The day the concept for this song came to me I was wearing a poppy outside of the month of November, sometime around June I think. A relative asked me why I was wearing it, they said that other people were going to think I was stupid. I said, "So, I'm not allowed to acknowledge and mourn fallen soldiers at any other point in the year?" This conversation triggered a variety of other examples in my head, of days and times designated to acknowledge, mourn, and celebrate, only to be swept back under a rug for a year. These designated days DO serve a purpose and DO have value, but what does limiting ourselves to one day a year really accomplish? Do they appease the infringed upon oppressed peoples for a brief moment to keep them dormant and unrebellious? Does this spark a flame of change in one's heart that lasts a lifetime? That's up to each of us to choose, I suppose.

Movements such as BLM and LGBTQ2S+ are born out of real pain, real struggle, and real desperation for change. They are so much more than the simple recognition of equality of human lives and the value of our differences. However, movements can simultaneously create division. These movements feel necessary for change, and (subjectively positive) change is always the objective of these movements, but as our voices grow louder, so too do those of the opposition, and in many cases, the hateful and ignorant. Additionally, their emergence can spawn/breed disingenuous snakes who aim to capitalize off of, divert, or sabotage the movements. It's difficult to know the best way to make the positive changes kind and innocent humans seek in this world. How to we form these bridges between duality? I am always open and seeking these answers. I know that it requires an understanding of both sides.

I know wearing a poppy outside of November feels controversial to some. I know some people may get upset seeing a poppy worn outside the designated time period. I recognize both sides of this, and I think intention is key. I think it should be ok to wear a poppy with the intention of acknowledging its symbolism. I think it should be ok to acknowledge, mourn, and celebrate EVERY day of the year. I understand the fear and concern that if it were to be something that is worn frivolously, it may lose its meaning and impact altogether. For me, it doesn't.

These days and time periods that exist to acknowledge their respective subject matters as a nation are AND to GIVE meaning to these symbols are both necessary and valuable. They are important to ensure that the meaning doesn't become lost.

My father told me that he saw former Avalanche goalie and NHL legend Tommy Salo wearing a poppy on his suit on the bench sometime in April or May, and this made me very happy. Up until that point, I thought I was the only one that I have seen performing such an action. His reasons for doing so may be personal, or may be related to making a statement similar to mine.
