DJ Flight has been a constant throughout the many peaks and troughs of drum & bass. She's one of the genre's key chroniclers, with a real-time history of drum & bass in her archives as a radio presenter, and a level of behind the scenes involvement that spans decades.

While Flight's advocacy for equitable gender representation in drum & bass through her EQ50 collective is the most visible, it's by no means the sole initiative. Her work also extends to the Prison Radio Association—the only radio station made specifically for incarcerated people—as well as the Windrush Stories series, which focuses on the cultural history and contributions of Afro-Caribbean migrants to the UK.

Flight is also, plainly, a wicked DJ, who doesn't prefer one scene or subgenre over another—which also makes her a font of knowledge. (Her history of 2000s drum & bass is among the best genre deep dives we've ever published.) This RA Podcast is two hours of majestic, freewheeling beats that touch on every corner of drum & bass: from the minimalistic and razor-edged to ragga looseness, with a killer downtempo outro to smooth out the final landing. RA.942 is a first class journey from one of the scene's most enduring heroes. Big up Flight.

If Field Maneuvers was a spaceship, Local Group (@wearelocalgroup) would be the rocket boosters: extremely heavy, highly flammable, essential for lift-off – yet, tragically, doomed to part ways at high altitude. The twin propellants of Joe Nonlocal (@ecstasygaragedisco) and L Major (@lamjor) have played every FM since day dot, pumping the dome with the noxious fumes of British rave excellence and even releasing their own tribute to the festival’s beloved Sputnik stage (2018’s ‘Laser Dome’ EP on Ritual Poison). But after 10 years together, they’ve finally uncoupled from the FM payload – though both of them will be back at FM 2025, playing sets right next to each other (Joe Nonlocal b2b Angel D'Lite (@angeldlite) and LMajor flying solo. 

On this farewell mix, captured deep inside the Sputnik laserfog in 2023 (sadly 2024's set recording got disrupted by the powercut) smiley faces explode from rushing breakbeats, boyracer basslines swerve between diva vocalchops, fairground wurlitzers pump up the jams, and Missy Elliott sends us a voicenote after a particularly good balloon. This is the spirit of ‘92 – not as cheap nostalgia, but as an eternal code to abide by. Shades on, cig lit: everything is energy.

As their voyage comes to an end, look out for a small asteroid shower of the recent 'Quantacid' release on Dead Trax and the upcoming Maximum Airtime (that one features a remix from hardcore ledge Jerome Hill) as well as new solo music from both of them, with Joe expanding his Corporeal Face alias.

Joe offered some parting words: “Local Group are heading for different parts of the universe – at least for the time being. It’s been a journey beyond our dreams since we got the name from a book called Cosmos, reading it in a basement flat in Clapton. We’ve got to meet and play alongside heroes such as 2 Bad Mice, Mark Archer and Manix, plus too many others to name. We’ve supported Grooverider and seen what’s on Groove’s rider: a bottle of Grey Goose.

Massive gratitude to everyone who’s been behind us along the way, booked us, danced, bought and played our music. Special thanks to Wavey Garms for championing us throughout. And, of course, our eternal love to Field Maneuvers, where it all started and grew. After a power cut plunged Sputnik into darkness during our FM set last summer, it felt like the cosmos’ way of telling us to end it there too. Hardcore will never die, but we all will. Make the most of it.”

Joy Orbsion is someone we have a long and fruitful relationship with here at Dekmantel. He is, and always has been, a pure embodiment of UK dance music. His sound is steeped in English musical history (often explicitly in the form of sampled monologues) but also very much makes a new history of its own. He’s had countless underground hits from his definitive post-dubstep breakthrough ‘Hyph Mngo’ to his peak time tech tools with Boddika, and each one marks a mini reinvention of his style. What ties them all together, though, is O’Grady’s unique penchant for blending garage, bass, funky, house, techno and old school jungle into his own fresh concoctions. 

The two hour podcast he has served up here -as a perfect warm up to our festival this weekend- is split into two parts. Says the artist himself, “the first half is basically a way of showcasing producers that are doing great things at the moment and is completely made up of new, unreleased music, and the second half is basically winding things down with a load of stuff from my record collection. A come down, of sorts.” Starting with a spoken word snippet from his jungle playing uncle Ray Keith, the mix is initially atmospheric and moody, with sleek and stripped back drums and smeared synths making for a heady and intimate mood. After picking up through skewed bass patterns and skeletal techno, the second half seduces with elegiac rhythms, jazz selections and spoken word tracks as well as delicious soul sounds, reggae and stoned broken beat.  The results show exactly where Orbison is at musically, as well as offering an insight into where he has come from.

Paul Woolford’s Special Request alias has developed into so much more than the jungle and breakbeat project it started as. Proof of that comes this month with his Belief System LP, a magnum opus spread across four slabs of vinyl. The first half is a techno trip full of visceral twists and turns scattered with references to his love of pirate radio. The second half is the soundtrack to a fatalist mind movie that is dark and broody. Woolford’s mastery of sound design elevates the whole thing to a new level, and listening to it is as absorbing and complete an experience as you could wish for. 

As a DJ with many years experience under his belt, his work in the booth is just as essential. In his Dekmantel Podcast he takes us on an unpredictable roller coaster that veers from sparkly New York disco through to haunted beats, twisted electro and monstrous techno. Spin backs, face melting basslines, rave and punishing drums make it as much a party starting main room mix as a heads down let’s ‘av it marathon. It’s fun, full on and pushes and pulls you in many different directions without ever letting the energy levels dissipate.
