Owner of techno labels Proper NYC and 212 productions, Steve began his musical life as a drummer at the age of 10 and in the late 80's was playing drums and programming with the Chicago Wax Trax! band Sister Machine Gun. After a stint with them he realized that pure electronic music had far more potential to me than the confines of being a back-up musician and he began composing minimalistic but hard electronic tracks on a small cassette 4 track recorder with a simple analog set-up on the floor of his apartment on 18th Street. Steve's first solo record 'Datacloud' was released on Richie Hawtin's Probe label in 1993 and things just snowballed from there. 

'I recorded for many other labels including Novamute, Profile, Fax, Djax, Musicman and Synewave to name a few but my proudest moment was when I started my own label Proper NYC and became my own boss. Early on I had always wanted to be different, not be just another DJ, so instead of spinning vinyl I performed live PA's bringing my studio on tour and improvising new sets every night. I truly felt like things could blow up every time i took the stage (and they did sometimes!) but looking back this added very much excitement to the performances (at least for me :-)'

Steve had the pleasure of playing for crowds all over the world from Europe to Asia at some of the biggest clubs and festivals including I Love Techno, Fuse, Omen, Cocoon, Tresor, Mayday, Love Parade, 10 Days of Techno, Mt. Fuji to name a few. Several years ago he got the chance to create a project together with my hero Patrick Codenys from Front 242 under the guise 'Gaiden'. He has also worked on projects together with Ken Ishii, Damon Wild, Pete Namlook and remixed the likes of Gary Numan, DJ Rush, Hardfloor, to name a few. 

'These days I still produce albeit a slower output than the glory days of techno. I also produce sample libraries for Big Fish Audio (my 'Locked Groove' project was selected as a top 10 by Future Music Magazine). I am interested in anything that expands the theory and execution of electronic music and media. I love circuit bending as much as I love analog synthesis.'

For its 6th release, Berlin-based Klangkuenstler returns to his Outworld imprint with the Weltschmerz EP – an ode to a world in turmoil, prophesying that there's light at the end of a pitch-black tunnel. For there's a fire of passion burning brightly within the depth of these two monstrous new tracks. Make no mistake, this is brutal, floor-shaking techno, yet, despite the sheer force, Klangkuenstler captures the emotional essence of our Zeitgeist, shape-shifting moods between raging anger, deep-blue melancholia and glimpses of hope.
The EP's title-track 'Weltschmerz' kicks off mercilessly at the light-speed-tempo Klangkuenstler has become synonymous with. As a muscular kick thuds below slashing hats and rust-covered atmospherics, a venomous lead snakes through this airtight framework, unfolding into a moment of unadulterated ecstasy. 'Untergang', meanwhile, bursts of pure energy in tired times, thundering violently towards a bittersweet peak of warehouse-sized euphoria. To put it in a nutshell: Klangkuenstler rings in the end and we're going out with a bang.
Though cooked-up for carnage, it's Klangkuenslter's intuition for existentialist contrasts that let the Weltschmerz EP transcend its design purpose to grow into something altogether bigger – touching body, mind and soul alike. The outside world may have ground to halt, but Outworld continues to move.

Bio.:
Producing pure, minimalist analogue-minded techno in the vein of early Plastikman and Joey Beltram (even though his career began as a drummer with the industrial label Wax Trax), Steve Stoll has recorded for Nova Mute, Probe, DJax, Delirium, Synewave and his own Proper NYC label. Raised in Brooklyn, Stoll listened to hip-hop and disco as a child, then joined the Army straight out of high-school. He served for five years, including a period in the Gulf War when he plotted bomb runs by satellite. After being released, Stoll shifted around: he played drums for the industrial group Sister Machine Gun, studied jazz and began recording straight-edged techno for Big Apple labels like 212 Productions and Damon Wild's Synewave.

Stoll debuted for Sm:)e Recordings with the 1995 album Pacemaker. The following year brought another album, Zero Divide (recorded as the Operator) and an EP for Nova Mute (as the Blunted Boy Wonder). After he reverted back to Steve Stoll, Damn Analog Technology followed in 1997 and The Blunted Boy Wonder one year later. He stopped because of parenthood but now picked up the gear again.

Nina Kraviz launches her трип (pronounced ‘trip’) label with a double-EP compilation entitled ’The Deviant Octopus’, featuring a pair of brand new productions from Kraviz alongside material from Terrence Dixon, emerging talent Parrish Smith & Bjarki, and veteran producers Exos & Steve Stoll.

