HCR 08172025:

Trump has misunderstood the nature of power in a democracy at home, too. Rather than building domestic coalitions to support the government, he is overseeing the takeover of the government by a radical minority that seems to think the way to build power is for the government to attack its own people.

The administration’s defunding of scientific research, medical care, environmental protection, food safety and security, and emergency management all threaten Americans’ health, safety, and security. Its attacks on history and education, as well as its firing of women and racial and gender minorities, seem designed to drive wedges among Americans. Its incarceration and disappearing of undocumented migrants both creates an “other” for Trump loyalists to hate and provides a warning of what could happen to the regime’s opponents.

Now, under the guise of fighting crime, the administration has quite literally turned guns on the American people.

The Urge

This set of Variations takes the number five as a structural and thematic cornerstone - five
performers, five core pitches in the main theme, and an underlying sense of mathematical
proportion inspired by the Fibonacci sequence. The primary theme is a roguish, folk-like
melody with a dance rhythm, playful syncopation, and four defining ‘stomping’ crotchets.
Through the series of variations, this motif is reshaped through the use of chromaticism,
dissonance and contrasting moods including scherzo, misterioso, giocoso, doleroso, with the
finale agitato. The subtitle Circus reflects the work’s mischievous unpredictability and the
slightly sinister energy that builds towards a villainous finale.

Seventeen year-old Eärendil ​(in Sun-Year 520-521) is about ready to do the initial shakedowns of Vingilótë ​to make sure it doesn't fall apart in the middle of the harbor (that would be embarrassing...) but is having second thoughts about this whole savior of the Free Peoples idea. Círdan ​says 'if you want to dip out and run away that's your absolute right. We won't be best pleased but you are a free individual." (Knowing sagely that he will almost certainly change his mind). The young fellow goes out and has a daydream among the surrounding fields slaying bumblebees /various insects. Essentially the same premise as the 1933 poem except in this rationale both it and Eärendillinwë​​ are now about Eärendil ​, just at different stages of life.

Errantry Just Doesn't Last
