I’m not religious but I have always found traveling to be a very spiritual experience. 

I’m not talking about your family vacation or 2 weeks off a year. I’m talking about raw experience, new places, the unknown and that feeling of unlimited possibility that comes with having time on your side. I get high just thinking about it.

‘Heading Out West’ is my attempt to capture that exact feeling in song. It is all about surrendering yourself completely to the excitement, danger and possibilities of being on the road. That said, in the end it is all about those two great rock n’ roll clichés - freedom and release.

I used my memories of back packing across the USA a few years back as some key inspiration. As such, the idea of “heading out west” like a real frontier man just sort of felt right.

The song is a rambling and slightly bluesy/country number that just poured out of me about a week ago. For those of you familiar with my music you’ll agree it is a very 'me' kind of sound. It starts simple enough but it builds and changes into something very different from where it started. 

Like my song ‘I’m Drifting’ I once again used a banjo – it seemed to add that frontier vibe that I was looking for. I played it in a very flat and percussive kind of way which is probably a bit unusual. There is also a bit of lap steel guitar floating around.

I won’t lie. I dig this one a lot.
