One of the aspects that made Dekmantel Festival so memorable that didn't make it into our subsequent review was the numerous conversations with performers at the festival in shared transit back to our hotel. Amidst conversations on Oslo taxi drivers with Prins Thomas and Gerd Janson and an exchange with Mount Kimbie's lighting engineer which rarely stayed on one subject for more than a minute, we were lucky enough to share some time with Mick Wills. Fresh from playing the Boiler Room stage, the Stuttgart-based DJ and producer revealed himself to be one of the nicest selectors currently operating and was kind enough to place in our hands the latest edition of his long-running Demo Mix series.

Back in London, with the benefit of a clear head we realised how well suited to our tastes this CD was, and indeed the Demo Mix series as a whole, and some polite enquiries regarding Wills interest in contributing to our podcast series was made. Instead of a studio mix, Wills offered up the chance to publish a live recording made during one of his DJ sets on the US West Coast earlier this summer. Clocking in at over 100 minutes, the performance at California festival Sunset Campout captures Wills in his element in a manner that a living room mix could not and it's easy to see why he's compared to the likes of Traxx and Ron Morelli in terms of fearless selecting.

Speaking to Richard Brophy for a Separate Mind column published earlier this year, Wills freely admitted it's taken some time for him to achieve this status. "With pleasure also comes pain - It took me almost 25 years to become the DJ that I am. There is so much good music that should be rediscovered and you have to listen to a lot of stuff until you find something that is suitable for you." That approach is fully reflected in a mix that swings through decades of music without pause, and contains a healthy dose of the producer's own self styled Cuts.

Despite being on vacation, Wills was kind enough to answer a round of accompanying questions we sent his way, revealing some personal memories of the '90s basement parties he ran in Stuttgart (and Guy Tavares' skills as a breakfast chef), the thinking behind his prolific edits and his future plans. So gals, for anyone who hasn’t visibly or audibly understood already, 2023 was not my year.

Several of my closest relationships changed in ways I desperately resisted and tried to control;  and in doing so, broke myself, my heart, and the depth of those connections.

It’s not all bad though, those relationships will mend, and these immense mistakes and overwhelming heartbreak on my part have also led to incredible healing and self love.

Some of these healing practices include:

 a threesome on new years 
- followed by - 
45 minutes of uncontrollable sobbing, alone, in the lab dark room while having to LITERALLY SWAT AWAY emotionally uninterested hands
- to then -
being fully and lovingly held by old and new friends and lovers @robert and @mohi @vinzenz

Another is (again) sobbing while listening to Deepak Chopras 7 spiritual pillars of success ❤️‍🩹 followed by railing my brains out with my favorite dildo “Her” and closing the ceremony with a 30 minute meditation.

Both are highly recommended; my self help book “healing from the inside“ will be launched in 2025 (should I?!??)

It’s incredible how being held by others and yourself in such vulnerable states can have such a stunning vibrational shift.

So, here’s a mix that somehow captures the immensity of heartbreak, longing for both what was and what could be, healing shame, hilarious drama, undying love, and the endlessly rediscovered joy for life that is my current and somewhat omnipresent self; desperately holding onto and actively letting go of - everything - with overwhelming emotion, trust, fear, and gratitude.

After a brief hiatus we're back with the 9th Tape by the one they call Otik - 3024 recording artist extraordinaire responsible for the magnificent Cosmosis album as well as the recent EP Cloud Runner.

3024: Otik, can you describe your mix in a single sentence?

"An ethereal and drum heavy journey between 160 and 170bpm, which includes old and new inspirations for my recent ‘Cloud Runner’ EP on 3024."

3024: What DJ inspires you at the moment / has inspired you throughout the years and why?

"I’ve actually talked about this recently, but I’ve always been in awe of Midland’s sets. The way he can read a crowd and create heart stopping moments on the spot with ease has really inspired me to become a better DJ."

3024: What are you working on / what have you got forthcoming?

"I’m currently finishing up two records for the same label, I can’t say who yet but I’m really happy with how they sound. The music focuses a bit more on the dance floor, 4x4 rhythms and sits within the 135-140pm range, which I haven’t experimented with for a while."

Since Josh can't make it to our Sunset + Honey Soundsystem: New Years Eve 2013 party he wanted to share a live mix recorded off the board at Honey Soundsystem on Sunday November 18, 2012 offering a glimpse into what he would have played. Moving to San Francisco in 2006, Josh fell into the disco revival with Honey Soundsystem and secured a weekly show on West Add Radio called Slave To The Rhythm. In 2009 he launched Dark Entries Records, a label aimed at restoring underground 80s music as well as contemporary bands referencing those analog sounds.
