Not as interested this time as much in critical feedback. (Edit: oh go ahead and be critical if you like). I realize it's a bit repetitive. Simplistic bassline. Not even any drum fills. But I really like it as is. A lot. The harmonica sounded like it was saying "down the river". From there I started thinking of a river on fire that was sort of like the infinite corridor in the castlevania tv series on netflix. I might try to find a more representative picture. (Originally uploaded on 5/7/23. On 5/9/23 I went back and changed the high pass on bass and kick from 50hz down to 25 hz or so. And made drums a bit more coherent in general.)

This is my entry for the 171st edition of KVR's One Synth Challenge - this month every sound was made using Apricot, a free synth by nakst.

There are just 10 instances of the synth this time, and it's an experiment in timekeeping. Seven out of eight people can dance to this - are you one of them?

Made using Ableton Live 11, with no third party effects. Each track has an EQ8, Utility, Saturator (in clip mode) and Compressor. No returns. The master has EQ8, Compressor, Glue Compressor, Utility.

This month, it was nakst's "Apricot:" a hybrid subtractive synth/sampler in CLAP and FL formats. Only one instance of Apricot was used. Other usual rules apply (no samples and no commercial effects).

Tal Bassline submission for OSC 65

DAW: Reaper (yee haw)

Once the MIDIs had been created for each track ... the workflow was thus:
Each track was built by programming the synth for the sounds I needed, then the FX were added to the track chain, and the synths tweeked. Once I was happy I froze the tracks WITHOUT the fx chain. Then I used Reapers drag to pull over each fx from the synth track to the rendered audio track (thus keeping all the settings). I did this twice for each track (hence the "28" instances of TAL). Then the pairs of tracks were panned and fx tweeked to taste.

Tal Bassline  --- 28  (all tracks doubled up and layered with different pan, verb and comp - depending on which fx are on which track!)

[Now at version 3, small bits of volume automation done]

[Now at version 4, extra soloing added before and after the main solo to brighten the sound and lift it a little out from the very dense soundscape]

[Aw heck. Now at Version 5. Better dynamics now I think, wall of sound still there, but overlaid solos now thinned out and EQ'd as well]

V6, rimshots down in the mix and the end fade is longer.

V7, lots more surgical EQ ... maybe this one breathes a little more.

Notes on the sound design:

All sounds programmed from scratch as follows.

The lead organ has 4 layers. One is a tuned percussion sound to give that classic Hammond style jazzy attack.

The Bass has 3 layers, one for the string attack, another for the body sounds and another for the low resonance. 

The piano hits at 1.03 onwards are 3 layers. 

The Percussion is quite complex - the kick is 3 layers, the hats, ride and snare 2 layers each.  The tuned toms (hear them as the panned fills) are only 2 layers!

The easy one was the organ doing the chords - simple 2 layers one a basic organ sounds and another to add body.

and, oh yes, the wahwah voice is JUST one instance Digits, with verb and EQ!! Just so we are clear about modulation eh?

DoctorBob - Giving the Digit - (OSC 67 Digits)

Made for OSC 68 - Synth1

The download is a FLAC. Even a 320kbs mp3 doesn't seem to have the "bite".

All patches made from a starting point from the 10,000 presets and tweaked!!! (More so now I have RTFM!)
