Aboutface is firstly a composer/live performer and secondly a DJ, hailing from East London he steps up for the next release on Amirali’s newly founded imprint ‘Dark Matters’. 

Drawing upon both the sociological and environmental landscape as creative inspiration, Aboutface uses his background in fine art and painting to help inform his productions. All the last three years music has been inspired by a thousand mile plus journey through Eastern Europe and around the coastal regions of the UK; each song using the environmental recordings of a different region or city as the creative starting point. 

He says "I like to combine field recording, acoustic and analogue sounds to articulate small stories in each song. My creative influences range from Pierre Schaeffer, Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Claude Debussy, through to James Holden, Four Tet and Boards of Canada.”

The complexity and broad fields of influence are evident in ‘The Hazy Path To Misunderstanding’. The EP is made up of three tracks, ‘The Hazy Path To Misunderstanding’ is a meandering and laid back percussive track whilst ‘My Benevolent Shackle’ exudes a darker intensity. Lastly Tin Man steps up for a remix of ‘The Hazy Path To Misunderstanding’ adding more frenetic energy to the track and upping the pace. 

Aboutface’s compositions are intelligent, and with a debut album planned for next year slotting into the eclectic Dark Matters' growing roster, the future looks bright.

Der junge Mann, den wir euch heute präsentieren, kommt aus Gießen und hört auf den zauberhaften Namen “Simon Ey”. Neben seiner Tätigkeit als DJ und Produzent leitet er noch ein Online Radio, welches ihr auf http://www.rockdenshit.de/ findet. Als Veranstalter und Künstler ist er seit 11 Jahren Teil der “RDS-Crew”, die Partys im Großraum Frankfurt organisieren. Seit 2013 ist er sowohl Resident in der “Technodisco” in Wetzlar, als auch Mitglied der “Familia Autonomica”, die für Raves in und um München bekannt sind. 
Nachdem Simon schon seit Anfang 2000 als DJ tätig ist, hat er eine Reihe von Entwicklungen in der Clubmusik mitgemacht, die sich in seinen Produktionen und Sets wiederspiegeln. Seine musikalische Laufbahn begann mit einer klassischen Ausbildung am Klavier, die Liebe zu dem Instrument scheint noch zu bestehen, wie man an dem Intro des Podcasts für uns hören kann. Simons Sets, in denen er gekonnt eine schöne Spannungskurve zeichnet, sind gefüllt mit verschiedenen elektronischen und manchmal auch nicht elektronischen Musikstücken. Wir freuen uns diesen Künstler entdeckt zu haben und ihn auch gleich am 28.03.2015 auf unserem “Das haett es frueher nicht gegeben”-Floor im Pathos München begrüßen zu dürfen.

If you have ever heard Nils Frahm’s “Says,” (and if you haven’t, I recommend immediately listening), you probably share the same sentiment as me, in that successfully executing a remix of such an incredible and intricate work of musical genius without destroying it would be an extremely difficult, if not impossible, feat to accomplish. Some unknown remixer (update: it’s The Three Hands Collective) has managed to pull it off, more than doing justice to the original by maintaining the highlight on Nils Frahm’s gorgeous, complex and tension-building melodies, but drawing it into the realm of danceability with the addition of subtle embellishing sounds that do not overwhelm or detract from the beauty of the original, and selective periods of percussion, including dropping the beat back in at the precisely the goosebump-inducing zenith of the melody. It’s a very slow-building and anticipatory auditory journey requiring extreme patience, but the payoff is huge and well-worth it, justified by the wave of chills sent down my spine by the absolute melancholic bliss. You can hear it in Italian duo Mind Against‘s recent phenomenal dark and rather minimal set recorded at Goethebunker in Essen, Germany on Soundcloud at the 1:10:00 mark.

2012 was a great year for underground dance music and I really enjoyed playing many of the tracks in this best of 2012 podcast at mad parties all over the world. That was my remit really for this year – I wanted to include tracks which have intense personal memories for me. I can clearly remember some of the totally off the hook DJ experiences of last year when I look at the tracklisting for the show. Opening with Bed Stuy Beat at 10am on a sunny July Sunday in Berlin midway through techno legend Woodys legendary 40th Geburtstag. Watching the dancefloor detonate to Burrowing by VVV at Mad Racket in Sydney in September. Testing people with Benga Benga all over the place and it NEVER failing.. I played it between heavy techno tracks at 8am in places and everyone still got it. Tender Leaves destroying Pratersauna in Vienna at 6am…

As ever a massive thanks to all the amazing producers who contributed their time and talent to 2012. Without their dedication there would be nothing decent to dance to, so please join me and salute them.
