Chasing The Light

Long ago, two races ruled over Earth. HUMANS and MONSTERS.
After war broke out between them, the humans banished the monsters underground with a magic spell.
However, a human child, brave and determined, befriended monsterkind and destroyed mankind's Barrier.
And the Underground went empty.

Well...not quite.

Much LONGER ago, THREE races ruled over Earth. HUMANS, MONSTERS, and the PROTOTHERS.
While they once lived in harmony, the Protothers were deemed by both ancient humans and monsters to be too dangerous for the world above.
And so, they were entombed deep within the Earth, so deep that ancient man believed they could never escape.

MT. EBOTT 202X

Ancient man could not account for a volatile power plant being built within the mountain by monsters.
A power plant that, when left unattended, could easily overheat and detonate.
Such an explosion, were it to happen, would be so strong that it would shake the earth to its core.
This would awaken the mighty Protothers from their thousand-year slumber, and reignite their thirst for revenge.
But why would the monsters ever leave such a powerful tool unattended?
Unless...the underground went empty...
