Maoupa Mazzocchetti colours outside the lines. In fact, those proverbial lines have been eradicated altogether. The French-born, Brussels-based composer, multi-instrumentalist and sound artist is not interested in being pigeonholed or categorised, his musical ventures are guided by an urge to subvert and challenge the structures and constructs we've become accustomed to in contemporary dance music.

His work is complex and expansive; it invites the listener to be assertive rather than passive. When it comes to releases, he's made his way to some of the cream of the crop in his area of expertise: labels like Mannequin, Knekelhuis, Dark Entries and Brothers From Different Mothers have housed his work until now. 

His most recent release, the second in a compendium of LPs titled UXY Dosing©, continues his quest to break down the constructs of contemporary dance music. An exploration of "MDM (Maximal Dance Music)", a genre coined by Mazzocchetti which is linked to the over-consumption of dextrose associated with milk, the LP obliterates genre boundaries and invites you back into his consciousness-expanding universe.

Ensemble podcast 010 by Marina Herlop, a conservatory trained composer, vocalist and pianist Marina Herlop began her career by giving a contemporary flair to compositions from Debussy and Chopin, tipping her hat to the canons of the romantic era.
The nature of our current time, amplified by social media and pop culture, has generated a concept of the artist as a winner or idol. In order to legitimize themselves, musicians are exhorted to follow ‘celebrity canons’: having a flashy image or making flashy music, being charismatic, being successful. The creative process is often seen as esoteric and associated with cryptic and vague concepts such as ‘inspiration’, ’talent’, ‘expression’ or ‘freedom’, so it seems music is created magically, in a spontaneous way. As a reaction to this phenomenon, the interview excerpts in this podcast come to remind us that the music profession still consists for a lot of us on a profound devotion. Parallelly, the tracks chosen for this podcast also resonate with this idea. This music arouses admiration and interest precisely because it doesn’t look like a desperate claim for attention but a beautiful consequence of this commitment with something pure that comes from a superior order. The popularity or circumstance in which the artist lives is something absurd in comparison to what is laying in the realm they can enter when they make music.

"I hear uon’s OUEST098 as three different behaviors of water cut into wax. 

The first track, Solaris, also comprises the record’s entire A-side—it’s oceanic. A textual motif printed on the disc’s label reads “Love is the eternal mood,” and “Solaris” sounds like the seemingly endless emotion of the sea. No axis, no locatable center, swelling, rolling—the positioning or lack of position of the one in love. Do I watch the wind knuckle the water’s surface or am I completely enveloped already? Of course, there is no cyclical course on a record’s surface that can turn eternally. The track ends after 17 minutes, and this is perhaps why uon's love, although it’s eternal, is also called a “mood”—something that sweeps over us, then, unbelievably, recedes tide-like.

“J” is choppy, white foam spitting off the shoulders of the waves—perhaps not even the humming omen of a storm coming, grey skies, but the hours before this charge. The water adopts a more forceful kinetics, salts a harder and regular stride, a confidence one might find incredibly sexy. It roils. With this cut, uon wades closer to dance-floor utility than many of their recent releases. I first came to know the artist as a DJ who, through their sequencing and sensitive mixing, completely changed the way I hear tracks I thought I knew by heart. They get floors churning. Productions such as “J” could put me there—pull my sweat and possibly tears out dancing, smutty tank-top, “wet look.”

The record’s final track is again on or in calmer liquid. Again with “Bus” there is the ambiguous position of the one in love—do I swim outside myself, or am I situated in my deepest region? The sonic palette: curdled sea slugs twisting inches away from your ear, submarine sonar pings, rain making the sea its dartboard. No doubt the water is much colder than that of “Solaris.” A tonal pad rises and falls throughout the song’s 6 minutes, like a current or riptide. It’s the last sound on uon’s record, depositing us back into silence, sand. So love may be the eternal mood here, but flux is the only mood of the eternal."
