Some of you may have noticed in the last four years that I have put up original songs - which I usually leave free for download - on this page. It's been some time since I've gone out of my way to polish a piece up, lyrics and all, but thinking about doing that again dries my throat right out; getting from point A to point hey-we-actually-have-a-song-here is one hell of a process and one I have not been able to confidently immerse myself in. But here I have some instrumental pieces that have collected in the dark corners of my laptop - things I would begin out of a small imagined phrase or guitar riff, a motif on my parents' piano on a Sunday afternoon. After some brooding, gestating (where I'm up still at 3 in the morning with rings around my eyes) the piece would end up as one of these eight.

With this release of demo tracks I'm also saying I'm moving forward. There are only so many of these things that I can accumulate, wondering if they're any good or worth working with. It becomes this never ending process of tinkering, listening (a week later), shelving, rediscovering, rinse, wash, repeat. After a time, there's only so much you can keep trying to do with one idea, and here's where I've let the music rest - let the doubting stop.

“In Songs of Awe and Wonder, Andrew Webb-Mitchell has created a stunning set of symphonic songs on a grand scale. The music is full of passion and heroism, with glorious harmony and beautiful textures. The orchestration is beautifully detailed and the vocal writing creates a soaring line that carries the listener right through the vast canvas of the cycle. The work is dedicated to Mahler but, although the scale of the work is comparable to a Mahlerian song cycle, the music is in no way derivative and Andrew Webb-Mitchell has his own unique style and sound-world.”

Kites Over Malvern pays tribute to the English composer Edward Elgar, depicting him pursuing his passion for flying kites over the Malvern Hills. As he stands on the hillside, the kites are reeling in the cosmic symphony that he feels all around. He watches the kites soaring skywards and holds himself in readiness to transcribe this enigmatic artistry.

One of the pre-eminent musical figures of his time, Elgar bridged the nineteenth and twentieth centuries as the finest English composer since the days of Handel and Purcell. Elgar's most fruitful period was the first decade of the twentieth century, during which he wrote some of his noblest, most expressive music, including the Symphony No. 1 in A flat major, Op. 55 (1907-1908), and the Violin Concerto in B minor, Op. 61 (1909-1910). His best-known works from this period, however, are the first four of his Pomp and Circumstance Marches (1901-1907); the first of these, subtitled "Land of Hope and Glory," became an unofficial second national anthem for the British Empire.

Kites Over Malvern offers a glimpse of the man in his earlier years before public recognition, drawing inspiration from his love of the open countryside and consolation for his artistic isolation.
