HNYPOT 189: The Black Madonna for Deviants 2014

Honey Soundsystem tried so long to get a mix from venerable LA turned SF turned LA underground queen-pin JENILUV that we thought she'd blue ball us into gay-ternity. Since day one we have been equally as enamored as fearful of her talent and repertoire and this mix leaves us without doubts. Her roots in the San Francisco house music scene runs back to her days in the early 00's doing Fistfight (with rebel rouser club royal Jenny Young), Deep Shit (with Charlotte the Baroness), and DHP (Deep House Project). These days you can find her pushing it all over Los Angeles at her Making Shapes / JACK undergrounds or at the people lucky enough to snag her for a set at their nights. 

As always, this mix was recorded in something all black - potentially denim, potentially distressed, potentially that cost nothing to her but a fortune to someone else 20 years ago. You better work.

San Francisco still breeds talent, the kind that not only pushes its rich history of cutting edge dance sounds forward, but the kind that are willing to pay their respects to those that came before. Mozhgan has been doing just that. With her stylized approach to dark discotheque-ing, this San Francisco based artist has quickly stormed our favorite dancefloors across the city with her mystical synthesizer heavy sounds and resiliently optimistic black-heart. Her previous effort for the Honey Potcast spread like fire and became one of the most listened to mixes we have had the pleasure to release. For her sophomore effort, Moz pulls out her ceremonial techno knife and impales listeners with 50 minutes of intensity. Collaborations are formed any which way. It could be an accidental night of creative bliss that brings two artists into alliance or even an unforeseen emergency. For us it was a slow ride of chance musical encounters that formed the Honey beehive. One of the most magical artistic bonds though comes from another place, the unifying element of romance. People are often scared to call it as it is for fear it will stigmatize the art-form, but the masses can't get enough of a creative power-couple. Honey can't get enough either, and we jumped at the chance to book a DJ-duo who calls for one king size bed in their rider. That said, we aren't one for cheap gimmicks (ok that might be a white lie), the spark of a good collaboration or b2b is hard to fake. So it might have taken us a second to warm up to the idea that Lovefingers & Heidi Lawden were as good a DJ pair as they are solo acts. That being said, a couple of months ago we got the pleasure of witnessing them rock L.A. dancers in a DTLA warehouse... it was absolute next-level.

So how sweet it is that we get to present to you the FIRST studio mix the duo has presented together. A two hour long journey inspired by what these two think will make Honey Soundsystem fans move to, including more than a few deep crate pulls, a signature element of their sets.

Honey Soundsystem is an American creative collective that has become hugely influential in the decade since they formed. As DJs both solo and as a team, the San Fran foursome has more than made its mark with an eclectic sound that draws on the diverse backgrounds of the musicians, performers and designers involved. They also host their own parties—famed for fantastic art installations as well as carefully curated headliners from all across the musical spectrum—and run plenty of labels between them, including HNYTRX and most famously Dark Entries, which has poured many attention on Patrick Cowley with a series of resurrected releases.

Very much setting their own agenda, then, the group does just the same with their two hour mix for us. It is a fresh offering that rolls through a bouncing selection of well polished house and techno. Clean and tinged with a stylish sense of retro-futurism throughout, there are nods to darker synth wave sounds and colourful disco vibes that will keep you coming back for more.

