Drift 28 is perhaps the furthest we've had from club sounds so far and comes from Swiss experimental producer Simon Grab. The co-founder of ganzerplatz sound studios has been an active musician in a wide range of contexts, with a strong punk attitude, always drawing from his roots in dub and noise. As a composer and sound artist, he produces music & sound design for feature films, documentaries, theatre and radio. In live performances and installations Simon Grab uses the venue as an acoustic playground which leads to a truly organic and inimatble approach to his music which caught me compltely off-guard the first time I heard it.

In his recent work, he focuses on reduction, and the peculiarity of self-referential systems. The album 'Anthropocene Panic' (sound-space Records London 2020) follows his recent LP 'Posthuman Species' and the EP 'Extinction' on -OUS records based in Zurich. His 'Diamonds EP' in collaboration with Togolese rapper Yao Bobby and Asian Dub Foundation’s Dhangsha released on Bristol’s LavaLava Records, and has been chosen as one of the Albums of the year 2019 by the online magazine The Quietus. It is truly a brilliant EP and turned my idea of what music can be completely on its head - if you are into unusual or different sounding music then I urge you to go and listen to it!

For his mix, Simon brings some of his own productions which explore rhythmic and pulsating noise before showcasing some of his favourite tracks from genres including noise, ambient and more. The mix twists and turns through deep and experimental soundscapes with whirling bleeps and crackles stamped throughout. Industrial frequencies jump and jitter for the entire hour - this is not mere background music, rather something to be actively listened to and enjoyed.

After a long hiatus, a few side projects and a full cover redesign, we finally return to the DRIFT mix series for episode 34. This one's a special one, with Edinburgh-based rising producer, record cutter and DJ 'The Last Days of Pompeii' taking control. Entitled 'Sound in Motion', he creates a vibrant collage of his favourite soundtrack, soundscapes, monologues and dialogues from cinema and television. With genres spanning ambient, modern classical and with the occasional indie throw back the mix reimagines soundtrack scores and movie scenes. Included below is the track/watch list which I encourage you to check out and do some further watching/listening. The Last Days of Pompeii's deep knowledge of film and visual media comes through as he blends memorable title sequences and deep cuts from foreign films with excerpts and monologues to create a truly immersive one hour listening experience. DRIFT 034: The Last Days of Pompeii

DRIFT 035: Ecilant

Continuing the DRIFT series in style, episode 36 comes in hot in the form of a longer form mix from Gary. Well versed in blending bass heavy club tracks, he takes a step back to share some of his favourite chilled tracks with us over the course of 90 minutes. During this time, he steers through a truly varied range of music spanning the downtempo range, from blissful electronica, through hip hop instrumentals and vocals, to percussive and emotive tracks from all corners of the globe. Despite the range of genres and style, the mix has a steady flow, the expertly curated tracks are overlayed expertly and the show stands testament to Gary's ability as both a selector and a DJ.

DRIFT 036: Gary

For episode 37, we're delighted to shine the spotlight on talented, Northampton-based DJ, Moose. With residencies on London stations Mode and Voices, he regularly fills the airwaves with forward thinking and exciting uk club sounds, focussing on leftfield music from garage to jungle. Alongside this, he is a skilled producer and boasts a string of excellent releases over the last few years including recent gems on labels Solitude and Profound Sound. 

Stepping back slightly from his usual style for this mix, he sticks to the genres he knows well but explores the more chilled out end of the spectrum, with choice selections from artists such as Om Unit and Yoofee. His aim for his contribution to the series was to touch on a Sunday afternoon feeling, using tunes he’s always had but never found an opportunity to play through normal channels such as club and radio. In his own words, not getting to play them as much genuinely improved the mix as it was a lot more fun to mix & was super excited putting the tracklist together, being something different to scheduled programming. This perfectly mirrors the DRIFT philosophy and we're absolutely delighted to be able to share it with you on a Sunday afternoon!

It’s been 5 years since “VISA”, Sasu Ripatti’s latest release under his iconic Vladislav Delay moniker. Time of the study, of exploration and reconstruction, a time in which his sound, his methods, and practice have never ceased to evolve. It is now time for a new release which he titled Rakka, and it only makes sense for it to find a home on Cosmo Rhythmatic.

Ripatti makes it very clear that Rakka is not a ‘nature recording’, though it is inspired by the time he spent in the wilderness above arctic circle and tree lines, and the feelings and thoughts that traversed him while there. The music on the album is thus directly inspired by the arctic tundra: the elemental struggle to survive or thrive, the living creatures’ fight for existence. The raw, undefined, uncontrolled and uncorrupted power that exists within it.

Ripatti remakes these values into music, in monumental yet humble forms. Reductionist though not minimal, setting each part to prove its meaning, stripped from the meaninglessness of hooks and melodies. Sounds feel like carved off the flesh, leaving the bones bare. Beats emerge as ripples, as the motion of isolated forces, thwarting with the icy textures and backgrounds and trembling with strenuous energy.

A truly extreme ecosystem of sound, unleashed in the album as much as in the new Vladislav Delay live set, visually given life by Ripatti’s wife, artist Antye Greie-Ripatti (AGF).

A companion and a friend, Undveld guides through a path of piercing heights and desolate, barren plains. Every peak of emotional distortion seems physical, each pulled string heartfelt and raw. The young Lithuanian artist has amassed an extensive discography of experimental electronic work released on offworldcolonies, Perfect Aesthetics, static motion including others, his talent in production marked by deeply sensitive compositions and dynamic structures. It is safe to assume that there is much discovery to be made on the artistic and personal journey with Undveld.
