Marvin passed away a few years ago 
Having outgrown pop music at a young age 
Marvin grew -up to become an influential economist... 
But back then, I'm afraid he took the 'prancy' cue 
From my "galloping" up-stoke rhythm guitar 
I think hearing the full 'Tail' section
Takes the song to another place
With special thanks to #peternoah
Who became & still is a remarkably talented television writer/producer  
But back in 1972, my former New Rochelle, neighborhood music buddy 
Playing some very cool #guitar & #mandolin parts on "Sweethearts"  
I'm playing #acousticguitar & #slideguitar 
& often singing bkgd vocals with Peter
Along with Marvin's remarkably melodic bass parts & velvet voice 
We sounded pretty damn good together 
PS: Joni was the 'Sweetheart of the Radio' 
I loved hearing "Carrie get out your cane" 
On my VW Bug's AM Radio ...
I'd literally pull over & car dance

"LIVE" in 1978, at the 'a la carte' cafe Hollywood, Ca.
Back In 1974, I took this to a music publisher 
Hoping to get it "covered" 
I purposely wrote an uptempo, feel-good, song
And tried to keep my self-conscious, personal diary stuff, out of it...
But I look at the lyrics now 
And to me it looks like 
I get personal by line 4
When I start whining about 'the love I'm due' 
And as the song progresses... 
The directive... 'keep it simple' becomes a joke
"Do You Ever Fall In Love Or Do You Just Like To Dance? 
So, Indeed - 4 years later, I played it 'live'
In a short set - It was my idea of R&B
It showed off my guitar chops 
Such as they were
But above all... it was honest
And always meant for me...

Here we have a 66-Year-old-me, in 2016
Singing a song I wrote at age 16, in 1966

This song struck me as odd
A 16 year-old's take on 'growing-up'
As an older person - it's laughable
But it's also... 
A songwriter discovering & re-recording
An early building block song... a half-century later

One of the more inescapably ironic aspects
Of growing-up in the US in the 60s
Was that you had to be 21 to Vote
But only 18 to die for your country
