Martín Prechtel is an author, painter, musician and educator. Raised on a Pueblo Indian reservation in New Mexico, Prechtel traveled to Guatemala and made his home in the village of Santiago Atitlán, where he was trained in the Tzutujil shamanic tradition. Charlie: Why has racism been so dominant in our life? What is it about it —

Toni: It's about feeling good.

Charlie: You need to feel better; that you are better than someone —

If you can only be tall because somebody is on their knees, then you have a serious problem. But don't you understand that the people who do this thing - who practice racism - are bereft. There is something distorted about the psyche. It's a huge waste, and it's a corruption, and a distortion. It's like it's a profound neurosis that nobody examines for what it is. It feels crazy. It IS crazy.

How do you feel?

But when you take it away - if I take your racism away from you - there you are all strung out, and all you've got is your little self. And what is That? What Are You Without Racism? Are you any good? Are you still strong? You still smart? You still like yourself?

How do you feel?

Charlie: And the advice is to come to grips with your own fears.

Toni: Of course. Your own fears. Your own history. And what do you need? What do you need this for?

Indigenous Resistance has just launched a new full length 12-track cd IR25 Dubversive. This album has tracks "Ivere...The Land," "Luana," and "Sacred Power Dr Das Ragga Mix" all featuring indigenous performers from the South Pacific, most notably from the Solomon Islands.

The roots reggae track "Luana" is sung totally in an indigenous language from the Solomon's and features singers Tohununo and Dublikkle One in a song dedicated to all children whose rights are being disrespected. 

"Ivere..the land" is about environmental devastation and is a collaboration between a US-based singer of black, indigenous and European ancestry, ChristianeD  and Olovotu, an indigenous composer and musician from the south pacific. Ace producer Soy Sos takes indigenous  instruments and beats recorded by Olovotu and adds his own personal touch to them to create a swirling dance floor groove that mixes chants with Christiane D mezmerising lyrics and vocal styling. The track "Sacred Power Dr Das Ragga Mix" features vocals from Solomon Islands performer Tohununo alongside traditional singing from indigenous people in Canada within a reggae ragga riddim created by the founder and bassist of Asian Dub Foundation, Dr Das. "This Land Is Not For Sale..." is about Atenco, a classic land-rights struggle. For some time, IR had been aware of the siege of Atenco and had been following the news through its direct and underground channels. When Asian Dub Foundation contacted us about working on a collaboration around this issue, it made perfect sense to us. Land rights are the center of many indigenous struggles and IR has done tracks & grafitti projects related to this matter. With tracks on recent IR releases, we have hoped to illuminate the independence movement in West Papua, the The Free West Papua Movement (OPM), the plight of the Krikati people of Brasil, or the Minga Indigenia of Colombia. This new collaboration was created through the internet with musical mixes, speech fragments, and ideas flying back and forward in the digital domain. IR's network of dubversive members working in shadows across the Americas from Peru to Colombia, made their contributions by editing, transcribing, translating and recordings. These were relayed via the net to ADF in the UK. 

This is the 25th release on the IR label which over the last 6 years has done numerous collaborations with indigenous performers from the South Pacific doing collaborations solely through the internet which linked musicians like ADF and Adrian Sherwood with performers in the South Pacific. In fact the first 7-inch vinyl, IR2, released by IR was a track for the Free West Papua movement.
