We are lucky to have the songs of our own Jewish traditions -- they are for us to sing.  Some of us have ancestors who have been deeply involved in movements across the world for social change for generations, both as those directly affected and as allies.  We are also singing their songs. 
And.
We recognize that this can easily turn into cultural appropropriation, particularly when we do not have direct links. So, before we sing a song we have a practice of honoring where it comes from: we share the movement, the struggle, or the people who birthed this music. Singing these songs is one way of acknowledging that we’re in a long line of movements for justice. 
We continue to create new movement songs. We write new lyrics. We get inspired by old text- Jewish and non-Jewish.  We do not simply translate movement songs into Hebrew in order to connect with them. One possibility instead is to incorporate Jewish text with similar themes and vision. 
From the beginning, IfNotNow leaders have been building relationships with leaders from Cosecha, BlackLivesMatter, The Dream Defenders, and other movements through the Momentum Community where we have been creating and sharing our songs with each other. Diversity keeps our movements strong and interconnected. We understand this as an ecological system of access, ancestries, struggles and strategies for resistance. Song is part of the way we arrive in interdependent relationship. We are building a culture that is accountable, compassionate -- and vibrant as all hell. Please honor the history of each song -- learn it, share it. 
We will lift each other up.

Touring nationally for thirty years, Joanne Rand "continues to push the art pedal to the floor," NOW mixing her 15th CD of original songs, "Southern Girl." "Stories from the Inside Out," released in 2013 was recorded during her 2012 musical apprenticeship with a master in the U.S. music capital. Rand has appeared with the likes of Bonnie Raitt, Bob Weir, John Hartford, and recently earned a BFA in Music Composition. Rand’s 2010 CD release was submitted for Grammy nomination by San Francisco Recording Academy’s President.  You can't keep this woman down, her last five CDs were released in the past five consecutive years and she continues to tour the U.S. "Whatever muse inspires Rand only seems to grow stronger with time" - Eugene Weekly.
            Writing and playing music since childhood in the Deep South, Rand cut her performance teeth playing bluegrass in Alaska and spun musical magic with natives in the Amazon. She spent six formative years touring from her remote homestead in the Pacific Northwest wilderness, fully launching her career in California’s North Bay Area, where she remains revered as one of the region’s finest independent artists. A North Bay Bohemian readers’ poll voted her “Best Acoustic Band,” and calls Rand a “legendary…longtime local hero.”  In the 1990s Rand helped anchor Seattle's thriving music scene, collaborating with her songwriter brother, during his last years of life. Residing now in Arcata, CA, with her family, Rand teaches music, and continues to tour.

New Album 'FLOCK' out now.

These are strange times. Everything is different. One thing we know, for sure, is that Jane Weaver continues to metamorphise...

New album ‘Flock’ is the record that Jane always wanted to make, the most genuine version of Jane Weaver, complete with unpretentious Day-Glo pop sensibilities, wit, kindness, humour, glamour...

It features an untested new fusion of seemingly unrelated compounds fused into an eco-friendly hum; pop music for post-new-normal times. Created from elements that should never date,its pop music reinvented.

Still prevalent are the cosmic sounds but ‘Flock’ is a natural rebellion to the recent releases which sees her decidedly move away from conceptual roots in favour of writing pop music.

Produced on a complicated diet of bygone Lebanese torch songs, 1980's Russian Aerobics records and Australian Punk.

The musician’s exposure to an abundance of lost records served as a reminder that you still feel like an outsider in this world and that by overcoming fears you can achieve artistic freedom.

It’s a consciously positive vision for negative times, as is the title track, a brooding andethereal song that stop/starts, like a cool jazz breakdown playing at the end of the world café. It underlines the discordant pop vibe that permeates ‘Flock’ and concludes on ‘Solarised’, a super-catchy, totally infectious apocalypse, a radio-friendly groove for last dance lovers clinging together in an effort to save themselves before the end of the night.
