Flash up your lighters, it’s time to show your appreciation! On 26th August, Crissy Criss’s last 1Xtra outing hits the airwaves. And, as the show reaches its apex, the stroke of midnight signals Create the Future has been released to online retailers, so while Crissy is on air, you can salute his work by copping it immediately.

The last decade has seen bass music, its roots firmly
established in the underground, push shoots and branches up through the streets to mainstream accept- ance, not only in the UK, but throughout the world. And undisputedly one of the most influential forces in this era of the low-end has been Crissy Criss.

There are few people who can claim to have been part of the D&B scene since childhood. He can though. Step-son to the legendary jungle pioneer Kenny Ken, he was learning to mix at age 9, playing on Kool FM at 11, taking his first steps into production at 12, and chalking up his first release at 17. Since then, as part of BBC Radio 1Xtra’s roster, he’s championed all flavours of D&B and given crucial exposure to many new artists.

But now it’s time to turn the page. Crissy Criss is leaving 1Xtra, so to celebrate his achievements, it’s only right he drops something victorious on Technique Recordings.
As the title Create the Future suggests, this track is about development. An almost deep house intro, rolling filtered piano chords around delicate stabs, is subsumed by a synthetic alarm-call and atmospherically- manipulated vocal samples as the beats and bass kick in. The sounds open and expands until a breakdown with tinges of soulful garage, before building back to an emotive climax.

This is music with emotion, euphoria and pedigree, and a highly-suitable marker for the end of Crissy Criss’s 1Xtra journey.

With every end comes the possibility of new beginnings, though. And as Create the Future lands, you know that Crissy will be busy living up to that title. So watch out, Crissy Criss has been released into the wild, so be prepared for what’s coming next.

Sam Hiscox, better known as Imba is a Bristol UK based Drum & Bass Producer/DJ to keep both eyes on. Spending his fledgeling years in the studio honing his production style by experimenting with many genres and drawing influence from a multitude of artists including Spectrasoul, Lenzman, Break, Kimyan Law, Culprate, Hybrid Minds, Technimatic and Koan Sound, his diversity of creative input is apparent in his productions.

A shimmering, evolving soundscape sets the tone for this deeply emotive 2 track release as the intro of 'Just A Phase' rolls out. A crispy clean break and progressive layers of harmonising vocals lift the track to the next level before the drop. Vocalist Leah Costello delivers a soothing yet catchy performance, and that coupled with the addition of a resonating guitar lick makes this one a real earworm.  DJs will be all over this one, it’s perfect for the mix, sitting right on the groove of 2016’s liquid revolution. 

Another immersive intro of emerging pads and lush harmonics signal the start of the heartfelt 'Departure'. Warm enveloping basslines pull you straight into the drop with a backdrop of subtle yet present pads and Imba's signature soft keys pepper the mix and paint a vivid picture without the need for a vocal. 

Perfectly applied to any situation, wether it being played out in a club, on a Hi-Fi at home or in the car or on the train, this release is a refreshing breath of real authentic Drum & Bass straight from the heart, for those who love to truly get lost in the music.

Catapulting themselves into 2017, young production pair In:Most are making waves across the Drum & Bass scene. Based on opposite sides of the globe, Josh Croft (Cambridge) & Bailey Greer (Brisbane) are living proof that music knows no bounds. Having worked together since early 2012, yet only announcing it officially in 2015, the duo are pushing out some solid material. Namely their ‘Cloudfish EP’ out on Silent Audio, and the ‘Pictures In My Mind EP’ on Goldfat. Fresh from collaborating with the likes of Logistics on ‘Sheung Wan’, the pair now offer up , a 3-track slice of soul on our own young Soulvent Records imprint.

Opener ‘I Know’ eases in smooth pianos shaded with atmospheric padding, flanked by rhythmic clicks and sweeps. All backed up with a beefy drum break and a churning bassline, this sort of silky-smooth roller is fast becoming In:Most’s calling card.

’Changes’ kicks off with a purely positive, jazz-tinged energy. We’re talking feel-good sparkles, pizzicato strings and glossy toplines. Coupled with a screw-face bass and innovative vocal chops, it’s a prime example of their nostalgic yet forward-thinking sound. 

To round off the cut, their ’I Can’t Do VIP’ runs a more than welcome half-time reimagining of the original from last years’ Soul Sessions Vol. 2. With its playful, plucky arpeggiated synth, lustrously soft pads and rumbling, warm low-end, there’s more than an enough to reinvigorate the original release: our first offering from the duo, not even half a year old! 

With an impressive string of releases in only 5 months, these are two producers who show no signs of slowing down over the course of the year.

Imba’s story started when he began pouring over the many genres electronic dance music had to offer. It was here he found a home within drum & bass, having perfected his craft over the past two years and taking influence from a multitude of definitive artists, from Technimatic to Koan Sound. His diversity and creative draw comes from a vast musical knowledge, a knowledge he created whilst meticulously expanding his record collection, as well as his own back catalogue with every stellar cut he’s followed from his first release. 

Already being pedestalled by the scene’s most exciting independent imprints, Imba returns to Good Karma Music for a four-track EP that’ll highlight his impressive musicality. With his first notable output on the Perth based label, the ‘Infinite EP’ is certainly a return to form. Its complexly designed landscapes and stunning textures pull you into the deep, liquid vibes he rules supreme over. A stark testament to his ingenious production capabilities and viability as an upcoming drum & bass artist, he manages to capture the soul of more intimate productions whilst catering to the heads. 

Opening track ‘Feel You’ draws your synapsis in with pitched up synths and floating, ethereal samples. Metallic breaks add a foreboding overture to its carefully layered intro, before the track cascades into scuttling percussion and escalating tones. A fresh take on the otherwise delicate sounds of liquid, Imba demonstrates why he’s been pushed into the forefront over recent years. Title-track ‘Infinite’ follows suit, a collaboration between Leah Costello and Octo Pi. With beautifully distorted vocals drifting between the intricately manufactured mix, each pad takes you higher and higher into its moody breakdowns. Once again, it’s a play on the traditional, uplifting liquid record.

Finally, ‘Starlight’ and ‘Dynasty’ close the already stunning collection of tracks. Whilst ‘Starlight’ is an upbeat, percussive roller which features littered note arpeggios and a drivingly winding bassline, ‘Dynasty’ brings producer Tremah on board for its combination of wooden instrumentals and explosive bass. Together, they further solidify Imba’s presence within the circuit. By adding yet another two strikingly honed records which prove a timelessness in his production standard.
