On several occasions, throughout various compositions of mine, I’ve emphasized how a melody or theme was based on something I wrote long ago, during my teenage years.
In this instance, the main theme is probably one of the very first things I ever composed—likely my first 'Eureka' moment, when I first gained some clarity about my musical gifts. Needless to say, this melody holds immense personal significance.
After all this time, I’ve finally decided to properly honor it by writing a set of variations.

PROGRAM NOTE
For many years, my wife Victoria and her FAB5 quintet (string quartet and percussion), have entertained thousands of people at numerous performance spaces and travel hubs in New York City, including Moynihan Train Hall, Oculus World Trade Center, Javits Center, and Chelsea Market. Having seen many of their shows, especially those at travel hubs, there's a certain tension and release you experience watching people wait anxiously for their trains, and then the release they feel when they are finally on their way. I've had these experiences myself, so I wanted to create two pieces that emulate these feelings.

Wound Up/Unwind consists of two contrasting pieces for string quartet and percussion. The first, Wound Up, for string quartet and cajón, imitates the feeling of being worried, anxious, and frustrated, especially while waiting to board a train. The second, Unwind, for string quartet and handpan, is calm and soothing, perhaps emulating the satisfying feeling of relaxing in a quiet seat as the train leaves the station. Both pieces can be performed independently and in any order.

Wound Up/Unwind is written for and commissioned by the FAB5 quintet with support from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.

It's maybe messed up a little by the MixCraft 10.6 global effect i chose at the very last minute with like 20 minutes to go: but just approach it like "We're in the late 70's at a Jarre concert in France and we're way at the farthest worst seating in the venue and theres crappy echo on everything. LFG!"  Approached in that way and now after a few hearings I am starting to be more forgiving of it.

Carefully done timing fix to a pretty good early Synth track from near the end of the Hexa album in August 2023, appropriately during the wildfire season but hearkening back to the days in 2020 when we weren't sure if some of the fires during that contentious year were arson or activists or both.

Track Art has 3 overlays:
1) the original which is a real image of the 2020 wildfires somewhere like a MSM photo
2) an imagining of an intelligence community situation map showing which fires were really set on purpose or not (a "top secret" NORAD like map with a general looking like Kiefer Sutherland in "24" nonsense)
3) a nod to the fact that Yellow Face is Gollum's name for the sun, so a TA 3017 evoking image of the orcs around him and they don't care because they know Sauron released him
