In this episode of ‘ask dorothy’ I share one client’s journey to repair the damage of not having healthy boundaries in place with the solution of building those boundaries – now.

If your needs and requests have not being heard nor respected by others; it’s time to get clear about what is okay and what you no longer will continue.  Setting boundaries and then upholding them begins with a change in how you think and your willingness to honor yourself first.

If you are unhappy with how others treat you – if you have felt a lack of care and respect in the value that others show you; and if others consistently make demands of you; of your time, help, efforts, and also love – you may be listening because you realize its time to set your boundaries and to better uphold what you decide for how you want to exist in your life; and the parameters for your relationships.

Welcome back to this sacred journey into the chakras.

The chakra system originated in India between 1500 and 500 BC – more than four thousand years ago in the ancient literature of the Vedas. Evidence of the chakras, is also found in the Upanishads, the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, and perhaps most thoroughly in the sixteenth century by an Indian yogi in a text called the Sat-Chakra-Nirupana.

The chakra system was taught orally by the Indo-European people (also called the Aryan people). It was traditionally considered an Eastern philosophy until New Age authors, like Anodea Judith and others, resonated with this wisdom and began writing about the chakras.

If you’ve been joining me in this series, I hope that you’ve allowed yourself to explore the wisdom of these ancient energy centers; these spinning sacred wheels of life. They are believed to hold energetic space within us; and which link areas of the body and psyche with associated metaphysical realms. Within each episode in this series, I describe how each chakra affects our psychology, and our emotions and behaviours as human beings.

Here we dive into your Anahata, your heart center. Since the heart chakra is the middle point in a system of seven centers, balance, together with love and relationship) are the essential principles at this level of integration. 

This implies both internal balance between various aspects of ourselves (mind and body, persona and shadow, masculine and feminine), as well as between ourselves and the world around us (for example: work and play, giving and receiving, socializing and being alone). 

It is important to continue to find and live in equilibrium, for without balance within ourselves it is difficult, if not impossible, to achieve healthy and long-lasting love relationships. The basic right of the heart chakra is to love and to be loved.

I AM ~ A Daily Mantra Of Self-Love

This guided practice of Pratyahara is the purposeful directing the mind and the senses inward ~ so that one can internalize consciousness and realize the true 'Self.'

Pratyahara consists of two Sanskrit words, prati and ahara.
Prati means away or withdrawal and ahara means food. Here, ahara means anything that the body and mind consume.


Therefore in the context of yoga, it is the process of withdrawing from the objects that nourish the sense organs. The goal of pratyahara is to withdraw from the external objects and to go inward.


Pratyahara is one of the Eight Limbs of Yoga laid out by mystic, sage, and philosopher Patanjali more than 1,500 years ago in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.

The Sutras collect spiritual wisdom into an organized guide for living a yogic life.

The First Meditation I Teach:  Experience it to Change Your State to Calm and Relaxed

This meditation with the gentle sound of rain is sacred as it is 
a reminder of how to witness the present; to witness all that is sacred and divine in your life; and of how to draw the experience of the present into you - to be one with it.

This meditation is a beautiful reminder to live the present moment; to return to the present when you are far away from it - in thoughts, in worry, in anticipation of future moments or in the comparison of your life to that of another. The Power of Love:  As love, we are limitless.  Love overpowers any fear, any self doubt, any need to withhold our true feelings.

The most important thing that you can do, that each one of us can do - is to know what it needed to live as love.  

This is what you are - when you are living as your authentic self.  This is what you must do.   ~ Begin each day from a state of love.  

You do this by remembering this state, holding the power of this love as what you are.

A gentle experiential meditation to remind you of the presence of your heart and to help you engage with your breath and the experience of inner peace.  Hold presence here for a time as you observe with gentle awareness - all things.  Let your breath be a source of ever-present wonder as you witness it flowing into and out from your heart centre.  Notice the energy of your heart as you breathe with mindfulness.  What does this energy feel like?  Will you allow what healing is needed?

I began studying yoga nidra meditations some time ago after experiencing them for myself and feeling a deep sense of inner calm and stillness that I had not experienced in a very long time.  Yoga nidra is a little-known ancient meditation technique explained as transformational sleep.   It evokes within you brainwave states similar to those in sleep, where the biology of your body is able to disengage from thoughts.

