Timeless Wavelength Mix [RBM006]

For this special edition of our mix series we have dug deep in to our record collections, focusing on some of the tracks that have influenced  our own sounds in the studio.
The electronic music of this era was very much in an experimental and evolutionary stage and at the time was considered to be quite futuristic, The beauty of it for us was the fact that it was so open-ended in terms of style, with no  strict adherence to specific songwriting rules but rather an attitude and spirit that combined aspects of punk and pop with a slick production sheen. A lot of this  music was directly influenced by the use of TR-808 drum machines, modular synthesizers and funk sampling and has created the templates for today's club music that is now common place on our sound systems.

80's Post Punk Mixtape

PRODUCTION NOTES:
Recorded sometime in the fall of 1987 in Mesa, AZ.
It's a bit raw as the tape has faded over the years despite my best efforts in storage. I did some mild audio correction and a "fade in/out" at the beginning and end of the recording so it wasn't so abrupt. When this set was recorded, I had only been DJing for a couple of years (almost) by this point, so it's pretty raw, with varying degrees of success: Just a somewhat green DJ with 2 turntables, a mixer, and 2 copies of some records so as to make adjustments on the fly. I think I may have recorded this to give to my girlfriend at the time: I'm not sure.
In any case, its raw and not perfect, but it's genuine. Takes me back to the nights in that bar filled with Fog, cigarette smoke and kids wearing black. Enjoy.

ADDITIONAL HISTORY:

The year was 1987 and one of my brothers introduced me to a man he used to work with named Ron Forte that did video work at a nightclub in Tempe called Surprises. This man wanted to open up a "Juice Bar" (Teen/ Non-Alcoholic Club) in Mesa. I was skeptical at first. He wanted to name it "Pulsations West" in honor of its namesake: the famed nightclub Pulsations from his home town of Philadelphia. My brother told him I was an aspiring DJ that was pretty good at beat mixing (Thanks, bro!) and we should chat.
So  - one day I meet this guy over at the old Dicks Drive In. (you locals will remember that place). This guy looked like Groucho Marx and drove a 70's-era gold convertible Corvette. I remember scratching myself on the convertible car and he said "You should sue me, and we can split the money!" At that point, I knew I should work for this joker. He had a huge record collection and was just a funny dude.

Fast forward to some time later, he opened up that "Juice Bar" over in this old ballet/dance studio off of 47 W.Main in Mesa, AZ. The rest is history.
When the place eventually closed, he personally drove me over to another Teen Club to talk to the owner/Leasor of the space that would pick up where we left off and get our crowd. He basicly sealed the deal. That space: Manikins.

But that's another story.
