Disquiet Junto Project 0527: Magic Number (3 of 3)

The Assignment: Complete an asynchronous trio begun by two other musicians.

Step 1: This week’s Disquiet Junto project is the third in a sequence that encourages and rewards asynchronous collaboration. This week you will be adding music to a pre-existing track, which you will source from the previous week’s Junto project (disquiet.com/0526). Note that you are finishing a trio — you’re creating the third part of what two previous musicians began. Please keep this in mind.

Step 2: The plan is for you to record an original piece of music, on any instrumentation of your choice, as a complement to a pre-existing track. First, however, you must select the piece of music to which you will be adding your own music. There are tracks by numerous musicians to choose from. The majority are in this playlist:

Step 3: Record a piece of music, roughly the length of the piece of music you selected in Step 2. Your track should complement the piece from Step 2, and it should be placed dead center between the left and right stereo channels. When composing and recording your part, do not alter the original piece of music at all. To be clear: the track you upload won’t be your piece of music alone; it will be a combination of the track from Step 2 and yours.

Step 4: Also be sure, when done, to make the finished track downloadable, because it may be used by someone else in a subsequent Junto project.

Step 5: As with last week, you can contribute more than one track this week. You can do up to two total. If you choose to do a second, you should preferably try to use a duet track that no one else has used yet. The goal is for many as people as possible to benefit from the experience of being part of an asynchronous collaboration. After a lot of detailed instruction, that is the spirit of this project.

Eight Important Steps When Your Track Is Done:

Step 1: Include “disquiet0527” (no spaces or quotation marks) in the name of your tracks.

Step 2: If your audio-hosting platform allows for tags, be sure to also include the project tag “disquiet0527” (no spaces or quotation marks). If you’re posting on SoundCloud in particular, this is essential to subsequent location of tracks for the creation of a project playlist.

Step 3: Upload your tracks. It is helpful but not essential that you use SoundCloud to host your tracks.

Step 4: Post your track in the following discussion thread at llllllll.co:

Step 5: Annotate your track with a brief explanation of your approach and process.

Step 6: If posting on social media, please consider using the hashtag #DisquietJunto so fellow participants are more likely to locate your communication.

Step 7: Then listen to and comment on tracks uploaded by your fellow Disquiet Junto participants.

I started by listening to last weeks tunes whilst driving to the local store, I started singing along with Birds Sing In The Trees, by the time I got behind a microphone later that night, the exact words had disappeared, yet the bones of the melody could be recalled, I did 5 layers of vocals, 1st take for each, during the recording I was thinking of an image seen that day of men hunting grouse with big guns and how birds are not safe in this human world. A little bit of editing and some mixing mainly with various console channel emulations with a bit of extra saturation, then finding the best balance with the bed track.

I Will Sing For You In Fear - Fake Genius/Isonomia/Benn DeMole [disquiet0527]

Adding to @half-unusual  duet with @insomnia (https://soundcloud.com/half-unusual/half-intreccio-disquiet0526-collaboration-with-isonomia?si=9a7c8d68aa384934a239865dd6353ff8&utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing). Here I added a Spitfire Audio LABS London Atmos (2 on the Plaform) track and a bass track with a patch on the  KarmaFX software modular. These were sidechained with the original recording and passed through a couple of wave folders to give them grit.

braided over 3 ft Insomnia & halF unusuaL (disquiet0527)

I took a one-second sine tone, made it a stereo track, extended it it to 65 seconds using both stretching (which causes the fluttering) and tempo adjustment (which causes the breakup at the ends).

Then duplicated it a tone lower with about a 20 second overlap.

Probably could have been much shorter…

[disquiet0532] Dread

I took the almost ubiquitous Canon in D by Pachelbel, divided it every second bar and reversed the notes. Then replaced the three violin parts with Spitfire Audio's LABS Ondes Musicales. This was given some room reverb and Eventide Blackhole before being passed, appropriately, through AudioThing's Gong Amp collaboration with Hainbach.

As an aside, we used the 1968 Orchestre de Chambre Jean-François Paillard recording as part of our wedding ceremony.

Recorded to mark both the passing of Edgar Froese in January 2015 and to allow the DX7 programming of Gary 7 a new space to be heard.

All sounds originate from the Yamaha DX7, with processing through an Electro-Harmonix Super Ego + Memory Boy combination, plus a BugDelay and Behringer BSY600.
