Live set recorded on December 7th 2013. No editing or overdubbing, all sounds live from the lunchbox modular consisting of DPO, Optomix, 2 Functions and several helper tiles. Sequencing provided by Little Midi Machine from iPad, effects from Boss DD5 and Akai Headrush. Live looped vocals and field recordings involved as well. 

This was a practice for a show later that night at the Warp Zone here in Peoria, IL . Feel free to download the set and enjoy on your commute, while surfing the web etc. best with headphones or speakers, as dictated by the nature of sine wave bass.

The song 'It's OK' was inspired by a series of difficult events that occurred during the year after Jon completed his tour on BBDLP1, the last Big Black Delta record. This included losing his father to a stroke, finding that all of his gear was stolen, and losing one of his best friends to cancer. Since going public with some of this news, Bates has been inundated with incredible kindness and thoughtful support from friends, musicians, fans and strangers alike. This song is a thank you. A gesture of gratitude to everyone who has been kind — and to the universe itself.

It's Ok

About 12 years ago I was wandering around the suburbs of Hiroshima, alone on a very hot, very humid summer day.  I saw a temple on a hill and wanted to climb up to see it but I couldn't find a path or road to get up there.  I decided to climb up the hill through the bamboo forest, trail or not.  The hill was very steep and slippery with leaves.  I never made it to the top.  For whatever reason I still remember this experience vividly.

I used my modular synthesizer to recreate the sounds of the forest, layering a variety of patches.  All of the sounds you hear are from the synthesizer (even the sound of traffic in the distance was made using white noise and a lowpass filter), no other recordings have been used.

Spent Saturday at Knobcon 2015! Saw so many instruments I'd only read about. My favorite part was the "Demo Derby"– a room with a handful of "curated systems" where anybody could come in and play with them. I spent a lot of time there as it was my first time playing commercial modular synths!

I loved the WMD system and the Bastl system, but was probably most intrigued by the Verbos System (a "performance system" I believe: http://www.analoguehaven.com/verboselectronics/performancesystem/ although it didn't have a sequencer). It sounded absolutely fantastic and I discovered the usefulness of envelope generators that spit out a trigger when they are done (you can loop them!!). That's what I was exploring when I recorded this little track direct to my edirol recorder.

I certainly can't afford any of this gear anytime soon, but it sure is inspiring to make some sounds with this stuff. The next envelope generators I build will most certainly include "done" triggers so they can be looped. So cool.

Simple demonstration of Argos Bleak's output rotation mode. CV source is 1 channel of Stillson Hammer playing random unquantized steps. Argos Bleak quantizes to dorian scale, delays some of the outputs(new feature in firmware 1.3), and sends CV to 3 oscillators (Hertz Donut, Piston Honda, Polivoks VCG.)