As Variance moves ever closer to the 20th release, it at these times we have to think of the limited capacity of releases left in her catalogue. As the owner of the label i can guarantee our fans and followers will not be disappointed with the release schedule. Not one Variance release is wasted on mediocre music, cutting edge and thoughtful is our status quo, weather we go back to the days of "Keepsakes - Ever So Merry LP" or even our initial Various Artist EP "Introducing". To think I would have even been saying we are nearing the end, I would of laughed and said we are only just beginning, and yes we are, as a cultural project and influence on the techno scene that we hope will resound throughout the years, but that may be just hopeless optimism. Regardless of this thought, the current EP that we bring you hails from the London Scene, Rico Casazza is a talented and diverse electronic musician, based in London. Having produced music for over 10 years, he has established a solid musical identity, based around his live performance and beautifully crafted tracks, with releases on labels such as Soma, we welcome him onto Variance with two immensely creative originals "Groove Powa" & " Martello". On Remix duties is a recent emerging artist, Rommek who has shown promising developments in his sound, as well as carving his way into the current techno scene. His extensive interest in sound design is embedded within the atmospheric, dynamic and textured tracks he produces. With multiple releases on Blueprint the man is just getting started, and shows no signs of letting up, the remix really shows why this man is getting the praise from every angle, every bit of it deserved, superb sound creation, excellent remix. Then welcoming back Scenedrone yet again, with another odd one, remixing "Groove Powa", upping the bpms, bringing the sub to the drone level and jamming for 7 mins, I guess he can call that a remix?, but seriously, an all round solid EP with something for everyone, lovers of analogue, broken beat, experimental, straight 4 on the floor techno, this EP has got you covered. Don't be afraid to partake.

“During gigs at that time he’d insert harsh crackles and even slightly unplug the jacks to create this uncomfortable buzz "just to clear out the audience, who were expecting a easy listening", he'd say.”

Biogen’s a different kind of musician, always travelling the road less trodden. All laws broken - no chords, no build-ups and no traditional drum patterns. Instead Biogen offers listeners fragmented shreddings, constant irritations, glitches, imbalance—and enough creative ideas to supply a whole battalion of electronic musicians. His works are full of contrast. Occasionally soft and mellow - like a cloud in trousers - Biogen would call that “sofatrance”. Other times the music’s harsh and uncompromising with uncomfortable, irrational beats and glitches - “Weirdcore” - a vast uncharted territory. Some might be tempted to connect the contrast and contradictions in his music to his long battle with manic-depressive disorder. But the disparity in his music is its strength, confounding and delighting the listener.

It’s five years since Biogen passed away, but his influence is keenly felt among Icelandic electronic musicians. In the early ‘90s, Sigurbjörn “Bjössi” Þorgrímsson was a pioneer of the modern electronic scene as a member of the old skool hardcore band Ajax, who for a short time counted Goldie as vocalist, and cemented his reputation for pushing the limits under his Biogen pseudonym. His musical creations weren’t made to serve the past or the present, but the future.

His creativity and freedom from tradition have seen Biogen gathering appreciation as an artist with the passing of time, and are hand in hand with the concept of трип. The artwork by Tombo is inspired by the idea of eternity and reverence after death.  Nina compiled the tracks much like other album journeys on трип -  “I was in the car driving in the middle of nowhere in Iceland when I heard Biogen's music for the first time. Dramatic weather conditions outside probably influenced that instant emotional connection that I had with his music. Later navigating through a large archive of his recordings it took me some time until the album took form. I picked the most idiosyncratic cuts that show his creative approach most brightly. Some of them are short cuts ending obnoxiously with a lot of temper and others gorgeous atmospheric narratives - so deep and haunting that it feels like they are not familiar with a notion of time and dissolve slowly into the eternity. It's been an honour and felt exciting to have complied his work, a responsibility I feel keenly, and I hope he would like his music together in this album.”

Biogen’s friend the Icelandic musician Ruxpin (Jonas Gudmundsson) who has worked to collect together Biogen’s musical legacy through his DAT recordings and hard drives, and kindly granted Nina access to the files, provided much of the text for the press release. Following the album release of ‘Halogen Continues’, a further album of Biogen’s ambient and experimental works will be released on GALAXIID later this year.

Rising Dutch talent Deniro (aka Reynier Hooft van Huijsduijnen) returns to трип with a double EP of original works. The Tape Records member previously appeared on the label as part of the concept albums.

‘Mendoza’ is an 8-track quest into the spheres of polarity and tension. Anxious distortions jitter in controlled spaces, angular melodies disfigure warm tones and frenetic cross rhythms flutter through minimalist forms. Contrasting messages are weaved together with precision to facilitate a dialogue where dancefloor function and cerebral stimulation interact.