After a time in these conscious sleep states, I wake feeling deeply relaxed and at peace.  I enjoy taking a Yoga Nidra break during my workday for some gentle guided practice that I know is offering healing beyond what I am even aware of. 

I wanted to create some of my own Yoga Nidra Meditations to enjoy hearing the sound of my own voice as I experience this highly regenerative meditative state in which one can restore and rejuvenate the body, heal and recover from illness and re-wire our brain for greater mental and emotional balance and resiliency.

Since most seated forms of meditation can be challenging; meditation for many beginners and for students in general, can be more about the effort or the result rather than the experience of the technique.  In Yoga Nidra, the technique itself is composed of a series of body, breath, and awareness techniques designed to effortlessly guide you into a state of complete non-doing.

Yoga Nidra For Deep Relaxation And Healing | with Dorothy Ratusny

In this episode I want to remind you of the power that you hold to choose for yourself the right and best relationship, and how you can stay clear of relationships that are damaging and abusive.

I also wish to illustrate how living with abuse, perpetuates a cycle of dependency and the eradicating of one's self-worth and sense of self; and I will share the story of my client 'Beth', and the four strategies to prevent you from finding yourself in an abusive relationship and enable you to leave.

TRUTH SERUM:  There are many forms of abuse. Abuse is, by definition, the mistreatment of another; whether intentional or as a facet of one's consistent actions that one may not be self-aware of.

A-HA MOMENTS:  Abuse in the traditional variant forms that we categorize as physical, emotional, and psychological all originate with one's thoughts and beliefs; that is what one tells one's self and justifies in being discriminating, hurtful, and disrespectful towards another, and how one's misguided intentions can lead into a situation and a relationship that is both damaging and abusive.

PRACTICAL WISDOM:  We know that relationships that are unhealthy and abusive are also complex and complicated. We stay in these relationships for different reasons; whether because we have convinced ourselves that there is something of benefit to us in staying; or we anticipate the enormous effort it will take to execute our decision to leave. We stay because we tell our self that the "relationship is really not that bad"; that maybe "we deserve how we are being mistreated"; and in some cases, we may tell ourselves "we don't care."

Self-Love: A Meditation To Heal Your Life - with Dorothy Ratusny

These are the words spoken to offer you a clean slate; to remind you that for anything that you have ever said or done, for whatever has happened, for anything that you continue to blame yourself for – that you are forgiven.
What if this were possible?
Would it change how you feel about yourself?
Would you be able to let go of; to shed some or perhaps all of what has caused you to feel guilty, alone, sad, sorrowful; remorse or regret?

Can complete forgiveness directed towards yourself for every unkind or hurtful word or action, for every envious, angry, critical thought that you’ve held; be a positive step – or even the solution to break free of what holds you back?

I recently tried this experience for myself as an experiment to witness what rises up immediately to the notion that I am forgiven; that complete forgiveness is possible. It is entirely feasible and in fact it is a long awaited secret to healing yourself and feeling whole.

This is what we all intrinsically seek. We all want to feel whole and this is why we go in search of it; whether consciously or subconsciously.

The Illumination Of All Things  | The WISDOM Podcast | S2 E31

Here I offer valuable strategies and recommendations to implement for each of these three best practices; so that you will have the secrets to never feel lonely again; because the goal is to enjoy being alone with yourself and to not feel lonely.

Throughout this time of a global pandemic, there have been many illuminating ‘aha’ revelations that you, that I, that we all have come to witness. One resounding and common ‘voice’ that I have heard echoed by so many is the feeling of loneliness that has been exacerbated by the critical state of lock down; now something that we are again experiencing at the time of writing this, and in many parts of the world; coupled with the accumulated months of continued social distancing and self-isolating. But does loneliness have to be our existence?

If you are someone who has been suffering with loneliness; if you do not like being alone with yourself, I invite you to think about the reasons why. Do you feel loneliness even as you live with others? Have you considered what the psychological and emotional impact is of prolonged loneliness and isolation, and what can you do to eradicate this?

To instead feel connected; to have social contact that is meaningful and nurturing, and to discover and know the joy in the time in which you are alone, because being with yourself has the propensity to be what you look forward to as much as the social connections and the meaningful relationships you have with others.
