ZamZam 52 is a fully outernational collaboration between Bukkha (Spain/US), Madplate Sound (Italy) and Junior Dread (Brazil).  We love these kinds of link-ups, as the simple act of creating tunes across borders and continents for an international community of listeners and dancers is an act of resistance in a time of increasing nationalism and restrictions on peoples’ movement. 

"Nada A Perder” ("Nothing To Lose") leads off with hard skanks and a deceptively wistful melody.  Enter the honeyed-yet-gritty voice of rootsman Junior Dread over mashing steppers drums and a monstrous bassline designed with nothing but sound system pressure in mind.  Junior Dread’s powerful vocal, sung beautifully in his native Portuguese, delivers a message centered on unifying across difference: “When Bukkha came with the instrumental,” he says, "it made me think about overcoming our generation’s biggest obstacles if we unite.”  His inspiration in music comes from “life itself and Jah the Creator,” and as a believer in “Word Sound Power,” Junior Dread focuses exclusively on positive, empowering lyrics.  

The dub version travels deep through swirling vapor trails, carving out space by stripping back the vocal, echoing the skanks hard, opening up the reverbs, firing off the lasers, and valving-up the bassline for an even more militant side.  

Bukkha’s profile continues to rise with recent releases on labels including Dub Stuy, and Moonshine, with more dropping soon.  Sparring partner Madplate Sound has also released on Moonshine and Dub Stuy, and Junior Dread is well-known for tunes on the above labels, and the seminal “Rise” on Gorgon Sound’s Peng Sound debut.

A cover of Aswad’s powerful “African Children” track, this updated version is as politically relevant today as it was when originally released 34 years ago. In light of the Grenfell Tower tragedy we thought the track was appropriate in highlighting poverty, housing conditions and inequality, plus the importance of making your voice heard in a society that so often sweeps aside the voices of the many in favour of the few (Spikey Tee’s end coda of “Chant down babylon and help turn the page”). 

All proceeds of the single /EP release will raise money for those affected by the Grenfell Tower Fire that occurred in London in June 2017. 

“Babylon Children” featuring Spikey Tee has been lifted from Jstar’s “Stand To Order” album with some heavyweight remixes behind it from Numa Crew (IT), Dubmatix (CA) and Adam Prescott (UK).

Upfull Melody is the first single from a forthcoming LP by a collective of musicians called Guiding Star Orchestra based in Copenhagen, Denmark. The track and the album was recorded in the summer of 2016 completely without the use of digital technology. The mix was then done from multitrack 2 inch tape to ¼ tape, and the mastering from ¼ tape to ½ tape. When you record without the possibility of post-editing and cutting, you have to focus on the most important thing – which is the vibe. This has been the philosophy of the recording sessions. Upfull Melody is offered in respect of the strong roots and culture scene, and it is our wish that it can also be used for Soundsystem dances that focuses on a strong positive meditation.

Here is a guestmix I did last month for Drum&Bass arena . Something a little different from me, showing a side of my musical history that I feel has been very influential ! Most of these tracks are from around the mid 90s  , a very cool time when hardcore/breakbeat/rave had not quite matured into drum&bass and was still going by the name of Jungle ( or jungle techno !! ) Labels like Moving Shadow, Good Looking and Reinforced were on top of their game . An amazing period in the development of electronic dance music , please listen and enjoy ;)