The idea for трип has been gestating for some time with Nina Kraviz, an avid crate-digger and frequenter of numerous second-hand record stores, who has long wanted to begin a label of her own which would build on some of the principles of her beloved 90s techno labels in terms of attitude and aesthetics, whilst looking for forward-thinking modern productions that reflect her core tastes for idiosyncratic electronic music.

The art and title of 'The Deviant Octopus' comes from a single-sentence scenario dreamt up by Kraviz: “Without a moment's notice an Octopus appeared and devoured everyone in sight”. Supplied with this scenario, artist Tombo rendered his own unique visualization for the artwork that adorns the release sleeve. It's Kraviz's own nod to the labels that inspire her and grab her attention while digging through second hand records, the best of which were imbued with the unique personality of the people behind them. This extends to the sound Kraviz intends for трип: dusky, divergent and trippy music to stimulate brains, dreams and fantasies.

In this respect ‘The Deviant Octopus’ is a perfect introduction: Kraviz herself is represented on the tracklist by two new tracks that take up the mantle of last year’s Mr Jones EP by returning to the vocal-flecked hypnotic techno that marked out that release. Complimenting those are two new cuts from a true master of hallucinatory off-kilter techno, Terrence Dixon in his Population One guise.

Joining them will be a pair of names from the techno pantheon who have been huge influences on Kraviz: with a career that’s taken in releases on Synewave, Trax, Novamute and Richie Hawtin’s early-90s Probe Records, Steve Stoll has been mining his own variant on techno and acid minimalism for over twenty years, heading up the Proper NYC label and releasing under various pseudonyms, such as Cobalt, of which Kraviz has been a long-term fan. His counterintuitively titled ‘Pop Song’ sits alongside a 13-minute 90s techno excursion from Reykjavik’s Exos - the only previously-released cut (originally appearing on Thule Records sub-label Plast Trax in 1998) - together illustrating that трип will also live up to its name in the geographical sense: showcasing great music from historically vibrant electronic music scenes outside of the usual Detroit-Berlin axis.

With Kraviz looking to build a small repertory of talent around трип, this first release also makes room for two newer names: Bjarki is an Icelandic talent to keep a firm eye on, who drew Kraviz’s attention in a chance meeting after a gig at Copenhagen’s Culturebox club, after which he passed her a collection of mind-bendingly odd demos; while Parrish Smith is a talented Netherlands-based producer whose short yet impactful sketch ‘1.0 / 8.0 Afrika Genocide’ brings the second 12” to a bewitching close.

All tracks on ‘The Deviant Octopus’ will feature on Nina Kraviz’s DJ Kicks compilation, out in January 2015 on !K7 Records.

Back at our mammoth Stay True Scotland broadcast earlier this month, one track came real close to bringing The Caves' roof down during Nina Kraviz's powerhouse headline set. "I Wanna Go Bang" very nearly executed its titular statement – well, if the song was more about wrecking balls and less about...oh, never mind.

The vocals that stalk the track, so wholly devoid of humanity, rub up against razor-sharp claps and serious bounce in the subs. It's weighty warehouse techno of the highest order, set to devastate dark basements and big tents alike throughout the year. Simply put: Icelandic producer Bjarki has delivered a bomb.

Grip the physical via трип from July 15th onwards.

On 'Hexenmeister', the third release on Berlin's high-octane Outworld imprint, head warlock Klangkuenstler conjures the witches for a ball around their bubbling cauldron, adding yet another new facet to his raw signature soundscape.
With it's relentlessly powerful kick and acidic riff, title track 'Hexenmeister' is pure, peak-focused body music, while it's twisted witchcraft vocal and brooding synth-line add positively deranged magic to its meaty pulse. 'Die Sonne Bebt' then whips the floor into oblivion by way of its killer drum programming and grinding rave signals, before 'Strom der Welt' lifts-off with the perfect bounce of rhythm 'til we're drawn back into a maelstrom of powerful electrical currents. Pulling out all the stops for the grand finale, Klangkuenstler concludes OW003 with 'Der Letzte Tanz': part old- school drum'n'bass banger, part transcendental closing-weapon, it marks an end point that feels as if an entirely new dimension just opened itself in the Outworld.
