The mad King

A dark humor themed boogie woogie about a certain goth cult spinster from the Victorian era, who was accused of brutally murdering her father and stepmother with a hatchet. It wasn’t proven in court, so she went free. 

The lyrics contain references to details of the case, leaving open whether Lizzie was indeed the murderer, but also on whether she might or might not have been a lesbian. The latter was a rumour derived from the 19th century misogynistic believe that a refined woman of middle-class upbringing wouldn’t be capable of such a heinous act, unless of course (sigh…) the 32 year old spinster secretly was an angry lesbian (an imagery which was later adopted as a trope in modern pop-culture). Perhaps Lizzie simply wasn’t interested in marriage, or she did not have any luck in finding love, or she found the ideal of virtuous Victorian womanhood oppressive, or she was kept on a short leash by her parents, or perhaps she fell for women after all. Who knows? 

And why did Lizzie (according to the police reports) not show any emotions when she was confronted with her dead parents? Is it indeed ‘proof’ she was the murderer, as the police liked to think? Or was she simply in shock and did the whole situation feel unreal to her? I’d personally like to think Lizzie might have been on the spectrum (therefore lacking the emotional response bystanders would expect), but since I’m apparently drawn to neurodiverse folks, I might be projecting my own preferences on her as well.

In the end, we’ll never know the true story of Lizzie Borden, which is all part of the intrigue. Nevertheless, Dorian went on a virtual date with dressed-in-black Lizzie 132 years after the murders took place. It was a joy to write this song about her while reading her background story.

Dorian Urac is inspired by 80s new wave, alternative rock, nostalgic lofi recordings and cheesy outdated music from the 50s and 60s. 

Dorian's first and only gig was in 2007, at a closed playground, where a shady intergalactic convention of evil overlords took place. (True story, obviously they were not quite right in the head.) Ever since, Dorian decided to remain a cozy stay-at-home rock star.
