A.Spell have found a trio where each musician complements the other perfectly. The band comprises of Vocalist and Accordeon player, Nadja Stoller, Bass Clarinet player and electro wizard, Jan Galega Brönnimann and the Percussionist, Tabla and Didgeridoo player Ronan Skillen from Cape Town, South Africa.

With the release of their debut album „Where The Strange Creatures Live“, A.Spell bring music where lyrically and structurally the songs are given special contexts within which they unfold in their own spacial feeling. Unfamiliar combinations of instruments and rich variety are specialities that are endlessly intriguing. Bass Clarinet and Tabla combined with playful electronics and a provocative Accordeon are the foundation for an otherworldly Voice soaring high above, reminding us of mystical beings, secrets behind mountains of snow and a forgotten pair of shoes. „Where The Strange Creatures Live“ is a journey through surreal dreamworlds.

Stand outs in the indie-rap haven of Minnesota, No Bird Sing combines the talents of emcee Joe Horton, drummer/producer Graham O'Brien, and guitarist/producer Robert Mulrennan. With Definition Sickness, the trio has maintained the integrity of their live-band roots while exploring a more produced sound that ranges from stark minimalism to lush expansiveness. 

The first single, “DON’T THINK”, is a brooding track where Horton shares vocal duties with SFR label head SAGE FRANCIS. Other guests on the album include FIX cohorts Crescent Moon (Kill the Vultures) and Kristoff Krane, as well as Sadistik, Chastity Brown, James Diers (Halloween, Alaska), Aby Wolf, Adam Svec and Molly Dean.

NBS released their eponymous debut to critical acclaim in 2009. Their 2011 follow-up, "Theft of the Commons", along with the US tour dates that followed, served to expand their loyal, burgeoning fanbase across the Midwest and beyond. 

Their SFR debut,  Definition Sickness, offers a meditative commentary on modern life, owing much to leftist political theorists like Howard Zinn as well as Eastern-leaning philosophers like Alan Watts and Lao Tzu. Musically the dark, transcendent instrumentation of the record creates a rich and varied soundscape that will immediately entice fans of multiple genres. Repeat listeners will be rewarded by both the layered lyrical themes and the ear candy that’s provided by the nuanced sonic compositions. 

"If you took away the vocals, you'd never know it was hip hop," admits drummer/producer Graham O'Brien. "We're just investigating the relationship between hip hop and other genres—taking the spoken, rhythmic word and putting it in other places."  

"That's what creativity is," vocalist Horton says. "It's coming to this point where you don't know exactly what you're doing and having to figure out what to do. The second you're not doing that, you're just rehashing old shit."

# Ever since sales figures for physical records started to dwindle there has been a debate surrounding the future of the album format. Some people claimed that download practices of the average music fan would make the album as we know it redundant. There were already obituaries for the album as an art-form being published and those who declared that they only listen to single tracks on their iPod anyway. This served as a reminder that the LP was originally nothing more than a collection of a particular artists recent singles anyway. Whether 13&God were thinking about any of this when they started work on their second album „own your ghost“ or not is a different question. Although one might suppose so. For although „own your ghost“ in no way overpowering, it is so diverse that one sometimes has the feeling that one is listening to a compilation. Whoever opens themselves to this album is letting themselves in for an emotional rolercoaster of uncertain terminus. Everything seems to be possible on this record: deathly sad, enchanting indie hymns. Sharp stinging raps by Sharp stinging raps by Doseone with his distinctive voice. Understated grooves, Krautrock tracks, melancholy, lightness... The lyrics and song titles are another strength the album and one that binds it together. For on „own your ghost“ 13&God are dealing with life's big topics: growing old, death and mortality. In other words they are concerned with issues that pop music has traditionally left behind. Lyrics and song titles such as can't get the eat out of death, death major, old age, unyoung, to end, belong down etc. are like a read thread through pretty much all the songs. And the front cover depicts a weightless skeleton floating through the air. 13&God were founded in 2004 under adventurous circumstances by members of the bands Themselves (Adam Doseone Drucker, Jeffrey Jel Logan, Dax Pierson, Jordan Dalrymple) und The Notwist (Markus and Micha Acher, Martin Gretschmann). According to the legend the idea for the project was born on the highway near the Canadian border. A burning laptop and a stuffed fox apparently played central roles in the event. This transcontinental supergroup brings together curiosity, openness and ability. The Notwists signature is unmistakable – the absolute blueprint for experimental indie pop. The same goes for the Anticon band Themselves. That such different musicians time and again continue to surprise their listeners is to their highest credit. „own your ghost“ gives us a sense of how 13&God manage to stay afloat on a see of possibilities, rather than becoming shipwrecked on it.

Swan Lake is the musical group featuring celebrated songwriter-mystics Daniel Bejar (of Destroyer and New Pornographers), Spencer Krug (of Sunset Rubdown and Wolf Parade) and Carey Mercer (of Frog Eyes and Blackout Beach).

Together they recorded Enemy Mine, their nine-song second album, in Victoria, British Columbia, in early 2008, a little more than a year after the release of their well-received debut collaboration, Beast Moans, also on Jagjaguwar.

While their debut album was a beautifully-weaved mash-up of their disparate song-writing styles, often with layer upon layer of various melodies and stylistics thrown into a collaborative cauldron to magical, and at times discordant effect, their second album Enemy Mine reflects a more stripped-down, more deliberate approach to collaboration. It's as if they really tried to just make nice songs together. To quote Krug, "There's architecture here." Not that the lyric is about collaboration--it fits nicely though.

It is the band's contention that this is the first known use of a "court painting" as a record cover used in popular music. As a result of this enthusiasm, the band had planned on calling the album Before the Law, a beloved Kafka parable and a reference to this court painting. However, the band is tired of being tagged as "literary", so they dubbed the record Enemy Mine, a beloved movie from Bejar's youth, and a good metaphor for collaboration.

Quick bit from me: A few months ago I was asked to be a part of the "New Republic Mixtape" in honor of Imanos's signing with Republic records. I went through the republic roster trying to find the right fit for what I had envisioned I would submit for the mixtape, and when I came across the Florence acapella I was immediately brought back in time, to when I first hear the incredible original on the radio. The debut album by Women was recorded over 4 months on ghetto blasters and old tape machines in Chad VanGaalen's basement, an outdoor culvert and a crawl space. Sometimes light and spacious, at other times eerie and dense with an ominous weight, this self titled album touches upon Velvet Underground, Swell Maps or This Heat while not really having any obvious precursors - a lo-fi masterpiece cloaked in layers of vibrato and guitar wash.

Noisy and claustrophobic songs smash through junkyard trash brawls while others lift and soar across the landscape of 50's-informed pop; a contradiction and an enigma, the debut album by Women will find its way onto summertime pool break-in boombox mixes and the turntables of record store devotees.
Women is Patrick Flegel, Matthew Flegel, Michael Wallace and Christopher Reimer, and the four young men live in Calgary, Canada.
