the series, one we've sought for over 15 years. So it was only right that Theo led off our 1000th celebrations. Recorded live at fabric last December as part of RA's party with the London club for their 25th anniversary, this three-hour segment documents the crescendo of his eight-hour marathon. 

The Detroit legend doesn't release mixes often, and when he does, they're usually studio recordings: think NTS shows, his 100% Detroit edition of DJ-Kicks or classic tapes Body (1997) and Methods of Movement (2000). A capture of the Sound Signature boss on the dancefloor is hard to come by.

Sure, there's galvanising build-ups and crowd-pleasers, but laced throughout a Parrish beatdown are rarities designed to shock the system. In a business dominated by marketing, the vinyl master towers above thanks to a relentless hunger for lustrous melodies, moods and textures of all stripes, which he and he alone can fold into an inspiring and exhilarating joyride.

On RA.1000, blissful reggae precedes new wave disco; '80s R&B morphs into synthy techno; bleepy Chicago jack makes way for a poignant vocal ballad. It's Theo through and through. Once again, he proves that anything and everything is possible with the right records.

ELECSOUL - PAPER

This week I found myself drawn to two producers for very different reasons. Ron Carroll and Felipe Gordon. I’ve always felt deeply connected to their music, but as I listened back through their work, it hit me: they’ve actually collaborated a number of times before!

Felipe Gordon and Ron Carroll, both masters of soulful, groove-driven electronic music, have shared musical chemistry across releases like Gordon’s Hold On (Original Mix) featuring Carroll, and Carroll’s I’m Alive (Touch the Sky), which Felipe reworked in his own distinctive style. Gordon, a Colombian producer and DJ, brings a jazz-infused sensibility to house music, while Carroll a Chicago legend channels gospel roots, deep soul, and raw dancefloor energy.

I haven’t included their collaborations directly in this week’s mix. Instead, I’ve reflected on the influences and similarities that connect them. The emotion, the musicianship, and that unmistakable feeling of spirit in motion.

All my shows are recorded live to tape, with no editing. It’s never perfect, but that’s exactly how I like it. I’m grateful to have this platform to share my virtual residency on ElecSoul each week.

I’ve just recorded a full one hour vinyl mix featuring some of my favourite soulful and deep house tracks from 1993 through to 2024.

It was a real pleasure playing at Dialog Studios out in the beautiful Cotswold countryside such an incredible space. The team there are top-notch and can create virtually any look or vibe you’re after, whether you’re a band, solo artist, or a seasoned DJ like me.

Totally love the authentic nature of it all.  So glad I played records instead of CDJs, it would have been too polished sounding and seamless, and not at all organic.

So there you have it.

If you’ve got a love for meaningful 90s soulful songs and deep electronic grooves between 120–127 BPM, this one’s for you.
