Beastie Boys fue un grupo musical neoyorquino fundado en 1981. Comenzaron tocando Country, luego se pasaron al hardcore punk en sus primeras grabaciones, pero más tarde comenzaron a experimentar como pioneros del hip hop y el rap, convirtiéndose en referencia fundamental de los mismos. También han editado discos basados en el funk y el jazz y no es infrecuente que en sus discos de hip hop incluyan algún momento de rock o punk o algún corte acústico. También son conocidas las actividades de turntablism y de producción musical de sus miembros. Según Mike D., Beastie quiere decir: Boys Entering Anarchistic States Towards Internal Excellence.

El grupo fue fundado por Michael Diamond (Mike D), Adam Horovitz (Ad-Rock) y Adam Yauch (MCA) †. Aunque otros músicos han formado parte del grupo como Kate Schellenbach (batería) y John Berry (guitarrista), que estuvieron en la formación antes al grabar su primer disco, el hardcore punk "Pollywog Stew" en el sello independiente punk Ratcag Records en 1981. En 1983, demuestran sus primeros coqueteos con el Hip Hop, en su EP "Cooky Puss". Uno de los temas de ese disco, el semi dub "Beastie Revolution", significó un golpe de suerte inesperado al ganar una demanda de $40.000 a la British Airways por usar la canción sin permiso para un anuncio.

Huzzah!  Interbay is back with another track...that's 491 consecutive days dropping a never-before-heard track here on SoundCloud.  

In these descriptions, I often talk about having the best intentions of pursuing a particular inspiration but not quite hitting that target...and ending up, always, sounding like Interbay.  

This is another one of those times.  Still, I'm rather hoping you'll think it is great!  (...or, even The Great!)  

It all started when I was adding a secondary drum layer on a DIFFERENT track (because that's what we do at Phantom Laboratories West, we experiment over and over again until something ends up being whatever it is going to be) when I saw that there was a drumkit preset named "Voltaire."  

And I immediately made a wish AND IT CAME TRUE!  The drumkit DID intend to sound like the excellent synth-based post punk band Cabaret Voltaire--and I am a big fan of Cabaret Voltaire!  

I had written songs that I thought could be done by either Cremation Dance or DangerScience (post-punk bands that I fronted in the 80s and early 90s)...if only we had a proper synth player (in Cremation Dance, I tried to sing and play keyboards at the same time...and, frankly, I can only remember a couple of songs where that actually worked...and, for DangerScience, though we released an album that had lots of synths all over it, when we filled out the band to do live shows, we ended up being a guitar/bass/drums/singer combo...missing the synths and samplers sound that our album featured.) that were STRONGLY influenced by Cabaret Voltaire.  

I had thought about trying to aim for a CabVoltaire sound since beginning this Interbay project, but the target felt elusive, for whatever reason.  Like Interbay, many Cabaret Voltaire songs include spoken word samples, from various sources--but, especially after their early years, they would feature distinct vocals more frequently...and, as I've said, I'm not quite ready to commit my own vocals to Interbay tracks just yet.  Someday?  Absolutely!  Now?  Evidently not.  

...but the drumkit DID incorporate sounds that, at least to me, seemed to fit perfectly...so, I saved and closed out the other project and started a new one, in order to chase down an Interbay track that would show clear influence from Cabaret Voltaire.  

And, as anyone could have predicted, the influence is not necessarily obvious for anyone who hasn't read this far in the description to know what it is--it ends up soundiing...like Interbay.

But, I still dig the track...and there are certain things about this track that make it separate and distinct from other Interbay synthpop/post-punk tracks, things that I think are reflective of my love for Cabaret Voltaire.  

...if I try this again, I'll definitely want to sing on it myself...(but how could I say no to Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult?)

The Fat of the Land is the third studio album by The Prodigy. The album was released by XL Recordings on 30 June 1997 and on 1 July 1997 in the United States by Maverick Records. The album title comes from the old English phrase 'living off the fat of the land', which means living well or being wealthy.

Samples:

The main vocal sample from "Smack My Bitch Up" is taken from "Give the Drummer Some" by American hip hop group Ultramagnetic MCs. Thus, The Prodigy invited group member Kool Keith, who raps the portion sampled by the Prodigy in the original track, to do the lyrics and vocals for another track, "Diesel Power". The track also features a looped sample of the bassline and drums from the beginning of "In Memory Of" by jazz musician Randy Weston and a sped-up riff from "Funky Man" by American funk group Kool and the Gang; both of these samples remain uncredited on the album.
"Breathe" samples sound effects from American hip hop group the Wu-Tang Clan's music video for their single "Da Mystery of Chessboxin'".
Three credited samples are present on "Funky Shit": the main vocal sample which gives the song its title is sampled from "Root Down" by American hip hop group the Beastie Boys, the horn riff that appears throughout the song is sampled from "Theme from "S.W.A.T."" by American disco-funk group Rhythm Heritage, and the "Break!" vocal is sampled from "2, 3, Break" by American hip hop duo the B-Boys.
"Serial Thrilla" features a sample of a riff from "Selling Jesus" by English rock band Skunk Anansie.
The main riff on "Mindfields" is sampled from English composer John Barry's "Hip's Trip", from the 1974 film The Man with the Golden Gun.
"Climbatize" samples a horn riff from "The Horn Track" by Egyptian Empire, the stage name of electronic musician Tim Taylor. The main drum loop was sampled from "Air Drums from Outer Bongolia" by English electronic duo The Jedi Knights; Liam Howlett sampled the drums without the group's permission, and The Jedi Knights threatened to sue The Prodigy. However, Howlett already knew that The Jedi Knights themselves had sampled the drums from an older track entitled "Bongolia" by American funk group Incredible Bongo Band without permission; XL Recordings, the Prodigy's record label, bought the rights to the Incredible Bongo Band track and threatened to sue The Jedi Knights. The media coverage cornered around the event attracted film producer George Lucas, who sued The Jedi Knights for taking their stage name from the Star Wars term "Jedi Knight", which Lucas created.
"Firestarter" samples a guitar riff from "SOS" by American rock group The Breeders, and the "Hey!" vocal from "Close (To the Edit)" by English dance group Art of Noise (the vocal was also previously used by the band in "Full Throttle" on Music for the Jilted Generation). The drums on the song are sampled from a track on the Time + Space Recordings drum recording album Jungle Warfare, Vol. 1; another Time + Space Recordings album track was sampled on The Prodigy's previous single, "One Love".
"Fuel My Fire" features guitar sounds and feedback effects by Gizz Butt taken from an unreleased remix by Kris Needs of an earlier version of the same song. Recorded shortly after the Autumn UK tour of 1996.
