With a penchant for off-kilter drum and bass, bass, dub and dubstep, sina meticulously curates sets that mix and match elements of atmospheric trip hop, murky post-DnB and the mischievous 2-step sounds of the 90/00s. Witnessing sina grace the decks at Inward Goods festival was a nostalgic luxury - I felt like I’d stepped into some form of magical Y2k swamp party, where only the best of early 2000s drum and bass were being thrown down. Sina’s contributions to the community extend beyond the decks and into the realm of party planning and label curation (Secret World) whilst also forming ⅓ of the band dregs. For the first time in more than a decade, Paul St. Hilaire (AKA Tikiman) presents a solo album – 100% Tiki. 

Over his 30-plus year career, St. Hilaire has become one of dance music’s quietly legendary figures. Born and raised in the Caribbean island Dominica, he moved to Berlin in 1994 and has lent both his voice and his musicianship to some of the most iconic electronic music from the German capital – and beyond. Renowned for his collaborations with Moritz von Oswald and Mark Ernestus (AKA Rhythm & Sound), he has also appeared on records with Deadbeat, Rhauder, Larry Heard aka Mr. Fingers and Stereotyp (G-Stone Recordings), amongst others. 

However, few know the extent of St. Hilaire’s compositional and technical mastery. From his home studio in Kreuzberg, which includes an extensive collection of vintage hardware, self-built instruments and notebooks scribbled with endless lyrics, he has created a vast archive of material spanning ambient dub, avant-jazz, lush techno and lovers rock. 

Tikiman Vol. 1 is a heady, downtempo tour de force of patois metaphors on education, displacement and personal vs. global histories, as is evident on slippy album opener “Bedroom in My Bag”: Mister, mister / Where are you going? / I’m heading for a faraway land / What are you having in the bag in your hand? / Help us to understand / He said, I’ve got my bedroom in my bag. 

Overall, the album’s lyrics reflect on life between Berlin and Dominica, specifically St. Hilaire’s hometown of Grand Bay, where he has worked with various musicians famous for the island’s different genres of carnival music. St. Hilaire himself always favoured the island’s more “discrete” music, developing a sonic synergy between two different geographical strains of groove and minimalism, and combining them with foundational Caribbean mixing techniques, which provide the basis for his songwriting and distinct baritone. 

Tikiman Vol.1 offers a rare insight into St. Hilaire’s complex artistry, from the eyes-down grooves of “Little Way” and the guitar-heavy digi dancehall experiment “Keep Safe,” to the subtle hypnosis of “Ten to One” and the softly crashing synth waves of closer “Three and a Half”, evoking not only beaches but also coasts and borders. It’s a fitting expression of both the breadth of St. Hilaire’s work, as well as his history as one of the few black, Berlin-based artists who, despite remaining largely overlooked, has influenced the city’s electronic music culture since its beginnings.

Kynant Records was founded in 2015 by Richard Akingbehin, a British-Nigerian radio programmer (Refuge Worldwide), music writer and DJ. Originally specialising in deep techno and featuring artists such as Cio D’Or, Terrence Dixon and Donato Dozzy, Kynant has since launched a sub-label Kynant EX which focuses on ambient, dub and experimental electronics.

"I wanted to make a mix that could be listened to at home, but that at the same time reflects part of what my DJing is today. That's why I decided to record it with an Allen & Heath Xone:92 mixer and three CDJs and inject my approach and technique, I guess. I thought about the tracklist for almost two months, trying to make it a document that can be listened today, but hopefully also revisited as time goes by."

Her music is full of experimentation—constantly evolving, sometimes moving towards more playful, percussive, sensual rhythms. Keep an eye out, each set is fresh and full of surprises.

Vortex Traks Podcast 01 - Naks

The 394th epsisode of @DarkScienceElectro is an artist highlight on English-born, Dublin-based artist @Cignol

He grew up during the 80's when Hip-Hop and Electrofunk made it's way to other side of the Atlantic and subsequently blew up. @Cignol was immediately captivated and that exposure changed the course of his life. He dove into Electronic music culture in the 90's, learned how to DJ in his bedroom and started playing out on the free party scene in the UK, which was booming at the time". Venturing into music production followed shortly thereafter, purchasing his first machines in 1995 (Juno 60 and a TR-606). After years of stumbling around with the machines he moved to Holland, bought a computer and learned how to sequence within digital audio workstations. At first, he was producing IDM/Ambient music with Acid tinges and melodic focus, however, after getting tired of producing music within a computer, he purchased some machines and started writing Electro. He told me that "The workflow of using hardware is far better for creativity in my opinion,  I love just switching the machines on and seeing what happens."

@Cignol has been active in releasing music for 10 years with his first release on Alphabet Set. He then moved on to other great labels like @computercontrolledrecords, @lunardiskorecords, @analogicalforce, @furthur_elect0nix, AC Records and most recently on the @alekstark label Fundamental Records.

Polish born,Brooklyn based Amourette is an eclectic DJ, pursing emotion over a limited sound. She’s interested in spaced out electro, synth-wave, off kilter techno, psychedelic distortions, deep baselines and indelible melodies. Amourette is the co-curator of REMEDY and Weird Science events, focused on showcasing raw, groundbreaking talent who no one else will bring, playing the records that no one else dares play. She’s a regular on Brooklyn’s favorite internet radio station, The Lot Radio.  In May of 2018, Amourette was featured on Red Bull Radio’s Choice Mix series, and has to date shared the decks with esteemed DJs such as Object, Ellen Allien, Scuba, Claude Young, Patrick Russell,Alessandro Adriani, DJ Hell, and many others.