The rumble of runout kinks on car tires knocks Coop awake to find himself veering at 65 mph on the 101 going south... For an Angelino, this isn’t quite as shocking as you would think, he merely adjusts the wheel and notches the music up to buy him another 20 minutes of consciousness. Cooper much more prefers the rhythm of cement cracks on skate wheels to what he just heard. Although, that doesn’t mean he can’t hang with a good autobahnger, he just cut his teeth on the pedestrian side of the street before making it to those licensed required roads. You don’t fall asleep on a half-pipe. The lip of his board, sitting upright in the backseat winks at him through the rear-view... “Wait, am I still high?” He's driving home, alone. There were some options for company, but after being at the venue for 18 hours you lose that taste to afterparty. There really isn’t much left to celebrate, sleep is now your reward, as long as it doesn’t kill you or anyone else on the drive home. "Wait, did I grab my E&S? Shit!" The phone brightness is like a strobe effect on the car interior, he has to shoulder through texts of “where you at bro?” to get to his sound guy. The song that comes on unnecessarily tightens the stress of this menial task... There is already a message waiting for him saying: “Amazing night tonight dude, DJs were all super happy, I will bring your mixer by tomorrow - she is safe.” The music goes up one more notch. We are awake now.

@wonderstories 21   heads  to  Italy  where  we  find  a  duo  by  the  name  of  @Concretmusic   aka   Italo-Mexican   musician   Diego   Angelico Escobar and producer Q-pha. Known  for  their  all  night   sets   at   Burning   Man   as   part   of   the   Mayan   Warrior  collective, the   twosome   has   channeled   their   their   inspiration   from   the   desert   into   their   prowess   in   the   studio.   Together,   they submit   a   couple   of   ethereal,   stripped-back   and   driving   techno   tracks   that   compliment   each   other   so   well   they   appear to   be   brother   and   sister   from   the   same   session.

PREMIERE: Autumns - You're A Right Useless Cunt Aren't You [Touch Sensitive]

The sound of someone slamming a door startles my hand just as I was going to draw on my right eyebrow. Interruptions NEVER happen doing my first side, but fate will have it applying the twin is ALWAYS an issue. It never gets any easier does it? The more times you do it, the quicker you get, the more confident the stroke, that split second before you put the needle to the record, time always stops. It's in this psychic space, the moment before the liquid liner tip hits those freshly opened pores that everything can fall apart. And guess what? Today I am not gonna do it. The pencil just loomed there, my face falsely lit younger by my vanity mirror. I look into my own eyes, caught in time. I lean back, the sound of Casio RZ-1 snares filling me with courage to do something crazy. The first line is never expected to be perfect, it doesn't have to conform. Unbalanced? Maybe. It doesn't have to speak to anyone and seems to hold greater power alone than with a partner. Besides, some days this is warpaint, nothing else. These streets might be full of people playing a part they didn't memorize the lines for, but not me. I am out here, headphones on, scars and blush, hyphenating names to match my transmutations. Yesterday was a slight curl on both ends, like the sharp tip of a decorative blade. Yesterday, I could have drawn blood if I needed to. Today I just say a one sided fuck you.

This week at the hive we bring Michigan native Jesse Siminski, aka HEARTTHROB to set your loins on fire with a special LIVE performance!  Jesse uses his productions to explore the intersection where tradition and innovation cross as much as aesthetics and concepts. Where the ideal is function and entertainment as well as experimentation and emotion. Jesse now lives in Berlin  where he has become an integral part of Richie Hawtin's Minus label family and aesthetic. We are excited to see how he turns out the dance floor at Honey in a more intimate setting as he is usually lighting dance floors on fire at festivals and clubs across the globe with recent appearances at London's Fabric and Berlin's Panorama Bar!

BIO
Jesse Siminski, aka HEARTTHROB was born in 1976 in Northern Michigan. Through his interest in minimal techno while living in New York in 1999 he was introduced to fellow NY residents Magda and Troy Pierce with whom he would later become label mates on the legendary Minus label. Jesse now lives in Berlin and is working full-time on music production and live performance.
