Ice_Eyes ‘Age of Collectivity’ STRP Festival 2021 x Post Neon

Radio Benska is a show focused on Eastern Europe and the US Midwest. It operates at the peripheries of cultural power, celebrating artist who survive their environments.

This month’s episode is fully dedicated to @rapidantics (https://rapidantics.bandcamp.com/). There's something brewing in Moscow. Lovingly draped around the label ПИР(https://peer.moscow/), artists like @uzhok, @moapillar, @sozorieone, @uruncia, @funkshn, @ccntrr and @wulffluw94 chart new perspectives on familiar sounds. Familiar In the way that dreams are familiar: when oily waves freeze into valleys and shiver into peaks. 

The label's third release, Rapid Antics, is mysteriously effacing. His rhythms don't shake, they helicopter. A thought I have while listening, so common it's become a refrain, is: "how does this work?" So, it is an honor to hear what inspires Rapid Antics. The mix is introduced with some sounds I recorded in LA.

The 15th release of katharsis is the EP “Otra Vida” by Serbian artist Cuban Chamber of Commerce. Spanning four tracks, the EP portrays the gloomiest corners of your subconscious emotional landscape by blending ghostly pads and eerie sound effects with a deep reverberating bass. But even though the atmosphere is filled with tension and has a high chance of provoking goosebumps, the EP has a mysteriously hopeful and embracing quality to it.

“Otra Vida” is quite a deviation from the artist’s former releases, as his earlier works are more bass-driven and dancefloor-oriented. With two successful releases under his belt, respectively on Molten Moods and his own label kepasaparadoks, the artist now seeks to explore new sonic territories by putting emphasis on textures, atmosphere and field recordings instead of complex high-tempo drum patterns. As hinted in the title, “Otra Vida” carries a message of the different and unknown, which is well carried through to the listener by the ghostly mood of the EP.

DRIFT returns with the 32nd episode from Berlin-based Loft Garten. As co-founder of the exciting new experimental label NIA Records, they find themselves situated at the centre of the fast-paced electronic music scene in the German capital and, alongside co-founders Collo and Delfine, have come up with one of my favourite releases of the year so far. Intentions Vol 1 is a compilation of experimental tracks filled with echoing hyper-melancholia, fragmented orchestral pieces and yearning ambient alongside the occasional scattered and wapred club sound. I have used multiple songs from this release in my own mixes and radio shows, including Loft Garten's own track let's meet by the canal. It's with great pleasure that I welcome them to the series for DRIFT 032!

The mix is a sublime blend of experimental tracks with wistful, textured ambient seamlessly transitioning into distant percusive elements, a variety of sounds which paint an overall picture of longing and time away. It features many of my favourite artists and is a nod to all those who have been pushing the experimental exlectronic scene into uncharted waters over the past few years!
