Exclusive: Jimi Jules 'Too Young For Me (Ripperton's Neptunians Marathon Mix)'

Swiss label Drumpoet Community celebrates its 15th anniversary with various releases from artists who have played a significant role in the label’s history and beyond. After first festivity outings from Lauer, All Is Well, Manuel Tur, Roman Flügel or Kalabrese, the time for a retreatment of Jimi Jules’ track Too Young For Me (feat. Jaw), which was originally released on Jimi’s Equinox album on Zukunft in 2016, from long-term friend and considerable artist Ripa alias Ripperton. With releases on ESP Institute, Maeve, Compost or on his very own label Tamed, just to name a few, Ripa’s made a name for himself that goes beyond the so called underground but despite his (international) success has managed to stay true to himself as well as his musical roots and implemented a sound of his own throughout the years of his career. A raw and stripped back bass line sets the foundation of Ripa’s remix approach for Too Young For Me, which is added the original vocals and a simple yet subtle array of chords creating some warmth, and almost funky harmony in the overall pretty techno-ish coming in track. Less is more in this case and Ripperton masters this approach in the best way possible to create a remix that truly deserves to bear the name.

Freie Sicht feat. Acud stands out with a catchy picked bass guitar, accompanied by a deep menacing pad. A punchy snare, that shakes the listener to the core, pushes the track into a disco/new wave style. This feeling intensifies as Lasse Winkler’s, aka Acud, lyrics start in the first break. The Berlin-based electronic musician, vocalist and label head of ’Keller’ is known for his musical aliases Acud, Beatmörtelz and Lasse Winkler. He is wailing, ‚Do you see me, don’t you see me, I see you, I don’t see you‘ throughout the track. On the face of it, a text of minimalistic simplicity, even naivety, but if you look at it more closely, they are words that are hard to grasp in their ambiguity and difficult to interpret. The well-known phrases become unfamiliar as he continually shifts the meaning by switching intonations. On the musical side the ease of a simple arpeggiator sequence is connected to sophisticatedly reverberated palm-mute guitar picks that form a vivid articulation of modern new wave.

Tal Fussman’s interpretation of Freie Sicht is a hypnotic break beat banger based on Acud’s vocal and an arpeggiator line while the evolving arrangement peaks in an ecstatic climax. 

Shubostar delivers a remix with mighty drums and a powerful bassline while integrating vocals, pad sounds and guitars from the original into her signature sound. Both remixes come with dancefloor aspirations without losing the obscure vibe of the original and rounding up the third single EP ahead of Oberst & Buchner’s album as a whole.

For Exploited Club, Alex Medina rolls out 'Ayy Paapi'; a truly singular soundclash that bumps like House and glistens like an Italo whilst also exuding the moxie of Reggaeton. 

Being Spanish born, Medina sought to incorporate his mother tongue into his music. He was motivated by 'the excitement of flirting with some Reggaeton vibes and bringing them to the next level of modern electronic music'. 

Speaking about the specific inspiration behind the vocals, he says 'Ayy Paapi was born on a family holiday with my little daughter Gala calling me papi, papi papi all the time..so I decided to use Spanish Reggaeton vocals to represent my mood as a father‘.

The title track kicks things off; melodies sway through bitter-sweet cycles while a reverberated signal roars out with a gripping power. Sequences, fx and the vocal refrain continue to build an esoteric braid that's guaranteed to linger in the mind long after the parties over. 

'Rompe Disco' follows up with a playful, percussive Breaks / Electro tool. Saw blades slice through a deep-set bass line while more Spanish vocals flower. A striking breakdown lances in and shatters the track with head bending results before accurate breaks lock back in and carry synth-lines and robotic vocals to the end. 

'Espacio Amor' dials in a big room vibe as more mournful chords glide over a straight 4/4 groove. LFOs have synths flashing in expressive strokes before a series of breakdowns form launch pads for bold, arresting drops that are certain send ripples across the floor.
